MBBALL Big Dance Tracker

I am currently watching the Auburn/Michigan game. I’m not pulling for the upset on this one, because I really don’t care for Michigan. Both of these teams are playing turnover basketball. Michigan is currently up 42 to 39, with 13 minutes to go in the second half.
 
Well, can't have everything: Florida won earlier to put one SEC team into the Final Four. However, late in the game, it looks like Duke will knock Alabama out.

Yeah, today didn't leave us (me and wife) with much rooting interest. Tomorrow, we can get behind Houston and Auburn. Family connection to Auburn: wife's dad and two cousins graduated from there. One cousin was even on BBall scholarship before he blew out a knee.

I’ve got family connections to Michigan State but that is it for the remaining teams. My grandpa, father, uncle and cousin all went to Michigan State. My uncle's nextdoor neighbor for the past 30 years which is basically my whole life played football at Michigan State in the eighties. I do not have any personal connection but can get behind Kelvin Sampson who started his career in Butte.

I'm with you on Sampson (and Houston). His interviews always impressed me, even before I knew of his Montana connections.
 
Duke is an execution machine.
Cooper Flagg is fun to watch.
I'd be surprised if Duke doesn't win it all.
Pulling for Houston though.

Somewhat connected, and didn’t want to start a new thread. The story begins with Texas, which many analysts (and me too) thought did not deserve a bid, much less a #11 seed. I won’t go into all the mostly bad numbers, but – for me – the key fact was their losing conference record: 6-12. That’s right, a team that won only a third of its conference games got a bid and a #11 seed.

Evidently, Texas officials (and fans) agreed … the coach was fired a few days after the Longhorns lost the play-in game. Not too bad, however, since he gets a $5.4 million buy-out. (What's $$$ to UT?) Here’s the irony: Texas lost to Xavier in that play-in game … then Texas immediately hired the Xavier coach (Sean Miller) to replace the one they fired.

That set off an interesting domino effect: Xavier quickly replaced Miller with Richard Pitino, the coach at New Mexico. The Lobos then hired the coach at UC San Diego, Eric Olen. Olen had led the Tritons move up from Division II all the way to a Big Dance appearance in their first year of eligibility at D-I

A couple hours ago, UC San Diego announced that they had elevated their Associate Head Coach, Clint Allard, to the Head position. A UCSD alum, Allard had served 11 years under Eric Olen. The ultimate irony would have been for them to hire the ex-Texas coach, but that wasn’t going to happen.
 
Auburn mostly kept a 10-12 point lead, but Michigan State got it down to 6 at the end.

Clever people setting the brackets ... with some luck thrown in. As it stands now, one SEC team will make it into the championship. However, because Florida and Auburn face off in the semifinals, it won't be an all-SEC final.
 
Tidbit: All number 1 seeds in brackets are in final four. Final four will be held in my neighborhood - San Antonio, TX. The last time all number 1s met in the final four was in 2008 in San Antonio.

Are you going to the game? I did get into the championship game last year, in Phoenix. I had to work at getting a ticket, but it was worth it.
When I’m in the San Antonio area, I always stay in New Braunfels. My only beef about the area is that rugged man brewery, has closed. However, I do enjoy the nightlife in Gruene.
I like going to the the River Walk, however that area will probably be packed the weekend of the game.

To nudge that tidbit: By 2008-2009, the field has expanded to 65 teams, with one play-in game. FYI: Mount St. Mary's beat Coppin State in the play-in, then got obliterated, 113-74, by North Carolina.

I live about 4 miles from Gruene just outside city limits of New Braunfels. There are some new some new nightlife places in New Braunfels since you where in Phoenix last year such as Cowboys & Cadillacs, Lost & Found Rooftop Bar and Musk & Fuss. NBTX is a fast growing city. Its nightlife can compete with San Antonio.
 
Another bit of history about that 2008 tournament that ended in San Antonio. That was the year Steph Curry led 10-seed Davidson all the way to the Elite Eight. Curry scored 128 points along the way. They then lost to the eventual champ, Kansas, by just 2 points.

FWIW, Portland State was the Big Sky representative that year … and they faced Kansas in the first round. (Needless to say, Ouch!)

There's an urban legend that Steph Curry took an official visit to Montana before committing to Davidson. His father, Dell Curry, had a connection with Larry Krystkowiak from their NBA days. Never have known if that was true. Imagine Steph Curry with Kevin Criswell and Andrew Strait :ROFLMAO:

Sounds awesome. I’m going to have to make it a priority to get back to New Braunfels.
