LadyGriz Lady Griz Coaching Hot Board

Just because they’re in the WCC doesn’t mean that’s a better job. That’s a place that has zero track record of winning ever.
NAU didnt either. Better conference, better facilities, better location to recruit. Downside....expensive to live and to hire quality assistant to live in the SD area. USD is a step up from the BSC and NAU.

USD alumni here... it is legitimately one of the nicest campus' in the country. USD and Pepperdine are pretty hard to beat in that department.

Also they have a ton of $$$. NIL dough will never be an issue there.

I think the primary criteria should be someone with MT ties and/or the proven ability to recruit the state of MT. Bobkittens are killing us in the recruiting battle and that can't continue. Next year we will have one MT recruit on the team with two walk-ons who rarely play. There are two players right in our own back yard who should be primary targets in the future--one at Loyola and the other at Frenchtown. Sullivan and Tinkle likely fit that criteria despite no HC experience. Remember Tinkle's dad had no HC experience when he became Griz HC and he did rather well. Others could be on the list also including Harris and Wooley but I would ask who they have recruited to play for the Lady Griz from MT

Did the Cat's coach have either head coaching experience or recruiting ties to Montana when she was hired?
Montana State is Binford's one and only head coaching job, so she had neither when they hired her. According to her MSU bio, she started as an assistant at Boise State (1999-2001) and then went to Utah State to reestablish the program there prior to her arrival in Bozeman.

Kevin Woodin, MSUB: His 2025 25-7 Div II
Lady Yellowjackets are composed overwhelmingly of Montana girls. ( Plus 30 years ago while wearing flannel shirts, jeans with holes in the knees, and Doc Marten's, he coached HS ball in the biggest city in our region, Seattle. And yes, I am being facetious, but Kevin does know some folks in Seattle--doesn't hurt !!!)

Random fact. His son, Garrett, is one hell of a good golfer.

Given the interest in Montana ties, what about Sayers at Carroll? 14 seasons, 300 victories. Grew up in Columbus, college ball at Weber, assistant coach at Weber, head coach at Carroll.

I just wanna mention for those of you advocating for Harris, Wooley, and Woodin, just because you know one of these guys or you think they're a good person, does not necessarily mean they're the best coach for the job. Plus being a successful coach at the D2 or NAIA level does not always mean you will be a successful D1 head coach. It's a completely different ball game. We need someone who can get this program back to a championship level and I'm not sure I see that in any of these guys. Do I think they could maintain the status quo and win some games like we've seen this year? Sure, but that's not the standard around here nor should it be. I think Haslam should look in a different direction.

Sayers has done great at Carroll but there is a huge difference between NAIA and Div 1. Same with Wooley. I have confidence that Haslam will get us a good coach and I still feel strongly about the ability to recruit MT players--there are some very good ones out there but for whatever reason we have totally stuck out the past several years. Take a look at the Cats roster and see the # of MT players with more on the way.

Totally disagree--a head coach knows more how to run a team--he or she has had to run an entire team on and off the court and not just a piece of it.

Whoever we hire--an head coach with great experience or an assistant, he or she.will not come with a warranty.

Haslam should be talking to both Wooley and Woodin--if Kevin doesn't apply, Haslam should call him. If Kevin isn't interested, he probably knows of some good candidates !!!

Nate had the LG playing pretty good today. Look how much defense improved. Could've easily beaten Idaho by 25 but took the foot off the gas. If you beat NAU tomorrow how do you feel about Nate at that point?

My problem with Nate is this team lacks consistency. Look no further than today's game. First half we looked awful, second half we looked great. When the threes weren't falling in the first half he decided to just let them keep bombing threes rather than trying something else. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again. This team has been all over the map since he took over. Today was a good day, but if we lose to NAU by 30 tomorrow? Does that give you confidence in him moving forward when those are the teams we should be competing with? NAU dropped 100 on us in Missoula. I'm skeptical tomorrow will go well.

They've been really inconsistent, but overall he's kept the program from totally falling off a cliff. I think he's earned it and would be good for continuity and for keeping (hopefully) players, but I don't live in that world to know enough about it.

They've been really inconsistent overall during Holsingers career, so is this a Holsinger remnant or better just to rip the bandaid off and start over? I dunno. I don't get paid enough to make those decisions. 🤣

I agree. The Ladies like him and play hard for him. The recruits like him (so far, the report is they are holding to their commitments). He is a Ronan boy. I don't want to start over, again.

Assuming players lover Harris/Woolley, and assuming they, as coaches, have fixed the toxic culture created by Holsinger,,, In 7 weeks they did manage to get a quarterfinals win which has been hard to come by the past 10 years. Maybe Holsinger was a much bigger problem than any of us know. I would be fine giving Harris/Woolley a chance to prove that they are indeed the coaches that can salvage the program.

The turnaround has been good enough to, IMO, earn him/them a one year deal.

Are they inconsistent because Holsinger or is it because he's trying to change how they do things.

And they were going into the paint alot more when they were missing 3's.
