Build the Lines

The OLine was a point of emphasis for transfers and recruiting. Big guys on the D Line have been a………swing and miss. 3-3-5 obviously doesn’t work. Small defensive front is situational (speed pass rush). Why can’t we copy the NDSU & SDSU blueprint? South Dakota did. The cats did. What exactly are we waiting for? Given what the University of Montana and Missoula offers, we should be dominating year after year. That honor is going to…Fargo??? Fargo fucking North Dakota. Are you shitting me? Hauck 2.0 has had 1 great team. A whole lot of average. Lacks size on the defensive front every year. I’m tired of complaining and mediocre football teams. What can we do to improve this program?

You hit the nail on the head, 1984: Junk the 3-3-5 !!! There is a reason that there is a dearth of successful college and pro teams that use it: it doesn't work !!! The 3-3-5 is a highly complex defense and as veteran NDSU QB Cam Miller noted two years ago when we visited Fargo in the 2022 playoffs, the Bison knew if they kept pounding the rock between the tackles, sooner or later, NDSU backs would catch us in all of these exotic shifts, stunts, stems, twists and blitzes that Tommy Mellott described as an " unorthodox front " with nothing but green grass in front of them and The Bison did, running us over in the second half with 3 or 4 long TD runs. When TCU, using the 3-3-5, played Georgia for the 2023 FBS National Championship, The Dawgs crushed The Horned Frogs 65-7, the most lopsided loss in FBS bowl history !!!

We have some huge 6-5 to 6-7, 300 lb. + , young, talented O linemen coming into Missoula in this year's class, we have a talented and stout ( 6-1, 212) backup USC QB and former high school All-State Calif. QB coming in Jensen, and now a tall 6-3, speedy WR transferring from CFP bound ASU in Corbin. Now we just need to fix our D and return to the base 4-3-4 defense under which we won 2 NC's and recruit some big 280-300 lb. DT's. If we could recruit these big, mobile DT's 25 years ago, like Brian Toone, Randy Riley, and Kelly Bryant BP ( Before Portal ) and more recently Alex Gubner AP ( After Portal ), we can do it again, just like NDSU, SDSU, USD snd MSU are currently doing !!!

Very well put!

That’s a great question. I’ve been to Fargo and it’s a vanilla cookie cutter dump of a place. Iraq has more to offer than Fargo. But the program gets great kids. Not sure how they convince any kid to go there other than they can prove they can develop them into something special. Their track record the last 10 years of turning out pro players is impressive. Maybe that’s the key.

Their player development is incredible. It would be nice for our next coaching hire to have NDSU connections so we can develop The Griz into a powerhouse where we belong.

Every team in the country wants big, dominant linemen so you're not going to find those guys in the portal, you have to develop them. If a team is failing to develop linemen you need to take a look at the position coaches, obviously, but perhaps more importantly, the nutrition and strength & conditioning programs.

What leads any of you to believe that this iteration of Bobby is capable of developing consistently dominant play on the lines?

I'm open to convincing, but there is a dearth of evidence that this is a realistic outcome.

What did MIller and Mellott have to say in 2023? What did Udub have to say after scoring 6 against us in 2021?

...just maybe in 2024 teams caught on to the bag of tricks...sooner or later coach's
catch on ...like they did with Stitt's bag of tricks...NDSU,SDSU,MSU play the fundamental
football and win , the machine keeps running no matter who's coaching....this is interesting
to me...year after year they just keep re-loading... why the Griz just keep hoping they can
somehow get the right guys in the portal to fill the gaps....maybe its the program being run
that's putting them out and not necessary the players ..Hauck inherited it in early 2000 and
Griz kept it rolling...now we all wonder who the next man up is...and what kind of season it
will be...we all get excited with the new recruits coming from the portal only to be disappointed
when the team just doesn't pan out...we all like the new shiny objects...

...first year Cignetti of Indiana formally JMU coach who man handle the Griz in the playoffs
a couple of years ago just seems to keep producing winning teams ...there has to be some
formula that keeps them re-loading year after year...player after player...player development?
..coaching style? ..makes you wonder.

Good post 406

What did SDSU, Weber, Eastern, MSU, and North Dakota have to say this year ?

The blatant problem with asking what did NDSU's Cam Miller say last year after losing to us in the playoffs, a lousy UDUB team that saw their HC get fired after losing to us and a 4-8 season in 2021, and what did Tommy Mellott have to say in after we whipped his Shi##y Kitties is all three years is we had Alex Gubner, Braxton Hill, and/or Riley Wilson during those three years.

Last I checked, Gubner and Hill graduated last year and Riley Wilson couldn't do it all by himself with help from Harris this year.and has transferred out.

And even with Gubner, Hill, Harris and Wilson, what did SDSU, Gronkowski and Coach Rogers say last year in the NC, and again this year after beating us and our 3-3-5 both years, this year obviously minus Gubner and Hill ? What did Tommy Mellott say after carving up our 3-3-5 this year, post Gubner and Hill ?

The 3-3-5 seems to be a real dud, but go ahead and list all of the teams, college and NFL, that have won a championship playing the 3-3-5--it's a really short list !!!

It’s easy. They go to Minnesota. Nebraska Iowa and say “hey kid. You should be getting Big10 offers…how about you come to Fargo for 4-5 years. Well make you strong as shit. And by the time
You’re a sophomore you’ll be playing a ton and be playing in the national title every year”.

That sounds pretty good. All for the most part within a 3-5 hour drive from home.

That's a pretty strong argument.

Almost everything. Great program. Great coaching staff. Lots of connections to the NFL in the coaching staff. Very good at recruiting. Recruiting being broadened. Have generally been successful in the Portal. Program was built up in several years from No. 33 in nation in polls, and 2 years not in playoffs. The number of approaches Hauck still gets, some with 7 figure offers. I suppose you will start citing low conference rank. Ha.
