NIL…Just a thought

I know the NIL committee has been trying to raise money for the NIL and maybe this has some value. Split-the-Pot. I think the split on the pot goes to athletic dept and the winning number. I would almost bet that with a total of 7 or even 8 home games the athletic dept racks in north of $50,000, maybe even more. Extend it to men’s and women’s basketball with 15 home games each we could be talking around $100,000 that could be split between the 3 sports.
One complaint I do have with the split-the-pot process is I can never find one of the people to buy a ticket. I usually put in $20 when I can find a ticket seller. It needs to be better organized. Sell thru the 1st quarter. I feel it’s just an after thought on the AD when if organized properly it could be a big boost to the NIL.

They are all over before and during the games.

If even 10,000 of the 20,000 season ticket holders donated $30 a month it would generate the following:

10,000 x 30 x 12 =3,600,000

If all 20,000 donated monthly

20,000 x 30 x 12 =7,200,000

Hopefully my math isn’t wrong 😎

If you said $3 per month you might be on to something, but I don't see regular folks giving money so the football program can pay teenagers. I think the business' in Missoula should pony up. Most communities in Montana that host high school events work with their hotels to establish a TBID. Here is the link to the one in Missoula. https://tbid.destinationmissoula.org/meet-the-board/ Call them and let your voices be heard.

I have a couple of thoughts on NIL.
1. Stop calling it NIL. NIL was just as way to break the glass on paying collegiate athletes pretending that businesses would put a name image or likeness in commercials or other advertising. But it has become a way to pay athletes for simply playing the game. Call it what it is - salaries. Not a very fair system either but that is another issue.
2. I have no issue with how any of you spend your entertainment income so if you want to pay $30 bucks a month go for it. But it's a damn poor business model. I can get Viking tickets pretty much anytime - cheap seats for a little over $100 (probably half of what Griz tickets cost). But I never feel like I'm paying Sam Darnold's salary. That's because the Vikings are a for profit business and if they can't make it on tickets, tv and merch revenue and whatever their other souces of cash are they will go out of business. They don't come out begging fans to pay a monthly fee so they can pay salary. But apparently UM and many/most collegiate athletic programs can't financially successfully put a product on the table any more without putting the hustle on fans so the team can pay the top recruits the big bucks. Can't prove it true but it is said that some "skill players" are getting over a million a year, offensive and defensive lineman $100 k per year and going up, up, up every year. Ultimately it will prove unsustainable for many programs, and UM may be on of those. They will not be able to afford to buy the players you all want to have a chance to win that high powered FCS title. I admit I had a good time watching both semis last weekend on tv but damned if I'm going to pay more for college athletics than the ticket price and if they keep raising those watch what will happen to attendance.

If my understanding is correct, the payment cannot come from the University according to the current law, so that is a big part of why the collectives are asking fans for money. I don't think that your overall feelings about the situation are wrong, but I don't think in the current system the University could pay the players to play.

Also, just for full transparency, Griz tickets are not yet coming anywhere close to $200 for a non-premium seat.

Elrod, thanks for the clarification. For correction I said that Vikings tickets were upward of $100 not $200 but that is irrelevant. Can you explain to me the NIL (read pay to play) colletive's accountability requirements? How much did they collect in 2024? Which players were blessed with these payments? How are the decisions made on who to pay and on who to pass on? Is the collective subject to audit? What happens when an OL or DL becomes worth $200.000 a year and we can't buy one? I'm not trying to being argumentive and understand we, and I imagine a whole host of others, are struggling with this. I'm just not seeing that the 6 to 8 FCS teams that are actually capable of winning an FCS championship can compete in this market. And what happens to the 100 plus FCS teams that are basically irrelevant in the FCS. Just see this as a sad day for collegiate football as we once new it.

I think doing it to help facilitate a move to FBS would be quite successful, maybe moreso then "paying teenagers" as you put it. I'd be willing to donate as much as i could for that personally.

I do not know the accountability requirements, or the financial numbers. I'm sure you know those are not publicly available. I absolutely agree with your point that the pay ranges are outrageous, and that Montana really cannot afford to play in the pool of NIL costs that that highest end. Totally in agreement.

My only point was that the school itself cannot pay the athletes, and that is why it is being done through collectives. At least, that is my understanding. We have many lawyers on this board, but I am not one of them, so I try not to speak out of turn on what the law says. Part of your point seemed to be that fans shouldn't have to be kicking in this kind of money, when the school is collecting so much money from fans already for items like tickets, so the fans shouldn't also be footing the bill to payout on the NIL. I was just trying to helpfully explain that the reason that fans and local businesses are footing the bill is because the school itself is banned from paying the athletes to play.

I believe most of the people selling Split the Pot tickets are volunteers either on or associated with non-revenue sports, primarily track & field. I believe they bet a cut of the money for their efforts.

10,000 x 30 x 12 =3,600,000

Hopefully my math isn’t wrong 😎
This is how we will be able to compete with our huge fan base. I know some can't, but if you are able to give $10 or more a month, please consider becoming a member of our NIL Collective Good Ol' Grizzlies: https://www.goodolgrizzlies.com/purchase-membership
As for the 50/50 idea: I think it is a great idea! If and when the House settlement passes in July, this and many other revenue generating things the University does can be used to directly fund athletes.

Back in the day I used to do spread sheets on columnar pads with a pencil and eraser. Then came along write up programs and excel. Great tools which helped grow my practice. I either adapted or failed. If the Grizzly athletic program can’t adapt and grow in today’s environment it to will fail. I am currently an annual donor to our NIL efforts. I am a passionate fan and try my hardest to support the program. Bottom line is if we don’t keep up in todays NIL environment we won’t be successful. Hell I know people who spend $10.00 a morning on a cup of coffee. Please understand that there are areas of the football team itself that I believe need addressing but am only commenting on NIL. Put up or…..

Montana nor any another FCS program will compete in NIL against FBS schools. The majority of fans aren't giving up their $10 coffee to pay a teenager to play football. It's not going to happen. UM will compete consistently by developing players that can takeover for those leaving in the portal, much like the cats did with their O-line.
