GFP season wrap up pod

This week's GFP dropped in the middle of the night, it's live right now! We give some time to discuss the SDSU loss and then broaden our conversation and reflect upon the season as a whole. Montana has some bright spots in the years ahead, and immediate challenges they need to meet. It's a long pod, yes, but it's a pretty detailed one with over 65 fan questions to get to. Over this season we've heard so much from fans and even families of players that this pod is a great connection to Montana, and it's been a blast to do. We're planning to keep some off-season content rolling as well - so don't worry guys, the GFP will be heard from again plenty of times this spring and summer!

After last years run and pods into January, feels like we’re getting shorted this year. 😉

Thankful that you guys do this week in and week out. It’s a big commitments even if it’s drinking with friends. I know even as a listener with no kids listening to it takes me several days. I know you guys are busy and have lives and families, but really glad you guys share this with us. It really is a fun connection to the griz community.

Our plan is drop a few monthly over the winter and spring months. Probably will be shorter pods since we'll have less to bitch about haha. We're working on equipment upgrades and want to do a few fun pods where maybe we watch a classic Griz game, someone suggested one of having James and his buddies do one, we also have some people that wanted to be guests that we could circle back to.

Thanks for this. I too was pissed. This type of thing cannot be justified by any Bobby fanboy. Haslam do your job and tell him this is flat out an embarrassment to the university and evidence to why MSU has turned Bobby’s program into the little brother.

Something we wanted to clip and share:

1) Really offended you robbed everyone of a strong F bomb from Mike at the end there.

2) I will never understand why Bobby Hauck cannot understand that he would be not only more well liked, but also more successful if he would just walk up to the podium and be the same person he is in private and at QB club meetings. It isn't as if he is unable to be charismatic and likeable. It is an active choice he makes with his public face and I just do not understand it at all. There is no reason to just avoid having a press conference and putting his best face on it. Mike is right.

Wanted to edit it... for the kids haha

I feel like this is a Seth Bodnar call to action, rather than Kent Haslem. The football program truly is the front porch of the institution. Haslem is as much a part of the blind spot as Hauck, IMO.

Haslem is part of the problem too. Both our football and basketball programs have declined under his watch. When he took over we were regularly winning the conference in basketball and getting 13 and 14 seeds in the dance.

I was so ready to defend the coaches in whatever this was about to discuss, but you are 100% correct. I coached college ball for 28 years and never once did our head man not have a press conference or even a banquet in some cases to talk about recruiting classes.

Couple other interesting tid bits that are curious to me now that you got me thinking. 1. Have you seen the guardian caps that teams use? Personally, I dont see much benefit in them but not a single UM player has them. Just knowing Bobby, and I actually somewhat respect that he sticks to his guns, I would think he would think they are stupid, which again may not be wrong. But every other college team that I’ve ever seen wears them. MSU wears them. Maybe they suck. WITH THAT BEING SAID, mothers might not think so. If im a coach at msu, im telling every recruit we wear them for their sons’ safety and that UM doesn’t wear them.

Another thing, were you aware there was no post-season banquet? That’s another thing that was incredible to me. These seniors deserve that. MSU had a banquet. I don’t know I’ve been drinking a bit, and I always defend the coaches, but some curios things to me to say the least.

The conversation about the lack of success with recruiting classes was spot on. I would like to see the comparison with MSU and the Dakota schools.

All seem so damn obvious as what a coach should do. Hell Vigen figured it out and makes Bobby look like an ass. Only reason I can imagine it is just another “I’m Bobby Hauck I do what I want “ and Haslam and Bodner are okay with it since checks are cashing

Do we know that they didn't or won't have an awards banquet? I thought they had always done that.

I'm with you on the rest, though. And I think studies are showing that the guardian caps reduce the impact by up to 20%, which would help eliminate a lot of the sub-concussive impacts that contribute to long term brain issues. A lot of people just focus on concussions, but those sub concussive impacts are doing long term damage without being enough of a short term "oh shit" moment to get players to go sit out for the rest of the day.

Every team should be using the caps, in my opinion, but I'd also require them for all players in all games so I am clearly out of line with where the current common sense is on the matter.

The conversation about the % of recruits that eventually play and then become all conference are 2 differnt things. The % that actually play is going to be similar through out college football. That part is just math. Everyone who plays on the team was recruited so the % would only change based on the depth/playing time of individual players.

Now, recruiting all conference players is different and you eventually get to the obvious conclusion: Teams with the best players win the most. The best players will come from good recruiting and good development. Hardly earth shattering conclusion on the podcast.
