Waded Cruzado Announces her Retirement

In general, I agree with your broad assesssment, though the Gianforte foundation doesn't contribute solely to MSU - It's about 3 to 1 MSU over UM. Foundations cast a wide net and the governor's donations to the two universities aren't making or breaking either.

The liberal arts school vs engineering stuff has been a crutch for Main Hall. In the worst of UM's spiral, I charted the university's enrollment decline compared to other flagship state universities and liberal arts schools. UM did worse than average on both counts. Enrollment was decling at liberal arts colleges, but Montana's decline was among the worst.
Also, liberal arts at MSU is doing much better than at Montana. MSU isn't cutting FTEs in liberal arts.
Did you factor in the turmoil going on at the University when you did you comparison of decline. U of Mt had an incompetent President, approved and vetted by the BOR, an adversarial press both locally and nationally, allegations of rape by a coed involving the starting QB, overcompensation by the President in terminating the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, the list could go on but I believe these issues likely skewed your numbers.
However, your post did hit a hot button with me, the BOR and Waded. That is State is a school of Arts and Sciences and the U of Liberal Arts. As such why is there even a duplication of liberal arts programs at State?
For example the establishment of the Film School in Bozeman. I know it was funded by donation and designated to be located in Bozeman but shouldn't the BOR have pushed the matter to the University of Montana that already had much of the curriculum? I suspect waded presented it to the BOR and they gave her whatever she wanted as is their history.
The expansion of the MSU Business College is another example of unnecessary duplication. The University has always been the standard for the state in Business education and there was no reason to expand State.
I wonder how the BOR would react if there was an active credible plan for developing an engineering program that rivals State at the University.
This duplication of programs is unnecessary and an expense to the citizens of Montana.

Wha?????

MSU has had a college of business for decades and business was in the first academic catalog back in the 1800s.

Msu’s film program had been around for decades as well and has been the home for Montana pbs.

Also, I wouldn’t loop business or film in the liberal arts category, as they are both pre-professional programs.

Liberal arts are English, Philosophy, Biology, History, Mathematics, etc.

I’m going to have to tell my wife she her bio degree in undergrad was liberal arts. That ought to get me a nice eye roll.

How is the BOR the problem?
Read Billing Griz Fans post for starters. BOR is a rubber stamp for whomever has more push and political connections. Right now it's MSU, and has been since Schweitzer was Gov. Remember him trying to push Pat Williams for regent? An avowed enemy of UM athletics like William's wife. Took an uprising here on eGriz to get it blocked in the MT Senate.
Ever since the Pflu/O'Day/JJ/Krakwhore debacle, BOR just stands by and let's UM get shit on by the Federal bureaucracy, local and state press and NGOs like Missoula Rising. (Remember, one of eGriz's stellar posters is a member of that leftwing gutter trash, but I doubt he has the courage to admit it now.) UM gets branded 'rape U', but no pushback whatsoever. MSU gets whatever it wants, enrollment skyrockets, but where is the BOR when the WAAC Waded won't make the clear choice in the MSdUi affairs and come clean with the facts. No transparency, but obfuscation, no comment, and 'due process.' And the BOR, CRICKETS! The BOR is a joke, and needs to go, like the Commissioner's Office.

Okay. But I don’t know why the BOR gets all that blame. Some of what Billings said was right, but some of it was inaccurate. Yes, the BOR was involved in picking Engstrom, but so were people from UM. The BOR could and should have intervened sooner with Engstrom. Thx.

Montana PBS is a joint venture between The University of Montana and State. I am proud of my liberal arts degree in Microbiology. It seems wbtfg shares such enlightening pearls of wisdom often an EGriz.

No offense to anyone else’s wives/girlfriends, but she is the best woman on the face of the planet. I’ve accomplished a few things, but getting her to marry me is #1 on that list. Still don’t know how I pulled that off. It’s like if I ran a FFGPTB, but it ended up a FFGPTD.
Probably better state as one of...

I think you-re overlooking the influence The Burns Center for Telecommunications yielded. Ole Conrad was sure proud of that.

What was 'inaccurate?' inquiring minds want know.

Her greatest asset was probably hating the University of Montana more than anyone in the entire world, and she stopped at nothing to get ahead of us. Incredibly good at her job is an understatement. MSU would not be anywhere close to where they are today without her.
She did a great job and put them on the map
