LadyGriz Lady Griz 5-out offense

The Kennedy Gillette article on gogriz.com mentioned that the Lady Griz will go to a 5-out offense next year. By checking Chatgpt, I see that means that none of the 5 players will be inside the key to start a play. I assume that is why we didn't recruit a post player - presumably Avery Waddington and Alex Pirog (both 6'3") will be at the high post.

That means that we will have only 2 players able to defend the post. If either gets hurt, we may be in trouble. Am I missing something?

I really hoped to see a player like Dani recruited. A forward than is mobil and agile and can rebound. Didn't happen.

At his introductory press conference, Coach Harris talked about the 5-out offense. He said, "I was a math major---3 is better than 2".

You don't always need traditional post players to defend the post. Guards who are active and physical can also do a good job of defending the post.

With how basketball is evolving and with fewer players being coached/trained to play the traditional post/center position, the ability to recruit a talented true post player is decreasing. Plus, playing 5-out spreads the floor, creates driving and passing lanes, and makes the defense have to defend more of the court. You can also have all of your players rotate through a post position on the floor and you can take advantage inside of height mismatches at all positions, including guard, and most guards are not coached to defend the post position.

Players like Chloe Larsen and Jocelyn Land were considered PF at various times in their high school careers. Granted, Larsen is but 5'10" and Land is 6'0" but that doesn't mean there have been players with the same height disparity playing those positions in the past: Ann Lake was but 6'0,' and she handled the '4' pretty well, or so I thought at the time. Juliann Keller was but 5'10," when she was slated for that position in the latter part of her career.
With enough depth, with a full court press, rotating a number of equivalent players at the same positions, could very well wear the opponents down to making transition baskets for the Griz a lot easier. Be interesting. Might Remind me of UCLA with coach Wooden, full court pressure all the time!!!

If Ava Cossette is OHSA approved, I think she'd be a welcome addition to the LG.

"Ava Cossette displayed an impressive feel for the game. Her handles are elite and she is a sniper from deep!"

With Maggie Hutka also a possibility at the PF ("4") position; one thing that impresses me about her style of play is her quickness (hopefully it transitions well to the Division 1 level):

I think Maggie Hutka will do amazing things for the Lady Griz. With all of the returning players and all of the new players and with Nate Harris having a full summer with the women, this is going to be a fun year to watch the LG.

Thanks for the description, that is always good for our 3's too. This will be good for Waddington, our versatile power guard, she can take full advantage for a mismatch opportunity, and for other players as Waddy draws her defender out to top of the court.

I think the 5 out style is being adopted quickly by a lot of teams. You see it all the time now in the WNBA. Emphasis is now on playing fast, transistion style bball. Big 5 post players are becoming less and less important unless they can run the floor and shoot the 3.

Yeah, she reminds me somewhat in her playing style and general basketball savvy of another 6'0" point-forward, at least, at the level she was playing. Maybe not the same level of ball handling (dribbling) skills , but, overall, somewhat similar. Hope her talents translate well to another level with her upcoming team:

Maybe it's the hair.

The LG have a number of players that are going to be hard to keep off the court.

Anyone have any updates on LG scrimmages? Have heard they played Utah Valley and possibly Central Washington. Haven't been able to get more than that.
