MBBALL Grant Kepley Commits

I will say this is under the assumption that the rest of the roster is static at this moment. Kai Johnson was the only player with any real question. Sort of assume that Dick's status is the same and unless I hear anything different, you sort have to infer that it's Johnson's roster position.

There is always the possibility that certain agreements fell through or other players situations have changed. Signs point to Johnson, but this is the NCAA in 2025.
Unless something changes, this might mean that Kai Johnson's appeal through the court system is not likely to bear fruit.

Griz snag another Western Washington guy.

Kid was also the GNAC Freshmen of the Year. Looks like the cats were in pretty heavy on him. We must've came in pretty late on him cause we have no coaches following him on Twitter or anything. Should be a good player and contributor for us. IDK if he will start or not, but being he has 3 years of eligibility remaining, he could turn in to quite the weapon for us.

With the addition of Grant, who will probably be a real weapon coming off our bench next year, do we have any schollies left ? ( I was still hoping for us to bring in one more big man ( 6-10 to 7 footer ), but I realize it is also getting late plus we might be out of ammo--scholarships. )

By my math we are. Our roster is full unless we have a defection that we are currently unaware of but here is the status of the roster:

Roster: 15 (zero positions open)
  • GR: 2
    • Sawyer, Pridgen
  • SR: 1
    • Taylor
  • JR: 5
    • Jedkins, Williams, Betts; Isaak, Hicks
  • SO: 4
    • Henderson; Anderson Jr.; Kepley; Dick (WO)
  • FR: 3
    • Aguino; Moxon; Thompson

14 allocated scholarships: (2 are privately funded (Pridgen/Sawyer), 12 traditional).
  • Current Roster demands (6): Sawyer, Pridgen, Jedkins, Williams, Henderson, Thompson,
  • Used via HS signings (2): Aguino, Moxon
  • Used via JC signings (1): Isaak
  • Used via Portal (5): Betts, Anderson Jr., Taylor, Hicks, Kepley

I know Dick is considered a Walk-on, but he is the recipient of the Herb Jones Memorial Scholarship.

Thanks for pointing that out. I read that article and it completely flew over my head that he was a scholarship recipient.

I really don't think it matters anymore whether the scholarships are athletic or academic. Few years back when we had Brown here they parsed it out as him as a walk-on even though he was getting money from the academic side.

NCAA rules have changed enough that I really don't know how any of that stands now. However, it used to be that it didn't matter where the scholarship money originated, just that they were getting financial aid from the University and that counted as an athletic grant in aid. They made that rule because some schools were finding a lot of academic geniuses for their basketball and football team's walkons. NIL has changed the playing field quite a bit.

That's what the Pioneer Football League does. They're not allowed to offer athletic scholarships, so they just give most of their players academic scholarships. That's how they get around it.

The Pioneer Football League does not give out academic scholarships just because they are football players. They qualify for academic aid just as any normal student does. A kicker who never plays might get more academic aid then the starting QB... because it isn't based on football ability, it is based on academic qualifications. They are non-scholarship in the sense that there is no money for sport specific aid (in this case football), but they can still receive financial aid and academic scholarships that any student attending those schools can get.

There is a reason you don't see the Pioneer Football League teams advancing in the playoffs far. They are fortunate to get an auto-bid as a conference. Instead of playing DII schools, an FCS should always look to schedule Pioneer League teams as it is an FCS game that counts in the NCAA wins category. Genius play by MSU to pound the Toreros of San Diego this upcoming fall in Bozeman.

The University of San Diego while not giving out athletic scholarships for football, certainly gives them out for both Men's and Women's basketball, and they participate in the West Coast Conference for hoops. They just didn't want to get into the arms race in football and as an institution chose to join the Pioneer League for Football.

Grant will be a good addition to the squad. I had him in class, he will be a hard worker and great teammate. Grant has game also, has really improved his shot the last couple of years at WWU and brings athletisim, ball handling(if needed as an off guard) and supurb court sense as well. Loves the game and will do whatever is needed. The Griz got a gem in Keps!
