GFP - chat with Kent Haslam

I know I'm the main poster of the GFP on here but this really is a group thing - I'm just sharing the message here. Mike, Luke, Kyle - and even James were all together on organization for this. We're working on a few more fun winter/spring episodes that are a little different than our normal, "lets have a few beers and chat for hours" pods

If we can get some sort of 1 day NIL fundraiser we could do all the fun stuff:

- Riley v Kent
- GFP trying to either score or defend a penalty kick
- GFP trying to hit a softball pitch

Haha - I can think of so many more things where we'd all look so awful against college athletes
🙋‍♂️ Mike “returns” a punt.

No dunk tank?????

I’m not arguing the cost. I’m saying it SHOULDN’T cost that much. I’m as big a capitalist as the next guy, but within reason. The prices are ridiculous and these companies have to be making a killing (to Soldier’s point)…
Helmets only is 70k

Sheep...all of us.

We'll pay what they charge...that's my point.

Trust me - I have spent more than a nice ROTH IRA for a mid-career dude on gear. Market needs some competition.
All you experts on competition, cost, and free market are hilarious. What would you expect it to cost to equip a football player for an entire year? News flash, it costs money to play football. My expense for my kid to play missoula youth tackle football is expensive. Let alone grown men with way more sophisticated equipment.

The fact this has become the main take away from the interview... wtf. Even more brilliant... I can't wait when the new iteration of the speed flex is born on this site. Cheaper and better protection, how can anyone say no! 🤣🤣🤣

Soccer has more concussions than football. The best we can all do is remind everyone and their brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers of this fact. I don't see soccer gnashing their teeth over cost of helmets, yet they skate free with zero concern of it. Soccer is the first sport trying to make the kids specialize in one sport, and from the conversations I'm having with parents of Soccer kids, the first sport their kids want to quit as they get older. Yet, Soccer seems to interfere with spring, summer, winter, and fall sports. They get their claws into the kids and parents quickly. Fascinating!!

Congratulations nick. You just won the dumbest most incoherent post of 2025 award.

GTFOOH.

I'm sorry, you seemed particularly offended about the cost of protecting the players, saying the helmet / gear industry needs more competition. It's a fairly competitive market, more so than ever.

Apologies if I misunderstood your point. And my rant about soccer. 🤣 that's just been a point of contention of mine recently. It is true though, soccer has more concussion risk than football, but somehow football gets the bad rap for it. The expense is a lot, but as was pointed out prior, there is a ton of R&D that is embedded in the cast as well.

No, of course. Didn't mean to exclude the remainder of the GFPers, but as you suggest, you're the only one (regrettably) who posts on here regularly.

I know people would definitely donate to the fundraiser to see you guys get tackled by a linebacker:

Anybody remember that show "Pros vs Joes"? It put up average, everyday fans against a pro or recently removed pro attempting to do like what was discussed on the GFP (score a penalty kick, hit a softball from a D1 player, etc).

There was a guy (a "Joe") ttempting to tackle a former NFL running back Ricky Williams. The video doesn't show it, but I think the guy ended up with a concussion and some cracked ribs.

That is just simply not true. Football has the highest rate of concussions. Girls soccer is second. Stop lying and read a book.

https://www.cdc.gov/heads-up/data/index.html
I'm highly involved in youth sports, quit being condescending... and ignorant. Girls youth soccer quite literally has the highest rate of concussions per 10,000 kids (per capita). Boys soccer is up there too. Not saying it's not an issue in football (obviously it is), but there is way more focus, attention, and money spent to prevent concussions in football than I've ever heard in soccer.

It plays a huge part into why the equipment is as expensive as it is. I'm just telling facts. Again, my point is it's interesting to me that this is a significant news flash for many on this board.

I am also involved in youth sports, and am married to a certified athletic trainer. I took your advice on ignorance and dove into it a bit more.

I couldn't find anything that suggested girls soccer has a higher rate per 10,000 kids. What I found was that girls in soccer experience 8.19 concussions per 10,000 and football players experience 10.4 per 10,000. The numbers change a little bit, and in most cases get closer, when you consider both the practice and competition combined together. And I found that girls are more likely to get a concussion, but by and large football always "wins" when it comes to the amount and rate at which concussions happen. Overall, while I knew there was a lot of concussions in girls soccer, I didn't realize the numbers could be so similar.

All good. It's similar and football takes the brunt of the negative press about it. Football currently is as safe as it's ever been, unfortunately it does cost $$ to continue to stay ahead ar at least up to date with safety protocols.

This is the exact take away you should get from the pod. The interview itself was all smoke and mirrors. Softball was played that day as discussed.

As a physician that specializes in sports medicine, I can tell you that both of you are correct. Football and girls soccer go back and forth as to which is the "concussion king", although rugby and hockey trend highly as well. We are talking rates obviously, because as far as volume, because of participation numbers, football wins that battle. And truth be told, it's even divided out as to practice vs games. Rugby, I believe leads in per capita practice. I'd have to look at the most recent data, as it changes yearly.

Pretty softball interview. An opportunity lost.

Holy shite. You really are a dumbass

What, do you think the hosts work for Fox News or something? It’s a pod cast by a few fans as a hobby, usually while drinking. They are lucky to get anyone from the admin dept above the janitor.

Let’s hear some of the hard-hitting questions you would have asked Kent. Lemme guess, “Why don’t you schedule an NAIA team every year?”

They could have interviewed the janitor with close to the same results.
