Utah Safety Jeilani Davis Commits

Unless I'm wrong, Tim Hauck, Dave Dickenson, Tim Bush, and Zach Wagenmann were walkons. Do people consider them HS recruits?
Dave Dickenson was not a walkon. < https://egriz.com/threads/1991-recruiting-class.88724/

I remember back to before the 1991 season that the Missoulian reported that Dickenson, out of CMR, recruited and signed by the Griz. My impression at the time was that I guess the Griz needed someone to hold the ball for the PATs and FG attempts.

I beg to differ - https://www.montanasports.com/high-...y-montanans-in-college-football-hall-of-fame/

"Dickenson chose to walk on at the University of Montana, redshirting his first season in Missoula."

There have been so many changes so fast in the rules of college football recruiting and remuneration, ie NIL, that it's hard to determine exactly what the future is going to hold. For years NDSU had advantages that many other universities did not have in the form of full cost of attendance. Some of that is being equalized in the form of NIL, but not completely because as other schools are able to offer NIL to their best players, schools like NDSU can do the same, concurrently raising the stakes until there is an arms race of sorts happening amongst the top players and universities. It's easy to look at the situation and make a blanket statement such as, "Montana needs to focus on recruiting high school players like NDSU does" however it's a simplistic statement and does not take into account numerous variables that the casual observer might not even be able to articulate. Will NDSU continue their dominance in this new era of the portal and free-flowing money via NIL? Maybe, Maybe not. They have managed to remain the juggernaut that they have always been, and they may do it mostly through high school recruiting, but they still have advantages that UM does not have. And my own humble opinion is that the Griz coaches are doing everything they can to get the best talent available whether that be through high school recruiting or through the portal. I didn't like the portal or NIL at first, (still not sure I like them) but you have to play the hand you're dealt. And I think our coaches are doing that.
With you, Mom. Always been an old school leaning fan and hate a lot of the landscape changes in college sports and ultimately think it will prove detrimental to the sports. However, if I plan to continue following my favorite teams (Griz) I can't let my disdain for the new realities spoil what is still fun about following Griz athletics. So while I love the Marianis, Andersons and Wagenmanns and their local roots and success stories I accept that narrative has changed and will still try to get enjoyment in the new age. And realize my preferences are irrelevant.

Who has haste replace all D starters and all starting receivers?

Some teams bring in 30 transfers. Look at Colorado. 16 of 50 teams in this link did. I didn’t cull out coach change schools. https://247sports.com/season/2025-football/transferteamrankings/

Alabama posted 27 transfers yesterday, not 30. If they all showed up.

Do you ever do any research before you spout off?
Do you ever read your posts before you hit post? Those first few words were a little rough...even after the mulligan.

Stop being such an idiot. Read and research before you post. What kind of idiot makes a post like yours, and ends up totally goofing up what he said.

You are a huge jerk. You need to get your ass kicked.

I don’t disagree, and realize the portal is something good teams have to take advantage of, but…30 transfers in one off-season is a lot. Maybe I’m counting wrong, but that’s what I got from Payton’s list. Add in 17 HS players, and that’s almost 50 new players in one off-season. Basically half the roster. I think there were 25 seniors, 7 players transferred out…

I’m all for getting better talent, but it’s hard to say that this isn’t a sign of prior recruiting years not being up to standard. What other reason is there for replacing half the roster?
I'd say that your take is probably correct. Prep recruits have not developed in the way the staff wanted or thought they would at least at this point. But two years ago they would have grabbed a transfer or two and just rode with what they had. Now it seems like they have realized that prep recruits have not developed, at east to the point of being ready to play and have filled holes with the portal. This is what good teams do, even at the highest level. You don't build a team with the portal, but sometimes if your roster is not where it needs to be, and its a solution to fixing it much faster than you used to be able to. They are clearly embracing the portal now, which is great because not utilizing it to its full extent is playing with a hand tied behind your back.

I also think that when a terrific player becomes available in the Portal, you consider contacting him and seeing if he's interested. Even if there isn't a hole to fill or need. Of course, you need to be careful with that type of thing if you will unduly irritate existing very good players.

I've met or run across some of the new transfers. They all said they wanted to come to a top program that had a chance to go all the way. They had all heard about how loud and fun the stadium was, and are looking forward to that. Some had coaches and even a father had experienced Griz stadium, and praised it. They all liked the coaches so far, and during recruiting, including Bobby. Several said the first thing Bobby said to them when he met them, was that he wanted them to graduate. One guy told me that he likes how coaches other than the particular position coach sometimes offer advice and help. Almost all said they love the guys on the team so far; no one said anything negative. They want to work hard, get rolling, and get to the championship. One told me he was impressed how much Bobby knew about him and his game, how Bobby had some of his tape ready to go on a screen in his office, and how Bobby has been direct about what he liked and what needs improvement. A d-back said there is alot of speed at receiver, especially the younger guys. I think our young backer who got hurt in the spring, Otlewsi (?), is working out with the team this summer.

One of your better posts Hoops.
Whether they articulate it or not, my guess is that players and their families are impressed with the character of the players and coaches here. It seems obvious to me that that is one thing Hauck and his team look for when recruiting . If worries about a potential player's character means missing out occasionally on a recruit then that is OK with me.

I'd say this is the right idea. The goal isn't to have the best HS recruits in the country or the best portal class. The goal is to have the best possible player on the field at each position, however that had to happen.

As others have said, I assume this year and next will be outliers with FBS schools cutting more guys than ever before to keep at the roster cap of 105 players. That creates opportunity, and we had a season last year with results that were disappointing, creating a need. Need met opportunity, and the coaches weren't scared to pull the trigger. Now guys at every position will have to compete to see who is most ready to take up the mantle. "The pride and tradition of the Montana Grizzlies will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak." That includes competing for your starting spot every single year, whether we bring in a high schooler or a talented transfer.

I just don't see a downside to where our roster is at today. SDSU and MSU both took significant hits. That creates opportunity, too.

I thought for sure it was bad for Otlewski might be a goner for the year the way it looked during the Spring game so that is huge he’s already working out maybe signals he can be ready for camp hopefully.

I've decided to just make up stuff like other posters seem to do. Ha.

For someone recruited out of high school, there's alwasy been a chance of being supplanted by a transfer. It's just more amplified now. If you're at the end of year two and you're not improving up the depth chart, it shouldn't be surprising if to see someone transfer in.
The guys in the portal are the same age and in many cases have similar playing time, sometimes even less than the student athletes on the team.
It's about competition, the guy from Great Falls isn't getting bumped by the guy from Cedar Falls because of bias against Montana preps. Playing for Montana shouldn't be an entitlement of for in-state kids.

Do some research before you spout off about me spouting off about your posts.

The first post you commented on was not my post. It had gotten goofed up in another poster's post, which you posted and commented on. This is the first part of what you posted as the first line of my earlier post: "Who has has r". I had not included that as a sentence. Now, you are conveniently leaving out your mistake. And while I had a typo too, you made a huge mistake. Let's bet $100 that what I just said is correct. Put up or shut up. And you can't own up to your mistake, because you are a total loser. I owned up to my typo; you aren't owning up to your mistake.

Do you want some more? Bailey is down 20 pounds. Gillman is 212. The top 4 corners may be Loud, Ford, Lawler and Breston. Breston had an offer from New Mex St. I have a good feeling about Pifferini.
