Expectations

It sure seems like a lot of Griz fans I've talked to and seen on here are more hyped about Huot than any other QB, largely because of what they saw in the spring game.

Not trying to knock the kid, but if anyone is getting an outsized amount of hype, I feel like it's him, and not Ah Yat.
I was wondering about that too. Seems like we've seen a lot of spring games where one player or another "emerges" as a favorite, only to find out in the fall that they really weren't all that great. I've not hating on Huot, just saying that one spring game isn't enough to know what's what.

I think it Huot’s case the hype also comes from his high school career in Helena and how highly recruited he was, including FBS teams. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he may have been the top rated player in MT after showing out in AA.

No. 1 player via 247 and had MSU and UM offers. Looks like he had Fresno St. interest and sorta Oregon St. interest as well as NDSU interest but no offers that I can find.

Preface: I really don't want cat fans opinions or ridiculousness in this thread please. If any post please ignore them so that the rest of us can have an actual discussion without their trolling.

Also, I'm no Brint Wahlberg so this is not intended to be any kind of exhaustive preview. Just some of my thoughts.

I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I am just not entirely sure what to expect this season. After last year, it would be very easy to assume that this year is going to be exactly the same, ie maybe one regular season loss and then rolling through the playoffs to the natty, but that's probably unrealistic. None of us thought that last year would play out the way it did, and while it certainly went better than most of us thought it would (especially after the NAU game), setting our expectations too high this year could definitely end in a lot of disappointment if and when things don't play out like we hope.

I'm trying to temper my expectations for this year while at the same time remaining optimistic.

I think we would all agree that the offense needs to improve, and having a QB that can throw the ball farther than ~20 yards will be a definite improvement, but losing McDowell's scrambling ability is also a factor. The Griz offense has always been able to hit one or two really big pass plays that can completely change the course of a game, and that was lacking last year. Do Fife or AhYat have that competency? I think they are absolutely better pure passers than McDowell so the opportunity will be there, if the o-line steps it up a notch. Pawlak will hopefully ensure better o-line play and the depth on the line is certainly looking good. Getting Cole Grossman back is definitely going to help in so many ways. Will it take him some time to get back to his previous form?

I think special teams will be very good again. Junior Bergen is the BOSS. Kicking struggled some last year and would have put away some games early that ended up going down to the wire because of missed kicks. We've always had such amazing kickers that last year was definitely frustrating at times. Is that area shored up for this year? I can't imagine that Bobby won't get it figured out.

The strength of the team the last few years has inarguably been the defense and we lost a lot there but also got some promising transfers, along with some good talent coming up. Getting Hank Nuce back from injury is fantastic as well. He made some good contributions in the playoffs last year. Having Tim Hauck in the co D coordinator is a net positive. Losing Gubby is probably the biggest hole, but it seems like the rest of the defensive line is ready to take over. I'm looking forward to seeing how Pat Hayden works out - he took over the #99 jersey from Gub.

Okay, that's a lot of thoughts. What are y'all's expectations of the team this year? How are the respective units going to play? How many games do we win?
Just wanted to say thank you for creating a good thread.

Okay, I understand better what you were saying now. I'm sure his last name doesn't hurt at all, especially amongst the fans. Not that we're ever unreasonable or anything. Haha. Honestly, I think it's just excitement more than anything maybe? Like many have said, recently there have been a string of one year QB starters, none of whom had any real ties to the program. It's kind of thrilling to get legacy kids whose dads were standout players during the Griz rise to dominance in the '90s. I think it's pretty fun to have a Gurnsey, a Reynolds, a Goicoechea, and an AhYat on the team this year. Maybe these guys won't live up to their dads' abilities, but we can hope, and if nothing else the continuity is just really cool. (I hope I didn't miss any other legacy players.)
Does anybody remember who Brian tutored under?? Yes, DD who was probably the best QB coach he had.
Would anybody like to see how Brian v Josh performed in mop-up that year?

Player GP Rating COMP ATT INT % YDS TD Long AVG/G
Dickenson, Dave 15 168.92 431 624 11 69.07 % 5676 51 90 378.40
Paffhausen, Josh 12 125.71 31 45 2 68.89 % 352 0 30 29.33
Yat, Brian ah 8 66.06 11 27 2 40.74 % 129 0 27 16.13

I think we are ok as Brian went on, under Pease, to throw for over 5000 yds in 1996.

Relax folks.

Brent Pease coached Dave Dickinson , Ah Yat and Kellen Moore at Boise St. Just to make a few.

I think we will go really far if a QB emerges. I know it's unpopular and he's likely gotten much better, but I wasn't really sold on Ah Yat as a natural passer last season. I know, true freshman and all that, but I think if his name was Bill Smith from Bumsville, Idaho, I don't know if people would be quite as high on him. Just my opinion.

Also, I guess this is as good a thread as any, but does anyone remember Grossman's injury off the top of their head? Like what ligament?
A fair take and I agree. We haven't seen enough of any of them under center in a real game. I recall being excited about Brown and then he threw a goal line pick vs. Sac and we all know the rest of the story. Touted QB's bomb at every level including multi million dollar models in the NFL evaluated by experts. If one in the QB room emerges as solid or better it should be a fun season. Going to need better than solid to grab the big prize in any case.

I hope so, although it was a small sample. I think QB will be what determines how good this team is. If we have one (or two) that will get the job done, then a deep run is likely.
My sample of Ah Yat throwing includes practices and summer practices, not just games. It also includes what coaches and players have said.

I think everyone needs to remember that Ah Yat was a true freshman last year and was able to work his way up to the #2 with his work ethic and what the coaches were seeing. We haven’t had that in awhile, yet we’ve watched other BSC schools ride young talented QB’s to success. He got valuable experience last year and he’s got good competition this year. Who ever comes out of that room as the number one will have earned it.

Yes, that is exactly what I was trying to say but didn't articulate it quite as clearly as you did.

After reading this article about Coach Pease and the offense, my expectations just went up!!

One of the things that stuck out to me in that article is after mentioning the main RBs, Eli, Nick and Rocker, they also mentioned Fonoti. Guy has been there a week and already impressing the coaches. Plus I saw Colter post a pic of him and the kid looks like a beast.

Hey asswipe - you've been told time and again to get the f*&% off our board. Nobody cares what you have to say. Go try to impress your mouser buddies on scat nation.

Some good points so on this thread. This team has a ton of experience in most areas besides QB, and a few spots on D. The players stepping in are more than capable and should get valuable experience throughout the season. QB obviously is the biggest question mark in terms of experience. However, all 3 guys have the talent to be effective if called on. I think Fife has the inside track as he has the most experience as well as being more of a dual threat. He also has a very strong arm. Ah Yat and Huot are also more than capable and it will be interesting to see it play out.

The Griz offense is a nightmare to defend with plus talent at RB, WR, and TE. Pease does an amazing job of multiple sets, motions, and schemes to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers. The beauty of a balanced offense is the D can't key on stopping one thing. As they say, a quarterbacks best friend is a strong running game. I think once a QB does settle in this O could be one of the highest scoring in the nation if the O line stays healthy.

The D will be fast and disruptive as always, the new D line guys will need to step up as well as a couple guys in the back end. There will probably be some growing pains and the teams with maulers and a downhill running game will give us the most trouble in my opinion.

Special teams will be solid as usual, look for lots of short kickoffs and punts going out of bounds to avoid #5. It's always fun to see the young guys and walk ons making big plays in the kicking game. Overall, this is a loaded and well coached team. I'm quite optimistic for this season, it will be a fun ride, Go Griz!

"Montana has employed a two-QB system in the past, and it's not a given that one guy will emerge out of fall camp as "the guy." For Pease, that doesn't mean Montana is without a QB that can get the job done.

"We're getting the quarterbacks to where they're running the show and they're good at what they need to do. Not just good, but the best in the league and the best in the nation," said Pease.

"They're all very talented kids and I think that's something they have the ability to do."
