Davis is very good, they played very well, and they thumped us (especially later in the game)

I just literally watched it again, and they did indeed get it without aid of the penalty.

We played it safe and gave them the substitution error....just in case!

Okay, I thought Davis had clearly gotten the first down. Here's the play by play. It was 4th and 2 and the runner got 2 yards, so couldn't have been 2 yards short. Thx.

Interesting. From where I was sitting, the refs spotted the ball about 1.5 yards short of the first down marker. They must have just been placing the ball there waiting for the penalty. I also thought I saw a couple defenders excited about the stop. Thanks for sharing play by play and UC Davis coaches opinion.

Edit, the first down chains must have been waiting for where to place LOS. I heard whistle and assumed forward progress was stopped (I was looking at south end zone ref that threw the flag) and must have missed the Davis RB powering forward past contact for a first down.

They didn't have to get it. The UM coaches showed their incompetence by having 12 players on the field.

Yes, but they did get the first down, so the penalty had nothing to do with the first down. With 11 or 10 players on the field, Davis would have gotten the first down.
