Why Griz fell behind NDSU

I wonder if people who think MSU is some world class engineering institution have ever left the state.
Last I saw, UM was a higher ranked university anyway. Not that I'm crowing about that, as I recognize UM isn't exactly a nationally recognized university.

In this day and age HS kids are becoming more chosey about what they major in. There has been a lot of attention paid to whether or not it's worth getting a college education considering the price and time commitment. The liberal arts schools such as Montana have fallen a bit out of favor, right or wrong. Let's face it, engineering provides by far the best bang for the buck for the students financial success and kids know that. Isn't it odd that UM is the only school in the BSC that doesn't offer a degree in an ABET accredited engineering program? I understand that very few college football players have the academic fortitude to complete a BS in engineering but many want to at least try. I think currently that is hurting the UM's recruiting.
No it isn’t surprising considering the way the MUS/BOR has what school can offer which programs.

I would hate this so much. I already hate it enough that he's an assistant coach there.

Just to touch on the recruiting advantages. Your stadium is an advantage. After that what sets you apart more? The champions center? It's often pointed to but yet MSU has something similar. Has anyone been in MSU's BAC to say the CC is leaps and bounds better? Or is that just assumption. The BAC is newer by only a few years so one would assume it's got more up to date amenities. From the outside...they're both just buildings with 4 walls. I went to the Snow Globe game in Missoula and honestly was a little underwhelmed from the outside. I thought it was going to be some cool building from the outside. But it was 4 walls. As was I underwhelmed from the outside of the BAC. But its the inside that counts and I have seen neither on the inside.

The indoor practice facility is great. Longtime coming. But the Dakotas all have more expensive and one would assume pretty nice inside. MSU is right behind but almost there.

Airport to have parents get to games? Fargo and then who's next? Not Brookings. Bozeman is the busiest airport in MT but it's not like Missoula doesn't have a lot of flights.

NIL. You were kind of late to the game. 20 years ago you wouldn't have been. And the school can't be blamed for that. That's all on the fans and boosters to get that started.

Competing year in and year out. It always felt like with 1.0 the griz got to the natty and didn't compete. Like there was never a question of who was going to win the games after a couple quarters. But i could be misrememebering. I just seem to rememeber them not being so competititve. Who's was that kid that played D line at Richmand when you played them? Kid was a stud!

What other facilities? UM has had a parking garage for some time. I've heard Choate used to take recruits to the new dining hall to end tours and say this is where you get to eat, because it's supposed to be pretty sweet there. You just built a new dining hall. Business may be rated higher but have you seen Jake Jabs hall? Pretty sweet. Though let's be honest, most people start school with one degree in mind and then switch to business. They didn't choose a school based on the business program. UM just built their first new dorm in how many years? MSU has at least 3 in the kast 10 years. I have no idea about the Dakotas on any of this stuff, which is why I haven't brought them up. My point isn't to compare and contrast the 2 MT schools.

So at the end of the day the stadium is what you have noone else has. And a foot bridge. Which you can't discount. I always tell people going to their first game you have to park over on the Press Box side so you can make the walk in over the bridge. If I was in charge of game day visits, I would absolutely make sure parents walked in before the game over that bridge with the crowd of people. It's special. Oh and you had a Hooters. That was a distinct advantage over everyone! But it's no longer.... so sad.

Elrod, always enjoy your thoughts. Great posts on this thread. Really enjoyed the messages back and forth from the off season. I'm hoping to make it to a game and I'll make sure I look you up if I do.

GinWA, I assume you're going to type some reply about how dumb I am to think any of that. It won't be so much about what I posted but an attack on my intellect. And you'll call me a bub because that's your old tired retort. It's kind of like you're still stuck on your own 1.0. You haven't come up with a 2.0 come back so you're just not in the game like you used to. 😉

And PR, no I did not play the game. Just to get that out there. But I would love to be invited to the lake!
I hate to break it to you, but Roger taking over for Hauck someday sure seems to be the plan. He’s a super impressive guy who has had elevated responsibilities every year on the staff. He’s next

As Elrod said, Missoula is far from the best recruiting grounds, Missoula has a northern climate (and many recruits are from southern climates), Missoula does not have a lot of diversity (Blacks), UM has had more academic integrity than some schools that UM competes with, after Pflu UM was no longer at or near the top in most years, UM did not have an indoor practice facility, UM didn't have even a credible weight room until more recent years, some parents generally have to fly along way to get to Missoula, UM doesn't have cost of living stipends, and, now, UM doesn't have big NIL. Perhaps there are other reasons.

On the positive side, UM has a great stadium, attendance and atmosphere, a great tradition of success that has now come back, very good coaches, a nice town, and a good group of players. Again, perhaps more.

There are various reasons UM probably can't be a top team every year. Injuries, coaching changes, and competing schools that have many or more of the recruiting advantages than UM does. JMU certainly had very good advantages. Many schools are in the heart of good recruiting territory. Almost no school is on or near the top every year. Was NDSU there last year, in your view? MSU certainly wasn't. Very few schools have been at or near the top every year, except the Dakota schools and maybe UM for awhile, except for several streaks of varying lengths.

Being realistic shouldn't be confused with low expectations. The expectations of the program are very high. I'm not so sure high expectations of fans make things better or help; sometimes they make things worse. Especially, unreleastic fans and expectations.

Griz now have an indoor practice facility. Exceptional athletic facilities, fan base and stadium. They have an advantage over the majority of FCS teams. They just do and that really isn’t debatable. Academics - fine or above par. I am not buying the argument on minorities being few and far between. Griz should be top four every year. Of course losing in the playoffs happens. The last seven years has been an under achievement. One BSC conference title and one natty appearance. Hauck didn’t have a lot to work with when he came back. Give him four years to turn it around. Fair enough. This year is going to say a lot about his overall performance. Win the brawl, BSC and make a deep playoff run - he has done a solid job. Lose the brawl and not go deep into the playoffs isn’t meeting expectations.

And would be time for you to get realistic expectations or find a new team follow. With posts like this, in sometimes wonder who people think they are. Or maybe you are talking about some fans’ expectations and not yours. Not trying to offend you.

Nothing to be offended about. I don’t wrap my identity or ego in being a fan of the Griz. Been a fan long before I attended the U of M. I don’t label or tell other people how good or “bad” a fan they are. I just call it like I see it. It may irritate some people, but I figure I am on a fan board and that is kind of the purpose of the forums. I also don’t worry too much about comments on coaching performance. The coaches are state employees with excellent retirement packages and a pretty decent salary. If I have ever crossed a line it would be making comments about a player. That would be something stupid I would have done in the heat of the moment. Still not acceptable and I try and behave myself there. Not trying to make friends or be popular on the board. I do enjoy the football discussions and others take on situations. Cool if people don’t agree with me.

Gross. The defense as whole and especially the linebackers have not been impressive at all this year. And why do we continually have to do inside hires? This nativist approach to hiring is so tired. Its like people have so much PTSD over Stitt that they can't comprehend that its a big world out there and there's talent outside of UM.

When Bobby leaves, it would be a colossal mistake not to do a thorough coaching search.

It’s often not possible to do a big coaching search. Takes too long. Other schools immediately hit on good players, and they get good or great offers and leave. New coach decisions need to be made quickly in this new age. It’s even worse for basketball n

You know nothing about linebacker play.

I judge posters and people as being good and bad fans. Bad fans irk me. My view is that bad fans shouldn’t post or be allowed to post. It’s a message board. I get to say what I want. You are not a bad fan.

So now it's not possible to do a big coaching search? Hilariously retarded to the point of ridiculousness. You honestly couldn't come up with anything more cogent than that? The AARP is calling, they want to remind you to take your dementia meds.

If we aren't capable of doing a proper coaching search with properly vetted outside candidates with some sense of urgency, then what kind of monkey dick, dime store program are we running here?

Yeah you're right bud- this LB unit is a real powerhouse. We're the 70th ranked defense in the country for a reason, Ray Charles has seen better linebackers.

I see you’re back on roids again. Give us some recent examples of big national searches done by good or top programs. AD’s now have to have new possible coaches in their back pockets. The LB’s aren’t giving up the long plays and TD’s. Do you even watch the games? Our top 3 tacklers are backers. Terrell is 6th in the conference.

While I agree and I also think we are set for several more years in football anyway, I do think if Bobby decided he wanted to kick back or move on there would be a lot of good coaches beating feet to the AD's door hoping to get a foot in....even before it was announced...
