1. "I think Fife and Ah Yat are the two guys that are at the lead of that pack," Hauck said heading into camp. "I thought that Hout had a nice spring and proved that he’s got capability to help out. I think we need to have two guys that can play. I don’t really give a dang who takes the first snap in the first game obviously. I think we’ll play multiple guys."

"We used to say if you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have one," Hauck said. "I think that’s antiquated in college football today because as much as we run these guys, all of us, that’s part of the deal and part of moving the ball, it’s part of scoring points is you’re playing with 11, not a guy taking the snap and handing it off or dropping back and throwing it. He’s part of the scheme. So I think you have to have two."

2. "I think we’ll be alright on the defensive side," Bobby Hauck said. "There’s probably less proven players there. That’s where we lost more guys. But I think we’ll tackle. I think we’ll play hard. In fact, I know we will. When you start with those two things, I think you have a chance to be pretty solid on defense. And we’ve been really, really, really good on defense. We just have been always. I hope that transpires this year too. We’ll see."

The Griz have some big holes to fill on that side of the ball, starting with Big Sky defensive player of the year Alex Gubner at nose tackle. They also need to replace three linebackers, two safeties, one corner and one defensive end.

"You lose the conference player of the year on defense, we got to replace him," Hauck said. "So how do you do that? We lost Robby (Hauck) and Pat O’Connell last year, we didn’t have to have a guy equal to them in their position, we just had to replace the production. It’s the same thing with Alex (Gubner), we got to replace the production.

"Those position groups have got to come along. Defensive line, guys got to make plays, guys got to be productive. They will, I think. Linebacker, we lose some guys that played a lot, but we’ve got guys that can come in and do that. It’s the art of college football, bringing young guys along."

3. "Montana has added 17 transfers this offseason. That's compared to 21 freshmen the team signed out of high school.

"The strategy has changed in this regard is we don’t have the ability to project and plan ahead," Hauck said of recruiting in the portal era. "You used to have a chart by class. I’d plan three years out, and barring attrition, on what we would be taking positionally in recruiting and then fill in the transfers if a kid quit or graduated or whatever. The ability to do that has gone away. Now Jan. 1 you’re assembling your roster for August each year. And then you play with that team."

4. "On the offensive side of the ball, we’ve got good depth on the offensive line," Hauck said. "Feel strongly that we can play into our two-deep there, which is a great place to start."

5. "Back are standout receivers Junior Bergen, Keelan White and Aaron Fontes. Also returning are Jerry Rice Award winner Eli Gillman and veteran Nick Ostmo at running back in addition to transfer Stevie Rocker Jr., who stood out in the spring game. Then there's the return of All-American tight end Cole Grossman, the move of Xavier Harris into the slot and many more players."

6. "I feel like we have a couple of quarterbacks that can contribute and play well," Hauck said. "I like our receivers. I like our running backs. So I think we’ve got the nucleus of a good football team. I think we’re always pretty good in the kicking game. I think we’ll be good there again. So we should have a fairly complete football team."

I think that's a pretty short sided statement. That's what lead us to lose at NAU by picking a quaterback that should never have been on the team. How do you think the other quaterbacks feel after reading this ?
Nothing like putting your foot in your mouth at the begining of the season.

Well maybe but we have some of the best backs and receivers in the FCS. Maybe Bobby should watch some tape on the Cats and how they destroyed Mellot by running him.Last year we had a running quaterback and it worked but this is a different year and we have different quaterbacks none of which have been proven to be runners.

WTF are you talking about? He said basically the same thing about Vidlak and McDowell last year that he is about Fife and Ah Yat. Then he replaced Vidlak not only as starter, but also as backup. And then we went to the national championship, anyways, despite how much you guys want to act like the Vidlak mistake was so egregious.

You guys are so goddamn weird about Hauck and his QBs.

What do you want him to do? Lie about his depth chart so our QBs' feelings aren't hurt?

UM didn't lose to NAU by playing 2 QB's early in the season to see who developed in the best one. UM ended up going to the national championship game and having a great season, because they worked on developing and figuring out who the best QB was early in the season. Good coaching. And the NAU ;loss motivated the team to get better, and they did.

At NAU, Vidlak was 27-37 with 1 TD and 1 pick. Was sacked 7 times. Do you think the o-line played well or had anything to do with the sacks?

I'm sure the QB's feel fine reading that, because that is what they have been told and experienced all along since the spring. It's a competition.

And every coach and player you talk to, says the same thing. And no one is worried about QB, because there are 2, or 3, very good QB's.

It's freaking bizarre. They are DI athletes who should know the drill. Want to play more? Get better.

I want him to pick the best person for the job and not assume which one it will be.

Stopped by practice for a few minutes. Didn't see much but three transfer defensive lineman Lehrman, Hayden and RB Wilson V are grown men for sure. Big and atletic looking. Especially Wilson V.. he looks like a physical specimen.
Hayden is 285. He seems confident and I assume he is good. He's glad he got no. 99. "Chose Montana over offers from Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Jacksonville State, Old Dominion, Ball State, Maine, Central Connecticut, and Western Kentucky, among others."

Lehrman from Youngstown St. "Also received an offer from Old Dominion, Incarnate Word, and Mercer coming out of the portal."

No, you just want to complain. And show how little you know about football.
Hoops, you don’t understand. You have to pick the best person for the job without assuming who it is. It’s a bit like pin the tail on the donkey or blind darts. That’s how all the best DI coaches do it. Just picking the best person for the job with no assessment.

Dude made the dumbest fucking post of all time, but he knows it, and he did it on purpose.

Just something interesting I saw on YouTube on 406 sports. Bobby was doing an interview and in the background, I see what seems to be the QBs warming up and I saw 6. 5 with their numbered black jerseys and one with a blue one. I thought we had only 5 QBs on the roster. Did we add another one?

McDowell developed as a complete QB during the season. He was developed and brought along by the staff. He did not early in the season make all his reads and it was frustrating for people in the stands that had played and coached. But it was very fun to watch his progress and skill set develop and then the offense play calls evolve around that skill set.

This is a good and long interview of Bobby, involving multiple reporters.

UM does strength/max tests only twice a year. Sometimes, a 3d time after season for the younger guys. The coaches look at the strength reports basically everyday.

Good depth at o-linie. 8 or 10 guys who can play, and all of them will play.

He seems to feel good about the qb room.

There are some new rules. 2-minute warning and some ability to use technology, like snapshots on the sidelines. Someone else can expand on what the rules are.

It sounds like the analysts can have some involvement in practices now. Someone else can report on what the new rules allow.
