Cats regular season predictions

This is really cute. The last few years the narrative was how Tommy was a rb playing qb and that he just wasn't that good. Now that he's gone the question becomes how the bobcats will suck without him.
That wasn’t the narrative of most knowledgeable Griz fans. You obviously don’t pay attention. You are the one with the narrative. Feel free to find any post where I said Mellott was a rb playing qb, or even a rb. Reporting from Istanbul, Turkey. Not one person over here thinks the Cats will have a good season. Waiting at airport to fly back to Istanbul. Too bad I don’t know how to load photos? Elrod?

I always said he was a RB playing QB. Clearing I was wrong though. He was a WR playing QB this whole time.

Regardless of what you all think of Cody Hawkins, let's all be completely real for a minute. ISU does not have the personnel to go toe to toe with the cats, especially in Bozeman. Has he elevated the program? Absolutely he has, but that does not mean he has the dogs on his team to take down the cats in Bozeman. And since many of you are predicting ISU to win in Bozeman, that must mean you think ISU is gonna beat the Griz in Poky then right? ISU has a zero percent chance of beating the cats in Bozeman, let alone keeping it within 2 scores. Bank it.
100% agree.

Just send them my way and I'll get 'em up! Fly safe man.

I'm not mad about anything. I think it's funny how the narrative changes. I guess we'll see if the huge amount of starters returning will just be a bunch of schmucks without Tommy. I'm on the record here predicting they will probably lose two to three games this year. I also think that will be enough to win the BSC.
I cannot imagine the bobcats will abandon the +1 run game. Coach Vigan seems to like it, their QBs seem to be good at it and their lineman are schemed up for it. But you may be right.
1) Tommy Mellott's best and most natural position was clearly RB or WR.

2) Tommy is an incredibly talented, intelligent athlete, and he was worth wins by being on the field.

3) He was an incredibly fast athlete in a system that covered for his weaknesses and accentuated his strengths, allowing him to be a nearly irreplaceable player in their system.

You have to realize that these three statements are not contradictory or a change in narrative, right? Most Griz fans I know praised the hell out of the kid and would have loved to have him in maroon. He still wasn't a natural QB at all.

100% agree. He was an athlete playing QB. He improved significantly in the latter as he matured, but not a "pure" QB. I'd actually also say that Lamar Jackson is in the similar mold. Lamar has improved as well, but has been inconsistent generally. Anyway, everyone knew the way to stop bozo state was to stop the running of TM. Do that, and you increase your chances of winning. Him playing QB gave them the best chance of winning games, much like when Troy played there. Amazing athlete playing the position to give the team the best chance of winning. If you are from MT, you have to love Tommy. Hard working, tough kid, from where everyone??? Doesn't get much more Montana if you ask me.

I'd argue that his best position was where he could use his football literacy and that was at QB...his ability to read defenses and take advantage using his talents and that of others is what made him stand out in addition to his ability to run the ball...

I can only speak for myself, I thought Mellot's speed and running ability was a matchup nightmare and allowed for one on one matchups that his receivers usually won. Pure passer no , freak athlete yes.

I absolutely see the point there and the logic in that. I understand why they put him back there, and they clearly had a lot of success with that. There were also limitations that were created for the offense with him back there, especially prior to 2024.

I would also contend that if they had a true "good QB" and you put Tommy at WR, he's Kupp and nobody is covering him. I will argue QB is not his best position but certainly the one that gave them the best chance to win. Could you imagine using his ability to read defenses as a WR? I can see your point though, for sure.

I got called a retard on X for pointing those things out to an ignorant 'Scat fan. Now, I may very well BE a retard, but those things are most definitely true.

Re: the Tommy argument.

NDSU kept losing what was thought to be generational QBs and then had another in the hopper. MSU's been building their program in similar fashion and will rely upon top notch defense and a diverse running game once again (much like NDSU does). They can afford to have a QB grow into the role I'd bet and the dropoff probably won't be that noticeable... assuming team health stays intact generally.

I disagree with Elrod's point #1. At least in the Bobcat system at the FCS level, QB was Tommy's natural position. He ended his career with a 161 passer rating with 55 TDs and 8 INTs for 6000+ yards. No question he was a QB all the way. Totally different question and answer related to why the Raiders want him at WR that has nothing to do with his college career. Both are independently true at the same time.

NDSU has been developing and producing top-talent QBs that have made it in the NFL for nearly 2 decades now.

Bozeman has no history of developing top-talent QBs, and a guy who was an amazing freak athlete, but who couldn't even sniff a practice squad as a passer in the NFL isn't suddenly going to change that, IMO.
