NIL Questions

Many on the board seem to understand NIL as it applies to FCS football. I don’t, thus I have questions as follows: 1-Without naming players, what are some of the amounts currently being paid to Griz players? 2-Are we competitive with other FCS programs? 3-Who decides the amount a player will receive? 4-Is any FCS NIL program competitive with a FBS NIL program?

1-These numbers aren't publicly available, but I'd imagine our top players are getting upwards of low 6-figures (there are some rumors of a guy or two getting $200k, but AFAIK they're just rumors), and it goes down from there. I am guessing that the vast majority of players on the team are probably not making more than $10k-$15k at the most, but as I said, I am just guessing. Marcus made a post on here a couple weeks ago saying they were about $500k-$1M short of overall NIL goals, and about $100k short of their goal for the transfer portal, specifically.

2-Also according to Marcus, if we made up that $500k-$1M shortfall, it would put us in the top 4 of FCS and competing favorably with Mountain West schools.

3-I imagine this is worked out with the NIL in conjunction with the businesses/people paying. Remember, that in order for the player to receive the money, they have to provide something for the person/business/collective paying. That can be (as the name suggests) their name, image, or likeness to be used for promotion, events, advertisements, etc. Players are not allowed to receive money for simply playing.

4-I covered this a little in #2, but yes, the top of FCS is on par with many (but definitely not all) G5 FBS teams.

If you're wondering, I do not know if MSU is in the top 4 of NIL for FCS, but I imagine NDSU and SDSU definitely are.

That information helps. Are Griz basketball players receiving NIL money? Track, golf or tennis?
Griz Basketball, yes definitely.

For the other sports, it depends on how much money/how many people are donating to the general fund, or specifically to those sports. If there are people doing that, then they are also getting NIL money.

Again, just guessing here, but I would imagine most sports are getting NIL, but the amounts pale in comparison to the cash going directly to football (and probably to a lesser extent, basketball).

A weird bit of Griz NIL trivia is that the soccer team was the first to have an NIL agreement for every single player. Great support for the ladies and has helped with recruiting tremendously!

Oh that's right, I remember seeing that! Would love to see all of our sports teams get a decent amount of NIL, not just the big 3.

This sounds high. I recall Colter saying the rumor was Bergen got somewhere between $60-$100k and I’d have to assume he’s the highest in the program.

That certainly makes sense. I’ve seen/heard that $200k number around a bit, but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not accurate.

More from CBS’ John Talty and Chris Hummer on this year’s NIL market, as they note offensive linemen are experiencing the biggest non-QB position spike. “One agent who represents a large number of portal players threw this out when asked about the contract that surprised him the most: ‘Offensive tackles are getting crazy money. A backup is $200,000-$400,000 a year. One of our guys got $350,000, and he's a swing guy.’” Starters at tackle are “easily at $500,000-plus with the top end of the market pushing seven figures.” Meanwhile, an ACC director of player personnel says: "It's just gone up a sh-t ton, to be honest. It doesn't matter what position. O-line is up. Receivers are up. Running backs up. Tight ends up. Edge is about how it was. Inside backer is up. DBs are all up. Specialists are fu***** up by a s*** ton as well. It's now like $150,000 for the good ones." Opendorse Founder Blake Lawrence confirms that he's seen a spike across the board in the Opendorse data. Whether teams have 30% more, as one Big Ten GM estimated, or 100% more to spend, they're spending. "If a budget is increasing by (two times) across the whole team but a position group is increasing by (five times), offensive lineman is an example of that, wide receiver is an example of that. The market is getting better for wide receivers. The defensive line is another one, like you're seeing the average defensive lineman is getting six figures across the entire roster." Talty and Hummer note that “no team better represents the offseason spike than Texas Tech. “NIL is playing a large role in their success. Northern Illinois DT Skyler Gill-Howard, the No. 174 overall prospect in the portal, commanded "one of the largest deals in portal history" for an interior lineman. The ACC DPP: "They're running up the market for everyone. It's insane. It's premium on premium."
