The Coaching Carousel

Rumor has it Brent Vigen has been offered the job at Washington State. The cats provided him with a counter offer but they can’t match Wazzu’s offer and he is now weighing his options. Be interesting to see what he decides.

If this is true then he will be gone. However it smells like BS. After the Paul Wulff failure, WSU and it's alum and donars were soured on hiring out of the BSC or even FCS for their head coach. But I suppose we'll see.

Maybe when they were in with the big dogs but now being in a glorified group of 5 or whatever we will call it, I think they will probably change their perspective on a lot of things.

Well with the current state of Wazzu, that might be their only option. Plus Vigen looks much more attractive than Paul Wulff did at the time.

Different situation now. WSU is actually trying to internally reduce scholarships rather than going to the new 105 limit because they are hemorrhaging money in the athletic department. There are comments by Alex Brink in a 247Sports article deeply criticizing this. WSU doesn’t have a lot of money to throw around for a new coach after Dickert left for Wake Forest, a bottom tier ACC team. WSU also can’t keep players. It’s a very sad situation and would be a tough challenge for any new coach. More money and cheaper place to live might be the deciding factor.

Paul Wulff was a three time BSC coach of the year at EWU. He had far less resources at Eastern and arguably did more than Vigan has so far to this point.
I'm not saying Vigan would be a bad hire or that he hasn't been offered the job but I'm skeptical. If he has he'd be foolish not to take it.

The latest Washington State coaching hot board was released today, and something interesting caught my eye:

Bobby Hauck
CURRENT ROLE: Montana head coach

WHY HE ADDS UP: Hauck has made inquiries about the WSU job, sources tell CF.C. And he has done nothing but win at Montana. Over two stints in Missoula, he is 138-41 with 12 FCS playoff appearances and three trips to the title game, albeit all losses. Hauck has never had a losing record at Montana and at 60 years old, he may view WSU as the last stop of his career.

DOWNSIDE: Hauck gave FBS football head coaching a shot and it did not go well. He was 15-49 in five years at UNLV. Round two could go differently, but the body of work for Hauck at the FBS level might be seen as a red flag to the decision-makers at Washington State here in 2024.

He’s at the very bottom of the board but I found it interesting that he’s inquired. Makes you wonder why he would reach out to them.

That is surprising.

I don’t know if that’s true.

Doesn't seem surprising to me. He can see the direction and dumpster fire currently at the UM and if he could get a much better paying gig before retiring who wouldn't do that.
Do not fear Hauck lovers, there is no frickin' way they would hire him.
You mean the dumpster fire that he created this year?

might want to jump before things really regress and knows he just isn't cutting it like he thought he would coming back

If he can't make it work here, what would make anyone think he can make it work somewhere else?
I doubt others will think it....but he might want the money and not have to face the fact he might have come back to ultimately be fired. That would be tough on his ego . There was one reason he got this job the second time after a horrible stint at UNLV, important money guys thought he would waltz back in and pick off where he left off. Thing is they didn't factor in well he was handed a Cadillac last time that self filled with talent and almost all top Montana kids were going to UM and not MSU due to them being so bad and didn't need to build his own program while MSU kicks his butt in recruiting . Haslam had no choice despite the horrible UNLV record as it was set up from day one by his buddies from 1.0 season. Any other coach with that UNLV record would not even have received an interview . 4 of his 5 seasons at UNLV he won 2 games...yes 2 games

Why did San Diego St try to get him several years ago?
