Missoulian: Montana Grizzlies lose appeal of linebacker Riley Wilson's targeting penalty, ejection

I said it on twitter, that based upon the rule and what they consider to be targeting it was absolutely the right call on the field to make. I wasn't sure at the time the helmet came in contact w/ the facemask, but it clearly whipped Gonzalez's head back. Officials are going to make that call 9 out of 10 times.

I thought he had a chance to have the play overturned at the league office, because the tackle itself was within the rules or at least of the ESPN+ version it appeared to be, but obviously they looked at the outcome which was significant whiplash.

As a coach, I absolutely wouldn't have Wilson do much of anything different on that play. If anything his hat about two centimeters too high, but his body angle was perfect, head was up. He put his facemask into Gonzalez's center mass. Not much to dislike in terms of form.

Good opportunity to develop some depth and having Wilson coming in the second half is like having an all-star closer coming out for the 9th.

My only point of contention is that a good solid hit in the chest can also cause the head to whip back. If they're basing the call of targeting on head movement, that's not a great metric in my opinion.

Agreed. I hate the targeting call as the NCAA has it set up. In this case, like I said I feel like it was the right call as the official saw it on the field.

The problem is that video review at any level of the NCAA is goshdarn awful and the rule puts too much stress on the field officials to get it right the first time. So there is no consistency from one week to the next on what is and isn't targeting.

I honestly prefer it to be a booth review only and they call it on the field as unsportsmanlike conduct, roughing or whatever. Sort of like how professional soccer handles yellow/red tackles with VAR. Then officials don't have the stress of interpreting it on the field because they can't see the whole picture.

I don't think targeting is a bad idea to enforce, as coach I think it is absolutely essential to try to find ways to take some of the teeth/danger out of some of the more violent hits.
