New NCAA Football Scholarship Limits

Probably NDSU.

How many football recruits make decisions on the quality and size of the stadium?
Griz have larger attendance and more FCS playoff appearances because NDSU is relatively new to this level and were D2 25 years ago. Missoula is also beautiful the campus should be able to sell itself.

So, the HS QBs who might have gone to those programs could fall to FCS.
I think this ends up happening, and not just with QBs.

FCS and non professional FBS programs will become feeder programs like how Juco pretty much is now. IMO it makes sense to just merge FCS and the non professional FBS programs into one division in the long run.

Why do you think it would make sense to merge non-prof FBS and FCS? Don’t most in those categories operate are very different athletic department budget levels? Different scholarship numbers, different coaching levels? Different NIL levels.

NDSU has way more playoff wins.

I really appreciate your perspective, and you’re most likely correct. It probably won’t be just QBs. It will be very interesting to see what transpires.

I just think the costs are going to get to a point where the non-professional programs either need a way to contain their costs or start dropping programs. In theory FCS is meant to cut costs associated with running a football program, though back when it was devised (I could be wrong here) the main cost was scholarships. Not the arms race for facilities, coaching salaries, various non-coaching staffs that support the programs, etc. that we have today.

That said, such a merger would require a rethink to how FCS is approached, with mechanisms in place to contain the runaway NIL train. I can't pretend to know what the answers are, but I am fully convinced the real divide soon will be between the well-funded NIL programs and those that aren't regardless of FCS or FBS classification.

Thanks. I think there are and will be more than one divide. I can't imagine most FCS schools being able to afford to play in the bottom half of FBS, as many/most of those schools have much higher budgets and way more NIL. However, I think some of the FCS schools are closer to the bottom half FBS schools in terms of competitive football quality at this point.

My thing, that the bottom half of FBS is going to have a reconning at some point trying to keep up with nil.

Students aren't going to have an appetite for paying student fees when the athletes are profiting, and it'll be make for some interesting conversations when public tax dollars are subsidizing programs that are paying players.

FCS programs by en large operate in a shoestring budget. It's gonna be painful for FBS programs that will have to difficult budgetary decisions.

Buuuuut I could also be way wrong.

I don’t think their fans will give up what they have now, and how would any school get away from NIL? Even at FCS, NIL is increasing.

What are the chances that the FCS turns into a true farm system for the FBS, kind like minor league baseball.

Example: Ohio State contacts Youngstown State and says, we will send you 20-30 players more or less to develop with real game time experience and when they're ready they'll come back to OSU to complete their eligibility.

This possibly would make YSU a stronger FCS program with top recruits and OSU can see how the players develop and will not have to ride the pine until it their turn to see the field.

Because players have more freedom. None of those 20-30 players have to agree, and could go anywhere. That freedom is not something the players would give away.

I've never heard of an idea anything like this. I doubt anyone has been saying something similar for 2+ years. ;)

100% true, but the open farm system at the FCS level where the staff has multiple connections with FBS staffs could be a great selling point. More like a JC than minor league baseball.

Especially if them start using the same schemes and systems to develop the players.

FCS teams are going to have the ability to get good quick... who the best talent evaluators are and who has some resources to put into it can change their fortunes quickly going into next season. Do the Griz have the coaches in place who can thrive in this new era of roster management?
Hah! Well that eliminates UM. They get talent but have no clue how to develop it anymore
