LadyGriz Lady Griz Coaching Hot Board

The WCC will be a much weaker WBB conference next season with the departure of three of its top four teams (OSU, WSU, and Gonzaga). Faulkner would have been an excellent hire and checked a lot of boxes.

I’m interested to see what route Montana takes with this hire (assistant coach, lower level head coach, etc.).

Equally interested to see if a coach can keep the roster intact. Lots of talent returning with Konig, Waddington, Zingaro, and others.

Those 3 schools leave the following yr from our understanding.

Are they inconsistent because Holsinger or is it because he's trying to change how they do things.

And they were going into the paint alot more when they were missing 3's.
Griz til I die makes up (or misses) a lot of stuff. First half wasn't awful. Close game with a couple little droughts for Lady Griz. Hanging with a team that beat them twice. Several nice drives by Konig. Strong rebounding and decent defense.

2nd half started about the same then they went off on offense. Make 3 or 4 threes in a row and game in hand. Hanging in the 1st half made the 2nd possible.

I make shit up? Why because I think we can do better than Harris? I gave the Lady Griz their flowers for winning this game but you can’t deny the LG have been all over the map since he took over. No disrespect to him. He’s had a tough job trying to hold the team together through all the turmoil but I personally think there’s better options out there.

Did the Cat's coach have either head coaching experience or recruiting ties to Montana when she was hired?
She was a Colorado HS BB players and played college ball at Boise State when it was in the Big Sky. Not sure of her Montana ties other than she played against the Griz and Cats.

Nate hasn't had a chance to put his stamp on the team as a head coach through an off-season and pre-season. He has Montana ties and has learned under great head coaches with the Jackets and the Cats. Being raised in Ronan, he gets what it means to be a Griz! With the win over Idaho, it looks like he made the adjustments that he needed to make to get the girls to play up tempo, attack-the-basket, and move without the basketball on offense. On defense, they were lock down on the ball and played great help defense with good blockouts for rebounds. Harris has this team improving and I wouldn't be surprised if they beat the Jacks.

Sayers has done great at Carroll but there is a huge difference between NAIA and Div 1. Same with Wooley. I have confidence that Haslam will get us a good coach and I still feel strongly about the ability to recruit MT players--there are some very good ones out there but for whatever reason we have totally stuck out the past several years. Take a look at the Cats roster and see the # of MT players with more on the way.
Griz have 4 MT players, 4 WA, 1 MN, 1 WI, 1 CO, and 2 international. Cats have 4 MT players, 4 WA players, 2 MN players, 3 international players.

I don't see much difference between the Griz and Cats in their rosters.

However, speaking from experience, players from WA, CA, MN, IA, WI, IL, AZ, CO have better development because they are playing in AAU games from the time they are 8. When you have to travel 800-1000 miles to participate in a AAU tournament, it limits the number of girls who can participate which limits the development of the girls. The girls are finally starting to be more like the boys in that respect.

Griz MN, you are right the Griz have 4 MT players but 2 of them are walk ons and barely play. Tell me how many MT players the Griz have coming next year and the year after and the answer is zero. as of now. Harris did a good job coaching yesterday but the MT native has yet to recruit a MT player during his tenure at UM

Who are the 2 walkons?

Edit. Looked it up. I assume Larson and Dick are walkons? Larson and Wacker are freshman. Dick is a junior so it seems a role player when she's able to play.

Is Larson related to the Brott's that play/played football for the Cats? I see its her mom's last name when I looked at the LG roster. Edit again, i just read an article that says her mom is from California so I would guess that's a no.

Lauren Dick and Chloe Larsen, both of whom played at Hellgate HS in Missoula.
As noted Lauren Dick and Chloe Larsen are the walk ons. According to LADY griz stats Larssen has played 11 minutes and Dick is not listed so one would assume it is 0 minutes. As comparison the 2 Cat frosh from MT high schools have 127 minutes for Erickson and 652 for Chirrick--big difference

Not that it necessarily changes the narrative, but Dick is redshirting.

I would prefer Wooley.

I agree with 406-how do you pass on an assistant coach that has won an NC in Montana as a head coach--and I think Coach Woolley won that NC right here in Billings in 2019, when we hosted the NAIA National tournament from 2017-19. ( And that was cool eating lunch or dinner @ Mont. Brewing Co. or Hooligan's in DT Billings. and watching all of these women's college teams wearing their school gear walk past us, sit down and eat !!! )

And Coach Lindsay Woolley is also a GRIZ, having graduated from UM with a degree in math. As the long-term coach @ Miles Community College and Western, an assistant @ Utah State, Coach Woolley checks all of the boxes.

And I do like Nate Harris more and more, a Tech Oredigger who lived right here in Billings for three years, being mentored by who else, Lady Yellowjacket's maestro Kevin Woodin and getting to the Sweet 16 with MSUB ( 25-8) in 2014 before heading west to Bozeman and learning under another great coach, MSU"s Tricia Binford and then as successful HC of Angelo State in Texas and having success there. Coach Harris , who I didn't realize was already a successful HC, also checks all of the boxes as well.

While I still love the idea of Lady Yellowjacket's HC Kevin Woodin, whose Lady Yellowjackets ( 25-7) play in the Div.II West Regionals on Sat. in California, as Lady GRIZ HC, I also love the idea of Woolley/Harris or vice versa continuing to lead our LG. I would give the first chair to Coach Woolley due to his NC ring, but either way, I think the LG are in for brighter days ahead with Woolley/Harris, both of whom have been both successful assistants and HC's, which already started yesterday with our upset of Idaho !!!

If we don't hire Kevin--and I doubt he wants to leave Billings now-- let's keep Coaches Woolley and Harris !!!

Because that was NAIA Basketball and this is D1 Basketball. That's 3 levels higher. IDK how many people remember our last candidate pool from 4 years ago, but it was quite good. Remember Mark Campbell who just led TCU to the Big 12 regular season title? He was about to take the Lady Griz job until his wife stepped in and said she refused to live in Montana. That's the caliber of candidates this job draws. We'd be doing ourselves a disservice if we just settled for Harris or Wooley.
