BOZEMAN — Amidst a football season generating unprecedented success, Montana State University director of athletics Leon Costello announced on Monday that head coach Brent Vigen has agreed to a new four-year contract.

The No. 1 Bobcats play second-seeded North Dakota State in the FCS national championship game on Monday, Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas. Montana State’s current 15-game winning streak is the longest in school history, and its 15-0 record marks the most wins by an MSU team.

Great news for Bobcat fans!

He’s a good coach and seems like a good guy. Cats have done a good job hiring coaches over the last few years. As have the Griz. Both schools continue to field real competitive teams. But just remember if he wins it this year and has another good year next year schools will buy his Cat contract out to get him. So an extension means about as much as a players commitment in today’s college football.

I agree with this. No way he is there for four-years.

Agree, although they did build in a hefty buyout clause so if Vigen does leave soon..... there will be a nice additional cushion to sweeten the pot and get another top notch coach.

....really is anybody surprised the guy has done a great job ...why
wouldn't they try to keep him...but I think in time he goes the temptation
will be too great to stay in FCS...he will want to compete with the big boys..

Hefty?? Those amounts are child’s play for any FBS program. You say so many idiotic things here, it’s almost impressive.

The average buyout for FBS coaches is 16 Million. Yes Million.

“If Montana State relieves Vigen of his coaching duties prior to Dec. 1, 2025, Vigen is due $450,000. That number drops to $350,000 between Dec. 2, 2025 and Dec. 1, 2026; $300,000 between Dec. 2, 2026 and Dec. 1, 2027; and the lesser of $300,000 or an amount equal to the portion of the base salary and benefits remaining after Dec. 2, 2027.
The buyouts are the same should Vigen terminate the contract early.”

A $450k max buyout is like an overdue charge at the library for an FBS program.

“Hey, I want your coach.”
“It’ll cost you, mister. A whole $450k. Whatchu think about that?!”
“Cool. Here you go. Later.”

Don't the Regents and Executive Director approve the contract and its amount. The school doesn't get to set the amount, and the Regents/Director have to consider the other school's coach's salary and other salaries. Another incorrect comment by you. I am going to start pointing out your incorrect comments if I see them. But assume you'll disappear in about a week. Yes, this is a prediction, i.e. I assume you'll disappear.

The school sets the amount and the regents rubber stamp it. BV will make significantly more than BH and should.

Not true. If that were the case, the contracts would be bigger. I know some of the Regents. I know the Executive Director. I know the Governor. You know nothing. Did you get a response text from Bobby today? I did.

Wat? Where the fuhk did I say anything about who sets the buyout amounts? I think you're confused again.

But you did say the whopping 400k was a hefty buyout clause….thats like a hand full of pennies to any fbs program wanting to grab a coach. Again the avg buyout at that level is 16 million. You say some really dumb shit here.

450K. Yes I know that isn't much when compared to big time FBS programs, but we aren't in the FBS.
