MBBALL Griz vs PSU Game Thread

Poor clock management at the end of regulation.

Not only that but it seems like holding for the last shot always ends up with a stagnant possession, likely iso somehow, and an out of rhythm shot. Lady Griz are also terrible at how they handle end of period possessions (almost always ending in an empty possession but a lot of time giving the opponent run-out free baskets, as well, since everybody is standing around after the miss).
Agree, and I don't understand the lack of a Griz offensive system. Sometimes it appears Travis is just cheerleader, and not coaching an offensive play system.

My lying goddamned eyes. He won more games than all those other coaches because Haslam wouldn't show him the door, and nobody else wanted him. Are you implying that he is better than Tinkle, Montgomery, Taylor, Morrill, or Heathcote? 🙄

If you're going to crow about all the games he has won, you have to recognize how many he has lost, potty mouth. 🤣
Yet he broke the wins record in 100+ less games? I'm guessing Jiggs stunk too.

As for DeCuire not being wanted elsewhere, you're wrong. He's had other opportunities. If moving on was that important to him, he likely would have accepted other opportunities.

My understanding is, he only wants a power conference job. At the very least a high mid major opportunity. The jobs he would move on for aren't available. He lost out on the Washington job.

I honestly feel, big money isn't as important to DeCuire as it is to others.
He's at Montana until he finds his perfect opportunity.

For 30 minutes yesterday Montana lacked a consistent answer for PSU's physical defense. I felt the same way watching that game that I did watching the Lady Griz against MSU a week ago. Some of it is how PSU plays defense and the other part of it is how for 35 minutes the officials handled that physicality. The last five minutes plus overtime, they went whistle happy (four and one's) and called everything at the basket but nothing from 25 feet in. That is just how the game went, but when they started doing that all the pace of the game ended and it is a lot more difficult to break that PSU defense. That is three games in a row and unless you have a lot of really good sets and a great motion offense, the defense is going to set its feet and anchor itself.

I'll say this..Money went on a 5 minute run that was pure art form and one of the best individual displays we've seen this BSC season. Travis let them play, let them defer to Money and he took over. He ran out of gas and to be honest had two or three opportunities in that last 4 minutes to go all individual and break down PSU and he opted for the extra pass.

Its a disappointing loss and it is a game the Griz shouldve have won. I don't think it changes the trajectory of this team, and it is best suited than just about any BSC team to win the type of tournament that the BSC has set up.

Decuire not only has more wins than Heathcote but a better winning percentage, too.

Top 5 all-time for wins goes:

2 George Dahlberg22122316
3 Wayne Tinkle158918
4 Mike Montgomery155768
5 Blaine Taylor141667

But since the 70's, the top winning percentages are:

1 Blaine Taylor.6817
2 Larry Krystkowiak.6772
3 Mike Montgomery.6718
4 Stew Morrill.6585

If Travis gets the team to March Madness this season, he’ll be on the list of coaches who could take a bigger job.

There are plenty of coaches on the hot seat, and Travis has a winning record and a track record of being able and now willing to use the portal to roster build. It’s literally just a question of whether he can win out in Boise this time, and those opportunities will be there.

Even if the Griz bow out in Boise, he’s still a viable candidate. David Riley, Danny Sprinkle, and Shantay Leggins have all taken bigger paychecks in the last few seasons, it’s probably going to happen with TD soon. His network of schools and AD’s who respect his integrity and ability to lead have to be vast at this point in his career. I agree that he’s probably quite particular about what kind of program he’d jump to from Missoula. But there are a lot of schools out there that are a jump in pay from the Big Sky Conference level.

I think you’re absolutely correct in your assessment of Travis’s upward mobility. He is very loyal to the University and the bb program. However he is also very pragmatic in that if the big bucks come calling he needs to think of his family first. One cannot blame him for that. With so much upheaval in the coaching ranks this year no doubt a bigger conference will come calling. He does have the luxury of being picky and his recruiting prowess is West and Northwest. I know Utah just fired their coach but as stated by another blogger the fans in Utah still have a hardon for LK. He left town with a $6M+ buyout. I think Wayne T is good for another year, I think his contract runs through 26 if I remember. Sprinkle has a multi year contract at UDUB so he’s good for awhile. I haven’t followed CAL or Stanford this year so don’t know what their situation is like. When all is said and done I hope Trav stays for many more years with the Griz.
Go Griz!

He’s a solid coach and human being.

Travis isn’t just limited to the West. He spent a long while out on the East Coast while working at Old Dominion. I could easily see him staying in Missoula for the length of his career, or taking another job that pays a salary that is life changing (like Sprinkle, Krystal, and Tinkle).

He’s in great shape, and if he has an agent, they’ve got a pretty easy job if he were looking to move.

If TD was going anywhere, it would have happened a few years back, when he was an up and coming, young coach. At this point in his career, he is neither young nor up and coming. He has arrived at a point where the options may not be as good as they once were. He is a very good coach, right where he is at. I don't see him making any big jumps. I certainly could be wrong, but that is how I see it. He will finish his career at UM.

Think of Jim Larrañaga at James Madison who ended up making him a ton of money. I was at Sweet 16 in DC when they beat Wichita State and UConn. They he got contract at Miami in his 60s I’m guessing. I think if he wins tourney he will get more looks. He’s only 53.
