The Coaching Carousel

I keep hearing from bobcat fans about how Vigan won't leave MSU because his kids are there and that it would take a really great opportunity to lure him away. That is laughable considering pretty much any FBS opportunity would triple his salary. If Fresno State offers he's gone in a heartbeat.
College landscape has changed quite a bit. And I think it’s pretty well understood now that if you get the opportunity to take a HC job. You take it. You never know when you’ll get offered multi mil again.

Things are about to get really interesting at Utah State. Jay Hill withdrew his name from consideration last night after receiving a sizeable raise from BYU. Mendenhall has also elected to stay put at New Mexico. This very well could put Vigen and Eck in play for USU now. Former Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin may also be in play too.

LOL on Harsin. USU would be doing all of the conference mates a favor with that hire.

This would be a good time for him to leave. I.e. during the playoffs.
Probably the third best time he could leave after the week before GrizCat and the start of the season sucks to be a stepping stone program but what do you expect with a stadium that looks like a lego set?

Do you think UM isn’t a stepping stone program?

depends on what is being stepped into? former head coaches, at least in the last 30 years or so, haven't had great success stepping up.

unless i'm wrong?
FBS and FCS are different animals it is going to be an even bigger difference with FBS eliminating walk ons. The FCS needs to use walk ons and partial scholarships for most of the roster so there is a lot more going off of potential because someone who has the option based on already being a top player nationally will follow the money to the FBS.

Hauck has already had had offers to move on, but he wants to finish at UM.
Never say never if the perfect opportunity came along say making 10x as much and 10x larger salary for his staff at a big brand he has history at like if Prime leaves CU but very unlikely.

I doubt BH goes anywhere else on his own terms already been there and tried that. He is a good fit for what Montana needs.
Hauck is a bit of an anomaly, but if UM had a coach that was consistently finishing at the top of the conference, that coach will not be here for long.

I’m saying this while realizing that exceptions always exist, but no very good coach is going to want to stay in the FCS forever. They’ll be looking to move on, get paid more, etc. Calling UM a stepping stone program isn’t an insult, it’s just a reality of what being an FCS program is.

To have a great coach at the FCS level it either needs to be someone early in their career like Vigen that you risk leaving for the FBS or someone at the tail end of their career like BH and Delaney that also come with the risk of retirement or not relating to the current players but not leaving for an FBS opportunity. Great college coaches are already in the FBS in the middle of their career.

Delaney was not a great coach.
