MBBALL UNC Game Thread

UNC is always a good regular season team, but coach Smiley’s teams usually under perform during the conference tourney. It’s still anyone’s title.

It was a much worse ass kicking in person. They out played and out hustled the GRIZ.

I didn't like anything I saw in this game.
The GRIZ just were off in every aspect.
Looked like two different teams, today and vs. SDSU a month ago. Disappointing that a key early conference tilt was played with such a lack of urgency. We bailed with 9 to go, can't remember doing that ever and have been at games in 6 decades.

We missed everything. To say there was a lid on the basket would be an understatement. Nothing worked right tonight

I'm fine with missed shots.
I'm not fine with terrible execution.
Ball movement, iso game, and spacing were all terrible. Shots don't fall with that recipe.

Well I just got off my flight to see that the Griz got dominated! Ouch! 52-26 points in the paint is never gonna get the job done. Severely outrebounded, shooting percentage was awful, free throw shooting was awful, only one guy in double figures scoring is awful etc. I cannot recall a game where we’ve lost that bad at home.

UNC over the years has been a really tough matchup for us, especially at home. Even going back to the Jeff Linder days, we’ve really struggled with them. Not sure why, but they need to figure it out as it could be a battle between us and them for the league title in Boise. Bad news is I don’t see where UNC picks up a loss at. May be a while before they drop one.

Sometimes you just don’t play very well and the other team makes everything. That’s Basketball. Pick yourself up off the mat and get ready for a big road trip to Weber and ISU. Bengals finally hit a speed bump tonight at home against Weber. It’s pivotal that the Griz get a split on this road trip at a minimum. May even need a sweep to keep pace with UNC.

Watch the game on demand to see how bad the GRIZ played.

As for UNC, they're beatable.
I'd attack them by spreading them out with a lot of iso and 2 man schemes.

Defensively, just got to be disciplined against them. Can't over play against them. Stick with their main shooters and shadow the rest. They beat the GRIZ over and over with off the ball cuts. Match up zones, box and 1s, or simply staying with your man will minimize them.

Got to shake up their cohesion with their offense. Sawyer absolutely has to start using his size and strength. I don't care who the team is, he's got to start throwing bodies like rag dolls.

Speaking of bigs, Bradtke has to learn to rebound and play defense. He needs strength. Our bigs need a dose of Qvale working with them. That's very possible. He lives in Missoula and would be willing to help.

Cannot remember a game when EVERY Grizzly player could not make a shot. And were so completely dominated in the paint. It was an embarrassing loss, no question. Too bad, there was a good crowd. Many of those in attendance won't come back.

Missed the game. Glad I did. But two e.s.p. thoughts.

First, while the Big Sky is mid-major, it occasionally throws off Power Four and NBA talent, both at the coaching and player levels, enough to dominate the conference for a year or more. Ben Howland was one such coach and Dalton Knecht one such player. Could well be that Steve Smiley is such a coach and Langston Reynolds such a player (whom we tried to recruit out of Denver East, Micheal Ray Richardson's high school.) Sometimes the other team simply has the better coach and the better talent.

But second, if you're gonna play at a championship level in basketball, ya gotta show up ready, intense, focused and maybe even rabid for every single game, every single night. Larry K brought that intensity to Montana basketball, and Jud Heathcote was a raging ranting psychopath on the sidelines when his team failed to meet his expectations. Basketball is an urban-in-your-face disgrace affair: You can't show up like choir boys and expect to win. Hopefully our kids got that lesson earlier rather than later.

yeah - there needs to be a rebounder/ hustler on Griz roster.

Oh man, I can remember, Tinkle's teams had some real head scratchers. Case in point:

I remember being so disgusted by this game.

It’s time to write this one off, move on, put it in the rear view mirror. Critical games coming up this weekend with ISU and Weber. The worst they can do is split if they want to stay close to UNC. Basketball can be such a mental game that dwelling on last weeks letdown can only create self doubt which is the poison that fuels defeat.
Trav has been around the block so he knows how important it is to put this game behind them. It wasn’t just a defeat but a total disaster unlike we’ve seen from a fellow BSC team. Two nights prior the cats lost to this same team by a single point.
