Defense- middle of the field??

Seems like MSU could easily throw it up the center of the field, at-will. It was the zone behind the LBs “hook-to-curl” zone and in front of the safeties quadrant.

It seems like the same exploitation as when Idaho came to Missoula a few years ago and picked us apart with short 5-10yds passes. (McCoy jumps on the scene) Is our style of defense, susceptible to this? It seemed like last year this was not a problem.

NAU torched us with this strategy last season, but they figured it out.

A lot of the issues on Saturday came from over-pursuit, bad angles, and being out of position, not scheme, just like it did last season in Flagstaff.

Plus they have a veteran, big, QB with one of the better arms in the FCS, and good WRs. They played the game they usually play. Last year they averaged over 300 passing yards a game with the second string QB. Yes, it was frustrating to watch but even with that, I think Walhberg said the D held them below their average. No doubt there is work to be done but when you can notch in the W column they did an adequate job.

Agree. I think the most frustrating thing for the coaches and players had to be the 3rd and longs Missouri State converted. That can all be corrected. We have smart veteran coaches. Take away the fumbled punt and Griz give up 17 which is decent.

They were 5th last year in all of FCS. #3 was WCU. Will need to figure some things out in the next few weeks because the catamounts looked very efficient in the pass game.

My thought is that we didn’t get to the qb enough early in game. He had too long to throw. Ne was bothered at times when we got close. But hits and sacks are much more effective. We missed Riley Wilson’s speed and sacking ability. For whatever reasons, our backers didn’t get many sacks or enough pressure. I’m not saying there weren’t more problems with these completions.

Definitely missed his speed. Our game speed wasn’t there yet. We also telegraphed almost every blitz pre snap so there was no surprise or lanes as the offensive line adjusted their assignments accordingly.

I agree and also poor tackling it didn’t seem to have the wrap them up like usual. I’m sure this will be corrected. Looking forward to much better outcome this week! As Always Go Griz

A few of those catches that were made were pretty great from the WRs too. I would say 3-4 of the catches we had DBs in the right positions they just need to make a play on the ball better, which I have confidence that they will as the season progresses.

Anybody have any update on Wilson? What is wrong with him? His ability erases a lot of the things we’re worried about right now.

Commendable, scheduling to play a team like this, we did good enough, and will be in better position to amplify our needs. We could have played a lesser team, bowled them over, and learned less!
