Post season: Unable to find the magic

I’ve mentioned this for a couple years, but when you look at the on field disparity between the top teams, and then look at pro day results, there is a strength and conditioning problem. Not enough elite FCS athleticism, not enough elite FCS strength. I forget if it was last year or two years ago, but one of the kickers arguably tested out the best of everybody. That’s…bad.

Now, I don’t know if this is solely a S&C problem or also a recruiting problem. You can only do so much with what you’re given. So what I’m saying is that I don’t know exactly what the cause is, but I do know that it’s a problem. Guys like Bergen, Gilman, maybe even Casey should test well, but I would’ve thought Gubner would’ve tested very good too.

I’m with you here PT. I think the S&T aspect of this team, how they train / lift / eat / recover needs some examining. I think we’re 4+ years into the same S&T staff/system and in games like yesterday our lines sure appeared to be out-muscled. How does that happen? Is there something we can pick up from what the Dakota schools are doing?

No college football team @ the FCS or FBS level has won a NC playing the 3-3-5 that I am aware of, and no NFL team that I am aware of plays the 3-3-5 much less has won a Super Bowl playing the 3-3-5. When we won our 2 . NC's under GRIZ DC's Jerome Souers ( 95) and Mike Breske ( '01), we played a base 4-3-4 defense.

We need to sh#tcan the 3-3-5 !!!
Yes, we should definitely stick with defenses from 30 years ago because nothing has changed in offenses since that time.
I’m certainly no fan of the 3-3-5 but TCU ran it when they went to the national championship for the 2022 season and we had a pretty good season running it last year.
I would like to see us go to a 4-2-5 with a few bigger interior d-linemen.
I believe the 4-3 is a thing of the past that is slowly dying

Two things I’ll say. For starters, I don’t expect our Defense to be this bad next year. If there is one thing that Bobby has always prided himself on it’s playing good defense, and during his 2 stints this is definitely the worst defense he’s had. And I can assure you based on things he has said quietly that he was not pleased about the way this defense performed this year. I promise he will not let this continue. I suspect they won’t go too hard in the portal on defense this year like they did last year as I think a lot of those younger guys are ready now. There will be a couple spots they’ll have to address in the portal, but they won’t overhaul it like they did this year. That strategy obviously did not pay off and I bet they learned their lesson.

Offensively, the biggest issue was QB. I think we’re all of the belief that Huot and Fife are on their way out. We’ll see about Ah Yat, but I think he’ll be back. That’s gonna open up 2 spots in the QB room. They need to go find 2 guys like Cliff. I think that’s the style of QB that works for this system and scheme. There’s a couple guys in the portal already that kind of fit that mold and more to come. Go get them. As for OL, I believe they’ll improve under Pawlak. He got here late last year, I think like early February after the portal was already closed. No time really to get any guys that he likes. We got 3 starters back next year and I really like Freitas as well. Give Pawlak time to keep working with them and for anyone he doesn’t like, I’m sure he will go find guys that he likes now that he has time.

Essentially, we have an entire offseason to fix the glaring issues from this season. Let’s see how it all plays out. Things will change and turnover is a given in College Football, and sometimes it’s for the best. Let’s all just see how things go in the next couple months.

There is not a person on the team that could play nose in our current defense. Outside of Wilson, our linebackers are slow and the secondary is horrendous.

If I’m being honest, things feel pretty hopeless right now. Insurmountable problems in recruiting as well as on offense and defense that seem likely to require substantive coaching changes to fix. I’m just not sure how you fix the oline, dline, qb problems etc…..all in an offseason. They’d have to hit it out of the park in the portal and land a stud new OC and DC to fix this mess IMO

Don't agree on the 4-3-4, Rob--most college and pro teams still play it and the 4-2-5 is just a variant for a pass-happy offense--drop a LB and play nickel.

TCU did play the 3-3-5 and used it on their way to The Big XII Championship in 2022.

But in the 2023 NC game against Georgia, they were run over, losing 65-7, the biggest loss ever in a FBS bowl game !!!

Actually the base 4-2-5 is a derivative of the old 4-4 and there are several pro teams and a ton of college teams playing it now. It is not the same defense as the base 4-3 where you remove a linebacker and put a nickel in his place on passing downs
I believe I said I wasn’t a fan of the 3-3-5 just for the reason you mentioned. I was just pointing out that teams can and do win with it but It’s hot garbage as far as I’m concerned.

Changing the OC & DC doesn’t solve anything. The main problems are lack of talent (recruiting) and philosophy. All of that is Hauck’s deal. If you actually want change, you have to want Hauck gone.

Is it different than most felt after the '22 season? Griz bounced back pretty fast with a lot of question marks then as well.

But the fact we've felt this way collectively 2 out of the last 3 seasons is indicative of a major problem in my opinion.

And the reality is that last season was an outlier in Hauck 2.0's resume. Most seasons have been lackluster if we are being honest with ourselves.

We simply have not been serious contenders for the Natty for the vast majority of Hauck's current tenure.

Had a great season his contract year and this season he decided to mail it in.
