MBBALL Griz vs PSU Game Thread

Well that sucked. Money with a legacy game and then we go away from him in the final 4 minutes there which makes no sense. As soon as Sawyer fouled out at the start of OT, I knew it was over. Felt like PSU got every single break in this game. In some ways I’m relieved cause I was worried about going into the tournament with a super long win streak. Just sucks that now we’re staring down the barrel of a 2 seed unless NAU can help us out tonight. Let’s all pull out our NAU gear tonight. I think they got a chance but I’m not holding my breath.

Have to agree on the win streak point ... that would have put just a slight bit of extra pressure to keep it going. Can do without that.

Would love to see the Griz win a sole season championship (don't overlook EWU). But I couldn't give hoot if we end up with a 2-seed. Both 1 and 2 get bottom-level opponents in their opening games and then a day off. Big deal ... they still have to win three games to go all the way.

I want to second what GTID said--while football is obviously a different sport, as the 15-0 S___tty Kitties found out after playing NDSU in Frisco, the time to lose is during the regular season and not the championship game, as the now forever 15-1, and national runners up, not national champion, MSU SK's learned the hard way !!!

Losing now sucks--losing in the Big Sky tourney ends your season or, at best, sends us to a second ( NIT ) or third-tier ( CBI ) tournament 🤔.

Based on the Griz numbers (BPI. NET, etc.), they would stand no chance of an NIT invite. Especially since the "experts" are eager to send half or more of all the Power Four teams to the NCAA or NIT tournaments.

Basically it comes down to this:

Montana win plus any NoCo loss for outright title. Otherwise Montana will lose the tiebreak, at least the way I read the tie break rules.

Sitting here watching UNC blast NAU. I’m gonna say this right now, if Shane Burcar is still the head coach at NAU next year, then it’s clear NAU doesn’t give two shits about Men’s Basketball. It’s unbelievable how bad they are with such an experienced team. McLaughlin, Tout, and Fort’s talents have been completely wasted.

Poor clock management at the end of regulation.

Tied at 63, Griz ball with 55 seconds left and you have a timeout to set up something that will get you a good shot in 5 or at most 10 seconds so that you can get an extra possession, right? Nope. Griz inbound near halfcourt and basically proceed to just hold the ball and do a couple senseless hand-offs for a "last" shot (ran 20 secs of the remaining 25 secs of the shot clock). I don't have a problem with the step-back 3 from Money that happened to miss but the lack of urgency that squandered the 2-for-1 opportunity is what's frustrating. PSU rebounded the miss with about 32 seconds left meaning they could now hold for the last shot to either win or go to OT.

(Of course, PSU went for a fast break and the Griz got extremely fortunate with Patterson's amazing block that rolled off the PSU big and out of bounds to get that last possession back, which the Griz then understandably now held for the last second shot, although missing another 3 instead of attacking the basket like what had been working.)

But back to with 55 seconds on the clock. If you get even a low percentage shot off with about 45 seconds left and miss it, PSU can then at most only run the clock down to 15 seconds (barring an offensive rebound), so you would have had that 2nd possession almost guaranteed that they happened to just luck into by Patterson's great play.

Not only that but it seems like holding for the last shot always ends up with a stagnant possession, likely iso somehow, and an out of rhythm shot. Lady Griz are also terrible at how they handle end of period possessions (almost always ending in an empty possession but a lot of time giving the opponent run-out free baskets, as well, since everybody is standing around after the miss).
