Expectations

Ah Yat completed 68.42% without an interception. HIs passing rating of 137 was the highest qb on team. He's a terrific passer, in my view.
That’s fantastic, thanks for the stats. I hope it all comes together. I was just sharing a take that I didn’t think he looked DI ready last year. Again, really tough to do so as a true frosh who only gets four games. Also, again, I’m no expert. I’m sure he’s developed.

Is there a better coaching staff in all of FCS? I don’t think so. 2 of 3 QB’s are more mobile than being given credit for. Offensive production will not be an issue. Linebackers will be exceptional. Secondary, very solid. The one big question is D Line. Anything less than a repeat trip to Frisco would be disappointing. The BSC is always tough, so hopefully there is not a let down game somewhere on the schedule, which appears to be quite soft this year.

Maybe the kid was getting too much hype too early which can be bad, but at the same time he has gotten a lot of praise and not only from our coaching staff but also from others whom I would consider to be fairly credible evaluators of talent.

It was incredibly surprising to me that he got the QB2 spot over Vidlak last year, because that is so counter to Bobby's normal modus operandi. Which to me said that he had earned it, but at the same time he was still so incredibly young, and continues to be young. Seems to me that he still has a lot of learning, growing and maturing to do, which is the reason Fife was brought in. I fully expect Fife to earn the starting job in camp, but could be pushed later on by AhYat.

I don't consider myself to be qualified to evaluate whether the kid has the natural abilities he needs to be a standout QB at this level, or if it's been the learning and coaching from his dad that gave him a leg up. I really hope that it's not just his last name as you mentioned. I honestly don't think so but time will tell.

In any case, talent and potential won't get anyone very far without the hard work, humility, and teamwork needed to play this position at a high level. There are plenty of very talented people who flame out, including one notorious example from Montana (the state, not the university).

I'm excited to see how the QB room develops this year. And I think we'll be okay with whoever is under center.

If I recall correctly, our line up of no senior receivers, and starters with limited catches as a group, last year seemed to have trouble getting open early in the season. I thought that hurt Vidlak, and Cliff's ability to run and extend plays helped them have more time to get open for him. Neither QB should have to deal with that issue this year.

Not an expectation but I have this weird feeling that we finally get a cat/Griz playoff game. We have been on the same side of the bracket a few times and only one game away from it but the catz always fucked it up. Last year, the year with McNeese, and I think there was another year too, maybe a undsu year.
If the Griz get the chance, they would not fuck it up like the catz.
I think this is the year and there could be two games in bozo, where we get the last laugh.
It’s going to happen sooner than later, and this could be the year.
With the current rankings, it’s not hard to envision. bubz get the 3 seed. Griz also drop some rando game and get a lower seed, maybe 6 seed. And voila!
2nd game would be in Missoula.

And the 'Scats fucked it up just last year. All they had to do was beat UNDSU at home. Couldn't manage it. But hey, mony assures us they were better than both UNDSU and USDSU, so they got that going for them...

Tbh, even if the cats would've beat NDSU, I'm not sure they would've beat South Dakota the next week. Mellott and Chambers were both hurt if you remember, and they would've limped into the Dakota Dome

Ok I’ve stayed out of it but NDSU won 45-17 with one td coming in garbage time. Yes no Mellott but Chamber’s injury was minor and he would’ve been able to play by then.

My expectations are as high as ever, especially given the outcome of last year which I believe produced a much bigger level of player culture (which was already high) and heightened level of fan pride. Don't get me wrong, I think both of those things existed at high levels as they have in the past but given how the season started and ultimately ended up, that added greatly to the vibe that was already there. Instead of talking about what could have been ('22 et. al) we were finally allowed to say we were there... I was lucky enough to be around for all of our past championship appearances and remember well how great it was to tell family, friends, co-workers that we won or played in the NC, something that has been missing for quite some time. This year should be great! Go Griz!! Almost as much fun as telling people we beat the Cats 16 straight years...!

I hope so, although it was a small sample. I think QB will be what determines how good this team is. If we have one (or two) that will get the job done, then a deep run is likely.

So did a lot of scat fans last year, and by September at that. 😂
I've posted this before, but I firmly believe the winner of Cat\griz goes to Frisco, loser does not. We'll see if that happens. I also don't think both teams will be 11-1 as several people think

2nd game may be in Missoula if The Griz win the Brawl. I am speculating if they lose it and drop some other random game too. Then, I think it would be in bozo again.

Yes, “last year” bubz fucked it up as I said.

Great post as always. Just for clarification: I don't think, and never said, that it's just the last name. I just think that might give a bit of a hype boost is all. Not talking about coaching decisions because they want to play the best they have on the roster. I'm talking about fan hype.

Okay, I understand better what you were saying now. I'm sure his last name doesn't hurt at all, especially amongst the fans. Not that we're ever unreasonable or anything. Haha. Honestly, I think it's just excitement more than anything maybe? Like many have said, recently there have been a string of one year QB starters, none of whom had any real ties to the program. It's kind of thrilling to get legacy kids whose dads were standout players during the Griz rise to dominance in the '90s. I think it's pretty fun to have a Gurnsey, a Reynolds, a Goicoechea, and an AhYat on the team this year. Maybe these guys won't live up to their dads' abilities, but we can hope, and if nothing else the continuity is just really cool. (I hope I didn't miss any other legacy players.)

It sure seems like a lot of Griz fans I've talked to and seen on here are more hyped about Huot than any other QB, largely because of what they saw in the spring game.

Not trying to knock the kid, but if anyone is getting an outsized amount of hype, I feel like it's him, and not Ah Yat.
