Defense

Here is my take on the defense and what has been going on. A lot of fans who are quick to judge the coaching being bad and they aren't doing this and not doing that and they need to do this. Relax!
The defense will get better. It will but it won't be at a pace some of you want, which is by next week.
A lot of you just look at the numbers and think our defense is horrible. But the numbers don't tell the whole story. Some of you compare how much better we were last year on defense than this year. You're right, we were better last year, but it's not because of the reasons you're thinking.
The reason we were better last year was because our defense had leaders in key positions on defense that grew up in this program and lived the Montana way of football.
Braxton Hill, Levi Janacarro, Nash Fouch and Alex Gubner all grew up in this program and weren't transfer implants. This is huge to have whether on offense or defense. The continuity of playing together for 5 years straight makes a vast difference. They all understood the goals and team values of doing there 1/11 and no one guy is bigger than the team.
This defensive scheme relies heavily on every single person doing there job. All it takes is one person to go off on their own and everyone suffers for it.
Now you come to this year where some key positions were filled with transfers. Whole some of them are talented, the defense as a whole isn't playing as one. A lot of these guys are learning to play alongside one another for the first time. So it's going to take a while for them to get used to each other. But I noticed in the first few weeks, guys weren't doing their assignments and then everyone pays for it. And this is normal when you have guys transferring in, some guys are going to take it upon themselves to try and make the play and want to stand out but that's not how it works in this defense.
Our defense will get better slowly but surely and they are on track. We have 7 games left and it's a good sign that we aren't playing our best football right now because we want to play our best towards the ending of the season headed into playoffs. We want to get better each week and get towards the end. A lot of teams are shooting their loads in the first half of the season and then fall off towards the end.
Our coaches are doing a great job with what they have. Some of you u guys need to just relax
It's a message board. People are free to share their perspectives, whether you like them or not. If players are confused, which they clearly were last Saturday, then the coaches should simplify their approach.

The whole D scheme would have to change significantly to simply very much of it. It's built on things like this: lining up in the right place depending on the D called and where the O is lined up, knowing one's general responsibilities on each play, knowing where to go as the play begins with the keys and direction of flow, reacting correctly and quickly, being in the right position to take the correct angle, etc.

There are last second calls and decisions.

The safety position is more complicated.

It's not just man or zone, and reacting to runs.

It’s the number of these decisions which often change from play to play and even at the last second.

Maybe someone with a better knowledge of the Griz D can explain this better.

And I assume it's okay for posters on message board to also express their views on the posts of others?

Have they not simplified it? What parts should they simplify more than they have? What parts of the scheme are fully installed, and what has been kept out to simplify it currently?

Oh shit, this is a message board? Thank God I'm able to share my perspective whether you like it or not. If you don't like what I have to say then move on.

I'm not sure, but when you see three guys standing there following a 34-second possession leading to a touchdown with their arms out and looking confused, it's pretty clear they need to simplify.

Is it? I honestly don't know that answer because I don't know how much has been simplified already. Was that play where one guy blew an assignment, and when they look at it on film it is clear? In that situation, why would you simplify or change a scheme it rather than correct that one player?

I see so many people on here who sound like they know best, but then they can't actually explain what is being done with our scheme, let alone where it should be fixed. If you can tell me what, specifically, you think should be simplified beyond the simplification that has already been done, I am all ears.

Reading this is comical.

Am I to infer that D1 football players are supposed to line up correctly based on the alignment signaled in and the offensive set? Read their keys correctly and quickly? Know their 1/11 responsibilities? Take correct angles to make tackles?

Huh! Who knew?

Looks like you don’t know much about the Griz D scheme and how permutations and adjustments it has.

Looks like many of the players don't either...
A few players on occasion. It’s a learning process for newer players. Some learn faster and better than others.

The complexity comes from the number of decisions on each play, how there are often important differences from play to play, and each type of play. And last second decisions. Bith secondary and front 6.

Is the military different and more complicated than it was in the past? Do people makes mistakes? Do more experienced people tend to make fewer mistakes?

Interesting…this perspective would imply that the real failure on the coaches would be failure in replacing the Gubner’s, Janacarros, Hills and Fouch’s with incoming freshmen 3-4 years ago that were ready to step up and fill their shoes, eliminating the necessity for transfers to plug holes.

Patrick Hayden has 4 tackles through 5 games. FOUR. That just ain’t gonna get it done. We knew we’d miss Gubner, but I’m not sure we appreciated how much.

Here’s my take: 2-3 of the LB rotation and 2-3 of the DB rotation (at their current level of talent) wouldn’t have seen the field last year. That’s not a scheme or “coaching up” problem, that’s a talent problem. Can they get better? Sure…But WILL they? I guess time will tell…

And I think Hayden is playing fairly well.

No, it was the play where no one was near the best receiver in the Big Sky in one of the most crucial parts of the game. Obviously, no player knew who blew the coverage because they were lost.
