There is no getting around it, this past year was one of the worst in the history of Weber State basketball. You start out missing the services of Jones. Nobody else rebounded for 4 years, just stood and watched him do it. Then you lose 2 of your top 3 scorers to season ending medical issues. Relying on 4 freshmen players in major roles is only good for the future, but does little for this year. Those are all stinky excuses and we still should have done better. Now, next year will have an additional 5 or 6 freshmen on the team, three of which will likely have significant roles to play. It won't be a cake walk next year either. Will we improve? I sure hope so, but a lot will depend on getting a couple of high level transfers.
Dame stepping up is really just the latest. The last 2 years we have had a minimal amount of NIL money to work with. Dame has always disliked the idea of NIL at all. During the past 9 months our collective has really gotten active and raised significant amounts. There have also been some local businesses step up in a significant way, while some major donors have also stepped up. Dame, has recently accepted the new reality and is stepping up as well.
Coach Duft definitely has some distractors and some of them are real keyboard warriors. However, the people who have the real power, and contribute 95% of the money, are not ready to pull the plug on his ccoaching career. Can he and will he turn the program around? Well, I guess we will just have wait to see. At least he will have more resources to get the job done now.
