Why Griz fell behind NDSU

I am sure this has been talked about ad nauseam, but I am generally curious why Montana never turned into a premiere championship team before NDSU? Was the administration at the time not on board with Montana being a big time Football school?

Come on now. It’s football season and we have games to watch and comment on. I am not sure we need to rehash the dark period of UM’s history, Royce and Gwen, Pflu getting thrown under the bus. It really is simply. Took years to build back up. Time we love on and not look backwards. I won’t even discuss the differences in funding and booster presence between the two programs. That is a whole other story and NIL actually leveled the playing field somewhat. Finally, I cannot believe I responded to this troll of a post.

Maybe ndsu has been payin players this whole time.

Honestly, wasn't trying to troll. I am new to the site, so I was just trying to find some information that isn't made available. Probably the wrong time to post. I appreciate the response.

it is a chatroom about griz football , post whatever you want (within reason...). there is nothing wrong with your original post or the timing of it. if somebody doesn't like it, that's their problem.

You're good, its a fair question. Forgive me if I sound like I'm doing some "man-splaining" here, but I'm assuming you are younger and didn't live through what happened in the aughts and early 2010's that led to this.

Many would argue we were well on our way to becoming that kind of dynasty until Krakaur's libelous book and the local media and our own administration aiding him in tearing down a lot of the strong foundation that the U of M had built in enrollment and in football. We had won a couple of national titles and were in back to back championship games. Pflu was, in my opinion, an amazing choice to lead the program at that point and I was really excited about the future.

As many have pointed out, NDSU also had WAY more funding for their football program, got ahead of us in facilities, and has the proximity to Minneapolis' recruiting grounds. They have an absolute shit ton of oil money that poured into the program when the oil boom hit out there.

In 2015 they were also allowed to start paying "full cost of attendance" to their players in a way that the state government in Montana has not, so they were somewhat ahead of the NIL curve and were essentially giving kids an additional $3,400 per semester to cover their transportation and other items while the Montana schools were not allowed to do so.

Lastly, they had some damn fine coaching and institutional support.

That is exactly what I was looking for. I knew a lot of what went down, but wasn't sure about how the administration played into it. I figured this was the best place to look for a little deeper dive.

We had a President at that time who I really liked on a personal level, but he was absolutely conflict avoidant and the absolute worst personality to have in charge when the hounds came barking at the gates of UM. He was very quick to try to get the coach to kick a wrongly accused young man off of the football team, and when the coach still verbally supported the young player, they cleaned house. The administration at the time holds a HUGE part of the blame, in my opinion, for allowing Missoula to be framed the way it was and absolutely destroying our enrollment and reputation.

In the long run, after the player was acquitted and the book had already been a best seller, it turned out that Missoula and the Griz athletic department was not statistically out of line with other colleges our size for legal issues or violent crimes. The book was laughably and offensively allowed to get away with tucking that little nugget into a small paragraph at the end. My blood still boils about that, but it is unforgiveable to me that our own leadership cowered instead of defending our University community and the football program that helped build it.

One of the best posts I have ever read on e-griz.

Why in the hell of all the campuses around the nation he decided to write a book about Missoula and their Football team?

"I don't mean to single out Missoula: Its rape rate is a little less than the national average," Krakauer said

I know this has all been rehashed multiple times throughout the years. I don't want to keep beating a dead horse.

He chose Missoula because we had the name brand value and the charge to the starting QB, and we had an administration that had shown they wanted to hide from the issue and defer and not stand up and defend themselves. He chose to damage a community because it was the way of framing the story in a way that sold books. He chose profit of decency and journalistic integrity. We were a target of opportunity.

I think you meant "he chose profit OVER decency and journalistic integrity".
