Marshall and the portal

I wondered why a guy would move horizontally, going from “first to worse” … Sun Belt Champion Marshall to Southern Miss, which won only one game this season, and that was against an FCS opponent. He has an impressive coaching resume, but his only Mississippi link was a year as running backs coach at Mississippi State. He will make more money at Southern Miss, but not all that much. So what gives?

Details are sparse, but his departure was described as a “mutual” decision. (Yeah, right.) His contract was to run out in about six weeks. He seems to have expected an extension (and probably a raise) … which was reasonable, given the team’s success. Instead, the admin decided they wanted to “go in another direction.” Although they have already hired a replacement, they’re likely to regret that decision. (Wonder what alum/big donor Huff pissed off.)

Tell them we’ll play. That would be awesome!

On second thought, Our fans wouldn’t want to watch the team play in some meaningless bowl game.

Not for the players. They are finally getting their share with nil and the portal.
It's swung from one extreme to the other, becoming a crazy free-for-all where players can transfer as much as they want and get paid as much as someone is willing to pay them. Some sort of limit to the amount of transfers as well as the dollar amount for NIL would probably have been a very good thing. But that ship has sailed now.

Interesting how the press emphasizes the fact that Marshall is not in the independence bowl rather than tell the story about their team entering the portal. Maybe because it's on ESPN and they will loose viewers which will cost them $$$$$

The free market is always a free for all. Why would you limit the opportunities of the student athletes?
