Many were weeded out but found success elsewhere. My own gf tried to get through Tech for 5 years. Transferred to MSU, got her degree there with mostly A’s. Lots did it then MSU was easy. In my day professors had to have phD to teach.

Took me 5 years for Environmental Eng at Tech. First day of calc class the prof walks in and drops “I don’t care if you fail my class, I believe it’s my personal responsibility to weed out those of you who are unworthy of being engineers. If I watch the news one evening and hear about a catastrophic bridge failure designed by a Mt Tech grad, who took my course, I don’t think I could live with myself.”
 
I think relying too heavily on the transfer portal can really hurt recruitment of younger players over time. If your being recruited as a freshman out of high school and you work hard, put in the time, lift - do all you need to do to get better and by your junior year you’ve moved up to maybe second on the depth charts and know your going to see the field, that’s pretty exciting. Exciting until a bunch of transfers start coming in and all of a sudden your back to 3rd or 4th. That would suck but it’s what a lot of these kid’s experience. If I was a really good freshman QB being recruited by a team that always brings in transfer QB’s I would think twice about going there. JMO.

By not producing pro caliber players we will not recruit them. Kind of a catch 22.

Montana will never get a prep school QB and that goes for the Cats as well. Not enough money combined with both schools could get a sniff from those caliber of players. They get recruited to these prep academies and they are only thinking big time FBS and NFL. FCS level has to be able to develop and do the best they can to retain.

I believe he was meaning military prep academies. Though I could be wrong.

I've lost a bit of track of the conversation, I'll be honest, but I think the prep/academies got brought into it specifically around the military ones, and everyone has been shorthanding it since then. I don't think anyone thinks we are going to be making trims to IMG and pulling linemen out of there.

God, that's quite the list. Mariani has to be up there, right? I'm sure some would say Biermann. Jimmy Wilson would be an underrated answer. I'd probably go with Tru, but there are a handful of guys that would be a good answer.

In 2.0 Junior would be right up there, with his heroics. Lots of kids on last year's team deserve a lot of credit, but I don't know if they would be at the very top of the list. Its a little hard because with Covid, we are just now getting to senior years with some of Hauck's first class. Gubner, who graduated last year, was a pre-Hauck recruit if my memory is right. Sneed is one of my favorite Griz of all time, but I know that most aren't going to put him at the top of any "greatest griz" list.

Eli Gilman might end up being the right answer when all is said and done.

Ok thank you for the clarification. I was only using the QB as an example. I figured that it would difficult to get any recruits from COLLEGE prep schools but like I said I do not have any knowledge how that works or if we even ever try to recruit there.

Why would their be a lot of names? He asked who were Hauck's best recruits, not for a complete list of good ones.

I don't understand your question about seniors? Bergen is the best senior on the team, in my opinion, and I named him. I don't get what you are trying to argue with.

I'm fine with Hauck. FCS will always have room to rank his teams nationally and get him to Player Rep's beloved playoffs. Isn't it expanded up to 24 teams this year?

I just asked Elrod about Hauck’s best current recruits. He came up with Bergen and Gilman by name. 2 good ones but it wasn't a lot of names. There others I know. I know he also recruits all the Montana kids. But some have suggested his staff's recruiting style may need some work. Maybe they're wrong.

Gilman is an elite talent. If he comes back next here, he will have made a bad career decision. He needs to go the route of Skattebo.

No you didn't. Somebody else asked a question about his best all time recruits, and I thought it was interesting, so I answered with some names. You didn't ask me to name good current Hauck recruits, lol, you just butted in to something else and made a point I still don't really understand.

Hauck 2.0 has had plenty of good guys. It has been re-hashed in many ways that of course we don't have as many guys put into the NFL as in Hauck 1.0, and I'd argue the pipeline was not nearly the same when he came back the second time, but we have had some damn good guys. If you would have asked me the question of "has he recruited anybody good in Hauck 2.0," then that would have been a very different question.

You're taking my answer to an entirely different question, and pretending that it somehow proves that Hauck hasn't been recuiting well in 2.0.

Part of the problem in evaluating it is that because of Covid, we are just NOW getting to Bobby's recruits graduating last year. Even some of those kids weren't recruited by this staff.

Gilman may be the most all around talented running back we have ever had at Montana. Ostmo is going to be high on career rushing yards. Knight holds the single season TD record. Bergen will go down as an all-time Griz great no matter how he finished this year. We have multiple all-big sky linemen since he has been back. Justin Ford was one of my favorite DBs the Griz have ever had. We have had a run of absolute stud linebackers. Ah Yat, Flowers, Sliter, and Huot were all great gets at QB in recent years.

We signed the top rated HS RB to EVER sign with the Griz a couple of years back, and then Gilman was so good that he pushed the guy out.

Hill, Janacaro, O'Connell, Wilson, and a number of other good LBs.

Genatone was a big get that we took from out from under Nebraska's nose. AJ Forbes was a huge get.

Our recruiting has been better than the vast, vast majority of FCS teams.

BTW, did you enjoy the run to the national championship last year? I did. It was great.
 
The staff should look east toward Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, especially for the OL & DL. These boys are just built differently over here. I would say most of them are outdoors types in one way or another. They are either country boys who like to hunt and fish, or the city fellas who like to go boating and such. It's not like they won't come. There are a lot of programs in Ohio, but everyone knows there's really just two programs. Kentucky has two teams then everyone else. I know a lot of these kids would love to get out of here. I mention I am from Montana and it's all questions. Just a thought. I am certain the staff recruits over here, but I would really hit it hard for the Linemen. We have a 6'10 330 kid that plays for Huntington High, granted he is also a Louisville commit, but there are a lot of corn fed fellas around here. I used to think it was just a thing people said. Nooooope. I'm 6'3 310, and the kids on the field make me feel tiny.

New age of College Football... I think we would be happy if Eli were to move on and have success at the FBS level, that bodes well for UM. This will only increase recruiting advantages if we are able to consistently move players to the FBS. Players will notice a trend and see this as a great place to get exposure and good coaching.
