"Mountain West​

Among Group of Five conferences, the Mountain West Conference had the best retention for all-conference players.

American Athletic​

Although the American Athletic Conference lost fewer athletes with all-conference honors to the transfer portal, all but one left for a team in a major conference.

Conference USA​

The destinations of outgoing transfers in Conference USA were more varied, but the majority still ended up at schools in one of the four biggest conferences. This was the only league that sent an athlete to the Pac-12, which now consists of just Oregon State and Washington State.

Mid-American Conference​

Though athletes with all-conference honors in the Mid-American Conference transferred out at a high rate, not as many went to schools in the Power Four.

Sun Belt​

The Sun Belt Conference had the largest exodus of players with 21 leaving for other schools. The majority of outgoing transfers landed in the Power Four.

The impact of the transfer portal is striking: After eliminating those who graduated or departed for the NFL, a whopping 40% of the remaining players with all-conference honors switched to another program. The vast majority of them bolted to a team in the Power Four (the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big Ten and Southeastern conferences). Even when adding second- and third-team all-conference picks, 36% wound up transferring.

The smaller conferences have always had a disadvantage compared with their larger peers. Now, they have effectively become a farm system—developing talented players only to lose them to their wealthier competitors.

At least Montana isn't losing 40% of its first-team all-conference players and 26% of its first, second, and third-team all-conference players. The G5 really is the farm system for the top conferences. The MW holds their players a bit better.

So far, Montana seems to be benefitting from the Portal, on a net basis. Especially, the last few years.

I think the FCS playoffs and being able to go deep in the players in many years, helps hold top FCS school players. UM is doing better than the MSU in that regard. I wonder if lesser amounts of NIL money at the G5 keeps FCS players at the top FCS schools, or some of them. I can see how a jump to the P4 would be more attractive than a jump to the G5, for those few who have the ability to go to the P5.

Coaching at most G5 schools must be hard and a mess these days.

People who attach names to the backs of jerseys must be in demand these days.

The flip side of that is that MSU has had more good players than UM the past 2-3 years that can move up for guaranteed NIL dollars. I will credit the two examples off the top of my head in Gubner and Bergen that I'm sure could have moved up for a payday... but stayed with the griz. Those are the only two I can think of that are clearly good enough to be instantly guaranteed NIL like several MSU players recently.

It's completely accurate that UM is retaining players better than MSU. In the last 5 years, UM has lost 2 all-conferences players and a punter. UM had some o-lineman who could have moved up for money. Probably a corner or two. Some backers. Regardless of the reasons, MSU had lost a lot more good talent than UM has, and has not gotten players from the Portal like UM has. You don't know enough about UM football to be able to make a knowledgeable comment on this.

This will be the year where the separation becomes very apparent. MSU will still be a top echelon team for FCS, but they will be far behind U of M at the end of the season. Vigen has not capitalized on the portal in the same manner that Hauck has.

It’s hard finding kids to come to Bozeman who are good with drinking and driving and then calling buddies with suspended licenses to cover their tracks.
