LadyGriz Lady Griz Coaching Hot Board

Woodin would be a great choice, but I think he is close to retiring and may not want to start a new job. On the other end of the age spectrum, how about Kloppenburg-Pruitt at Southern Oregon (NAIA)? She is in her fourth year as a head coach and has gone 112-19, including 31-0 this year. In the last 10 years, she has worked on WNBA staffs (her father is a WNBA coach), and also at San Jose State, ASU, and Winthrop.

Wonder if she’s somehow related to Bob Kloppenburg - he was the architect of the Sonics swarming, trapping D in the late 80s to mid-90s. I think his son - Gerry was head coach of the Tulsa Shock of WNBA and ran the same defense.

She has definitely done a great job at SOU. She has a solid pedigree and could be a solid candidate.

She ahould be on someone's list for HC openings.

BYU just opened and that coach may be someone the LG look into. She was not highly successful at BYU but fits what Haslam maybe looking for. She also has a pretty decent player in her daughter that could transfer with her.

She was a HS coach prior to getting the BYU job and a lot of people were curious how that would work. Moving to Big 12 did not make her transition to college coaching any easier.

Her daughter is now in the portal. She will get snatched up quickly. Originally committed to Oregon and when her mom got the job at BYU she got the release and played for her mom.

She will get snatched up quickly

Ryan McCarthy of Alaska-Anchorage. His career head coaching record is Robin Selvigesque.

Record at UAA: 281-62 (.819), 12 seasons
Career Head Coaching Record: 295-75 (.797), 13 seasons

If you look at his roster at UofAA, you can see he can recruit nationwide. If he can recruit that talent to UofAA, what do you think he could do at Montana?

McCarthy is another solid candidate. Like mentioned earlier...highly successful at UAA.

Heard Paynes name come up more than once today for U San Diego. Also now that ASU is open could she make a run for that?

Is San Diego really a better job than NAU?
Probably. They're in the WCC and Payne would be filling some big shoes there, as their long-time coach in Cindy Fisher parted ways with the school after their season ended at the WCC Tournament on Friday. Fisher coached at USD for 20 years.

BigSkyBreakdown also brought up Arizona State and that too, could be a potential landing spot for Payne.

Kevin Woodin, HC of my other alma mater MSUB ( The "B" stands for Best) is in his 21st year here in Billings, he is the winningest coach in MSUB history with over 350 wins, he has led his girls to The Div. II Elite Eight, 2017-18, he graduates his girls and his teams routinely have a team GPA of 3.5 or higher, previous to MSUB he coached Billings West to back-to-back AA state championships in 2003-4, the impetus behind his hiring @ MSUB, and previous to that, he taught math and coached @ O' Dea HS in Seattle. He graduated from Carroll ( BA) and Seattle Pacific ( Master's Degree.)

Kevin is about 60 and is probably content to stay here in Billings, but he should at least be in the conversation because he's the most successful women's bball coach in Montana not named Binford !!!

Kevin will be retiring in the next year or two. He is grooming his assistant to take his place. He would have zero interest in the job.

Hire a coach that hasn't proved they can win, at least at this level, and you will be having this same conversation in a couple of years. How many more years are the fans in the seats going to keep buying tickets that go up every year to watch a middle/bottom of the conference team? Last season was fun. 20 win seasons are expected, hire wisely

If-- A huge IF because I don't think it will happen.--Kevin Woodin, HC of MSUB with 369 wins in 21 years ( 369-234, .612 ), 25-7 in 2025, whose Div. II Lady Yellowjackets will probably now advance to the Div. II Regionals, applies, he has at least earned an interview.

I don't know if Kevin is even interested, but the boy from Libby, Carroll grad, has won state championships @ Billings West and conference championships in The GNAC ( Great Northwest Athletic Conference ) can coach a little basketball 🏀, his teams excel both on the court and in the classroom, and should he throw his hat in the ring, at the age of 60, we probably don't have to worry about him in 3-4 years leaving for " greener grass " elsewhere.

I am totally a Homer as a both s MSUB and UM alum, but I don't care if you're from Mars, Kevin Woodin is a great coach and should he apply and interview for the LG job, I think both Robin Selvig and Trish Binford, whose teams have played Kevin's MSUB teams, would vouch for Kevin's coaching ability !!!

Haslam should at least put out feelers for Steve Gomez at Lubbock Christian to see if he's interested. He's won three D2 Natty's in the last 9 years.

McCarthy of UAA has been mentioned several times. My niece played for him a decade ago. They won a lot of games and lost in the D2 championship her senior year. His teams play a lot like Binfords recent teams (suffocating defense).

He was a bit immature back then but he's 10 yrs older so I couldn't say if that is still true.

Fun fact, McCarthy WAS married to Binfords sister. That could crank up the rivalry another notch or two.

Jordan Sullivan and Jos Tinkle are my favorites.

Jos would need more time to grow in the position. Wayne needed that too. He was wise in adding veteran coaches to his early staffs.

Jordan Sullivan would transition quickly.
Both have Montana Basketball royalty families.

Plus, the program has been down for a decade. It's a perfect time for to hire a young 1st time head coach.

In my opinion, they're both no brain decisions.
