Chad Germer ➡️ EWU

I'm curious to hear from Griz fans if this is a good hire. I've honestly been less than impressed with most of his hires, and he seems to run off good coaches.

Anyway, I hope he does well. We need all the luck we can get until Best's contact is up lol.

The truth is Germer developed some serious studs during his first go around here way back in the Joe Glenn era, but his second tenure (2015-2023) here the results were decidedly more lackluster. The offensive line here never attained the dominance we were sold when Bobby was hired.

To my uneducated-never-played-the-game eye, Germer struggled coaching OLs in the style of most offenses now. In his first go-round here, UM was a down-hill running team. Just not certain he ever adapted to or embraced the advent of the spread offenses focused more on zone blocking

I always wondered how the oline could have been so good the first time and so mediocre the second time. This explanation makes a lot of sense.

I think Coach Germer is a very good O line coach--wasn't he still here in 2023 for our Frisco run ?

I think our O line struggles early in Hauck 2.0 ( 2018-19) had a lot to do with a lack of talent on the O line and recruiting busts from the Stitt era, where Chad was also our O line coach, but that we saw marked improvement from 21-23, when Germer's tenure ended, at least for now.

Coach Germer is a former GRIZ O lineman himself as well as longtime GRIZ assistant so I hope that his Eastern O lines play well except against his alma mater, us !!!

One other note on Eastern and their hire of Chad Germer: Aaron Best himself is the former Eastern OL Coach and according to my friend in Billings that played ar Eastern 20 years ago, an excellent O line coach. So Coach Best hiring Chad Germer is a real vote of confidence in Germer from a peer to coach a key position of Eastern's prolific offense--EWU hung 49 on us and unbelievable 77 against Idaho State. Eastern's and Coach Best's problem has not been its offense, it's been its porous, terrible defense !!!

When I saw my Eastern friend last night, I mentioned " Going Portaling," the article by Frank Gogola that appeared yesterday in The Billings Gazette and probably all of the other Lee newspapers in Montana. I recommended that he read the article if he had not already and told him that we were picking up kids from Power 5 schools like Tennessee, Arizona State, and BYU.

He asked me," Is that the one about Wortham ?" I told him it was and he kind of frowned--I could tell he was ticked off about Eastern losing their Swiss Army knife All-American Michael Worttham to us. Grimacing, he told me, " Yeah, I read it !" His reaction supported the articles I read on how special an athlete Michael Wortham is !!!

Couldn't disagree more. While we recently had some good individual players (Cook, etc), the offensive line as a whole has never really impressed.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree then, 75. We didn't beat the Shi##y Kitties twice, 2021, 2023, beat a good Idaho team on the road in Moscow in '23, beat Cam Miller and NDSU @ WA-GRIZ in the semi's, and have Eli Gilman win the Jerry Rice Award for most outstanding freshman offensive player in '23 behind a poor O line that featured All-Conference linemen in Forbes, Walker and Casey in '23. I am not saying there wasn't any room for improvement--there was, I am saying Chad Germer is a good O line coach and if he wasn't, Eag's head man and former O Line Coach Aaron Best that was an assistant on the last Big Sky Conference team ( EWU, 2010) to win the NC, wouldn't have hired him !!! Our O line took a step back this year hopefully just due to 3 new starters @ LT, LG and C and the growing pains associated with replacing Walker and Forbes.( As I already mentioned, if Coach Best--IF--he can ever improve their Swiss cheese defense, the Eags could be kinda good.)

From 2018-2024, Hauck 2.0, we have had one assistant on staff that won a FCS/1-AA National Championship with the GRIZ: Chad Germer. And since Chad has served 2-3 separate tours as our O line coach, we just may see him in Missoula again back at his alma mater coaching our O line.

Go GRIZ !!!

Coming back again? Why? Gross.

Yay! The Return of MOLA (Mediocre Offensive Line Attitude)

Also who gives a shit if Germer won a Natty close to 25 years ago? The game and blocking schemes have changed substantially in that time.

We got to Frisco in '23 after Germer's responsibilities were limited from the entire OL the year before to just the centers and guards. "We got better when he did less" is not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Pretty sure that Eastern HC Aaron Best knows a little bit more about coaching the O line than either of you two do combined !!!

And though schemes may have changed, Coach Germer is not a block of wood and has a UM education--he has adapted well to the changes and that is one of the reasons we had a very successful 2023.

And finally, the right tackle or left tackle and tight end do not make line calls, the center--QB of the O Line-- does, and who coached our All Big Center AJ Forbes in 2023---yes, Chad Germer !!!
