Just saw that Malia has died. No cause of death noted. She was the first native recruited to UM by Coach Selvig.

She was a ground-breaker, a pace-maker and a consummate team player. She moved so... I guess I would say "smoothly" on the court. I had the privilege of interviewing her twice. She always deferred to her teammates. I consider her a somewhat under-rated but essential individual within the scope of GrizWBB history. I assume there will be an observance at tonight's game.

Very sad. That was an amazing era of women’s basketball in Missoula. As it has been stated, very cool that Coach Selvig recruited her out of Browning. Rest in Peace.
There was a time when Montana's Native American community was represented by the Griz. Malia. Tuff Harris. Mike Chavez. Tamara Guardipe. JR Camel. And so many others.
If we don’t recruit them, we will miss many good athletes.

Correct. There are great athletes on our reservations, it was cool to see the Running Rabbit kid from browning sign last season. I hope we see this continue.! Watching Malia, JR Camel, Chavez, Tuff, and many others has been awesome. Will never forget JR camel hanging from the rim in '93 after the hellgate knights defeated billings west in dalberg arena in front of a packed house. One of the most special talents to come out of our state. Still dominates 3v3 hoops tournaments to this day.

That Championship game was incredible! Glad they had the foresight to actually televise it back then!
That is so true... I wish they'd televise more high school events on local channels like this.! We played Thursday night televised AA football games in the early 2000s. The '93 game in dalberg was incredible live, the state chipper rematch was televised statewide as well. So cool.
