Berman knows about FCS cus he’s an FCS guy. The FCS is not well known to many that have no ties to FCS football. My uneducated guess would put that at probably about 60-70% of the country who have no idea what Montana football or the FCS is all about. I have talked with easily hundreds of college football fans here in Alabama and I have met maybe 10 people who know who Montana is. The maybe 30-40 people who know what FCS is, half of those don’t know the difference between Montana and NDSU. I’ve been asked probably 15 times if montana is the team that’s won all those nattys. Anyone who thinks the FCS is a known appreciated commodity by non FCS affiliated fans is delusional.

Who would think anyone from Alabama would know much about anything? Just kidding. I would guess Alabama is more Alabama country. Berman knowing about FCS and the championship comes from him being a high-powered sports guy. Most people from Brown don’t what football is, let alone FCS. Except Joe Paterno.

Yes, Alabama is definitely all about Alabama/Auburn. In fact, the easiest way to tell if someone is born and raised Alabama or relocated here is to ask them if they have a favorite NFL team. That being said, all the people I have associated with are from Huntsville, home of Alabama A&M. Yes, they are not the best representation of FCS football but everyone in the state knows about the Magic City classic, being that it’s possibly the highest attended football game in the county if you count the couple hundred thousand that show up just for the party. I bring A&M up to the FCS uneducated and they all don’t know that the SWAC is not Div 2. Even after I “educate” them, they still don’t care because there is clearly a “division” gap between FCS and FBS. I know by governing body’s regulation standards, we are Div 1, but the reality of the situation is we are in a lower tier league that nobody outside the FCS fan base cares about. Ultimately it boils down to if we want to remain a big fish in a pond that may not be shrinking, but is clearly losing its top end predators fish, or, if we can afford it, move into a bigger body of water with more room for growth.
