War Sparrows HC Aaron Best in Trouble ?

I have driven by Cheney just west of Spokane on my way to and from the Emerald City, Seattle and that's my only knowledge of EWU so I am definitely no expert on Eastern's football program !!!

Fortunately, I have a friend here in Billings who 20 years ago played for the Eags so this past spring I asked him about Coach Best, knowing that the Eags had gone 3-8 in '22 and 4-7 last year and while getting a vote of confidence from new EWU AD Tim Collins last November but also with the implication that the Eags needed to return to the their winning ways from Coach Best's early tenure and previous to that under then-Eag's HC Baldwin, Wulf and The Big Human, Mike Kramer and do so this year !!!

My friend told me that Coach Best, who has coached 24 years in Cheney, where he played OL for the Eags before that, was OL Coach and while CB was not his position coach, he and his teammates loved CB, who had a great repore with both his O Line and the rest of the team. He told me last May that CB was on the hot seat @ EWU, and he really hoped he got the Eags turned around this year--he didn't think CB would survive a third consecutive losing season !!! ( He got a good laugh when I told him my favorite nickname for MSU out of many was The Shi##y Kitties !!! He asked me what was my favorite nickname for his Eags was so I told him the War Sparrows though I also like Magpies and Pigeons !!! )

It would seem on Saturday in Cheney on that God-awful red turf, his Eags might be playing with a sense of urgency for Coach Best, given their lousy 1-3 record, including an " Inferno" home field 35-3 loss to non-scholarship Drake from the Pioneer League.

So while I hope we pound the War Sparrows on the eyeball-hurting horrid red turf Saturday night, I do hope that Coach Best's Eags play well and go 6-0 after our game.

And if CB doesn't stay in Cheney as the Eag's skipper, I hope he lands on his feet elsewhere. I was reminded watching the KC-Atlanta MNF game last night by Mike Torico that Falcon DC Jimmy Page was the former UDUB HC, the UDUB HC when our GRIZ beat the Huskies 14-10 in 2021, our first win over Washington since 1920 in the aftermath of the last pandemic and WW I. That 5-7 or 4-8 season in Seattle was I believe his first and last.

And then that reminded me of former Idaho HC Tom Cable, who after the Vandals canned him after not doing well in Moscow and losing a game @ WA-GRIZ to us in 2003, a real no-no since Idaho was FCS at the time and according to the NCAA, was only to host FBS teams @ the Kibbee Dome, and not travel to play the FBS team at their place, said he would go somewhere else and " coach a bunch of fat guys."

And boy did he, winding up as Pete Carroll's OL Coach for Seattle, and winning a Super Bowl as The Hawk's OL coach.

On behalf of my Eag's friend here in Billings and myself, good luck Coach Best !!! On my behalf only, except for this Saturday, Sept. 28 vs. us.

Go GRIZ !!!

Hah love the War Sparrows nickname. Coach Best is most certainly on the hot seat, since this is his contract year. Compounding the issue is we're staring down a 3rd straight losing season. Prior to this event, the last losing season EWU had was 2006, and before that... I think the 90's.

Anyway, I get the feeling Best is probably a great assistant or position coach, but I'm just not sure he's HC material. IMO, our teams just haven't gotten better over the course of the season. I also feel like Best was never able to bring in great coordinators either, though we did have CWU's coach who seemed great as an OC but abruptly left. And maybe that's the bigger issue. Although he did take EWU to the chipper in 2018, the cracks really started to show once Baldwin's recruits started to graduate. Most crucially at QB, where Baldwin had an eye for finding the overlooked QB and developing them into something great.

So yea, my money is on Best not getting a renewal. Which is unfortunate that things turned out like this. With Best's history and loyalty, he'd have likely stuck around a very long time at EWU even if he saw the success that Baldwin had. Our AD seemingly made a great hire for men's BB, so hopefully he'll score a great hire for football. Maybe Baldwin can make a return like Hauck did for Montana, but I'm just not going to hold my breath on that.

When I was on Maui in April, I got to chatting with a guy at the hotel bar who is actually a big time booster for the Eags. He told me that the sole cause of all of Easterns problems are because of Aaron Best. He went on to tell me that the OC who left the program last winter said he was quitting because Aaron Best is completely incompetent, refuses to listen to his assistants and is the sole reason Eastern finds themselves in the position they’re in.

I can assure you Tim Collins is chomping at the bit to make a coaching change in Football. He already got to make one in Men’s Basketball, and now he can check this box off as well. He sees this as a stepping stone to a bigger job, and the only criteria they’re (mostly) judged on are the coaching hires they make. Staying at Eastern in today’s climate of college athletics is not a very successful long term plan. Aaron Best has a lot riding on this game on Saturday.

I think you are a 100 % correct--after losing to Drake, Griz til I die, beating us could possibly be one of the wins necessary to save Coach Best's job.

So I hope that we don't overlook the Eags, and I don't think Coach Hauck and staff will let that happen !!!

My main concern for us is do we have enough gas left in the tank to whip Eastern at their home after such a tough, hard-hitting, physical game last Saturday against WCU ? ( I hope and think our depth will come through !!! )

Go GRIZ !!!

I'm counting on divine intervention from the Football Gods to will a victory to EWU. The Griz haven't won yet on the red turf when the Griz coin was hidden in the dirt during construction, though I don't think you've played there since the new turf was installed.

Against UC Davis I'm also counting on divine intervention to keep our undefeated streak alive against them, like that playoff game a few years back where Davis almost had their first victory and EWU pulled off a ridonculous play to secure a come from behind win in the closing seconds. Even ESPN's chance to win % graph was very much in EWU's favor when victory seemed all but assured to Davis.
