MBBALL The Lasting Metaphor

It's the second half, and Montana is hanging in this game against an extremely talented Wisconsin team, when Money Williams steals a pass and is off down the court, avoiding his one man to beat with a sensational acrobatic move to fly through the air and lay the ball up--off the front of the rim.

When casual observers look at the scores of yesterday's game, they'll see us as yet another of the lower seeds--S.I.U., Alabama State, Wofford, Omaha--that got annihilated by one of the top seeds.

But unlike other blowout losses in first round games, such as to UNLV many years ago or Syracuse in San Jose or Wisconsin last time we met them, I will remember this game the way a tongue plays over a sore tooth. One that could have been much tighter had it not been for all the shots we left at the rim.

The final score certainly did not reflect how well Montana played.

It wasn't just this one missed layup by Money. Sawyer clanged a makeable bank shot; Whitney left a couple at the rim; Pridgen missed a few he normally would make; Money missed a few wide-open short jumpers that for him are...money.

Our kids put in one helluva effort against a very good, possibly Final Four team. The energy we expended on defense took its toll.

But those missed shots at the rim, they still hurt. And Money's missed layup of a potentially highlight-reel finish, that will live with me forever as a metaphor for this game.

Spot on!

Yup. And there were several periods of about 1.5 minutes each, where the team had about 3 things go wrong right in a row (some of which were these missed shots). There was no collapse, tho. We needed Whitney and Money to be hot. I think the team was 5-11 from 3 in the first half, and then couldn't make many 3's. They had a terrific season. They got to where they wanted to go. They should be proud of what they did, with the coaches' guidance, of course. I really liked this team, even though I didn't follow them until later in the season. There were alot of very good and very unselfish players.

What a let down that Syracuse game was. The national pundits were predicting this as a potential upset and from the jump it was not competitive at all.

Agree with you completely save for Wisconsing being possibly a final four team. I think they will be lucky to get passed the round of 16. Happy to be wrong and say we played a final four team tight, though.

I think this BYU team is going to the Elite 8 but no one from this region bubbler brigade or multiple wives brigade is going to beat Duke in the Elite 8

Watching games the last couple days has been enlightening. Top tier teams like Florida and Duke are so damned talented they make it look effortless, men playing boys. BUT, as quick as that 20-30 pt lead was established, and starters substituted for their bench counterparts, that lead evaporates. They have those five, six, or seven players(future NBA players), then they play on par with the Griz and others.
Lipscomb, the Griz, and(fill n the blank) are not at the top tier even on their best days. They are fill material for an over-inflated bracket. Sixty-four teams is a joke. There are, maybe, sixTEEN teams worthy of playing. This is TV money, period. An ongoing commercial for the NCAA.
Did you see the Lady Scats game? After their magnificent season, a 20 point loss to Ohio State. A blowout. Check the Google definition of the term. But, don't dare call our 19 pt loss to Wisconsin a 'blowout'! Blasphemy!😂

Best teams money can buy. Who has the money? The BIG and SEC can pony up starter money at most schools to fill out rosters.

Bucky has more team speed than they usually have and can play more than one tempo so I'll agree with Citay. Multiple scoring options though the backcourt was not on from the 3 point line.

You just don’t get it. Everyone with any common sense knows the top seeds have superior talent. Congratulations on being enlightened Captain Obvious. The first round upsets are rare and always have been. But they do happen. This is the first time since 2017 that at least one of the top 4 seeded teams didn’t lose. Making the tournament for one of these lower seeds is an awesome thing for these players. I got an idea for you. Don’t start watching until Saturday next year. And if you don’t like watching Griz games even when they are winning then don’t watch. It will free up more time for you to yell at school kids as they walk on your lawn.

Maybe we should be trying to get to the 11/12 seed line where upsets are a lot more likely. 13 and 14 they happen but not regularly and 15/16 seeds winning is rare

____ ___, RICO. The post was pointing out the lack of depth by some of the best teams. Reading comprehension CAN be treated, by the way. THERE'S an idea for  YOU.

Read what you write. This is you. I know when you live in constant negativity it becomes difficult.

How come Drake who would get destroyed against Montana in football does a lot better than us in the NCAA Tournament for basketball?
Because they don’t give a shit about Football. They pump all their resources into Basketball. Perhaps if the Griz did that, we’d still be playing, but people would then be upset that we suck at Football.
