MBBALL 2024-25 Griz Basketball Schedule Tracker

Update 7/18

The Big Sky has officially released the conference schedule. Games will begin on Thursday January 2 and run through Monday March 3. Here is the men's schedule:

January 2 @ Eastern Washington
January 4 @ Idaho
January 9 vs. Northern Arizona
January 11 vs. Northern Colorado
January 16 @ Weber State
January 18 @ Idaho State
January 20 vs. Idaho
January 25 vs. Montana State
January 30 vs. Portland State
February 1 vs. Sacramento State
February 6 @ Northern Colorado
February 8 @ Northern Arizona
February 13 vs. Idaho State
February 15 vs. Weber State
February 22 @ Montana State
February 27 @ Sacramento State
March 1 @ Portland State
March 3 vs. Eastern Washington

A few takeaways:

I never like starting on the road, but if you're going to start on the road, this is the trip to start with. A re-building Eastern team and then a Vandy's team that I think will be improved but still not good. We can kind of ease our way into conference play this year with those first 3 games before our first true test against UNC in Missoula on January 11. Also, how nice is it going to be to get 4 consecutive home games in league play from January 20-February 1? I feel like we always get shafted when it comes to that, so I'm looking forward to that when the guys will get 12 days at home. You gotta dominate that stretch. The 2 cat-Griz games will be January 25 in Missoula and February 22 in Bozeman.

Overall I think we got a pretty fair shake this year. I usually have at least 1 gripe every year with the league schedule, but I think this turned out pretty good for us.
Also, here's the Griz Basketball schedule graphic and the entire conference schedule matrix if you would prefer a visual.

As for non-conference, I'm hoping to have a couple more updates for everyone hopefully by next week. It's my understanding that the Summit League matchups will be released by the end of July, and I'm close to having a couple more opponents nailed down here soon. A reminder of what the non-conference schedule looks like so far:

November 8 @ Oregon
November 20-23 vs. Utah Tech (part of Zootown Classic)
December 22 @ Northern Iowa

Utah State has revealed their non-conference schedule and in the process has helped us uncover one of our games. We will take on the Aggies in the Smith Spectrum on Monday November 18. The Aggies have had a big offseason after Danny Sprinkle departed for UW. They hired Jerrod Calhoun (formerly of Youngstown State) as their head coach and have brought in 8 new transfers this year so they're really quite a mystery. I couldn't tell you how good they'll be this season. I do know that the last 3 head coaches at USU have all lead the Ags to the NCAA tournament and Calhoun will probably do the same. But will it be this season? Hard to say. This could be a competitive game but the Smith is historically one of the toughest places to play in College Basketball. Should be a great test!

Doesn't appear there is going to be a Summit League vs Big Sky Conference challenge unless they schedule it in between Christmas and New Years day.

That schedule you’re seeing above is Utah State’s non-conference schedule. I just posted that to show everyone that the Griz are on it since we had no prior knowledge of a matchup with them.

The Summit League Challenge is happening and the games will take place on December 4 and 7. In fact, Eastern posted their entire non conference schedule yesterday and their Summit League opponents are North Dakota and South Dakota State. So the schools have been made aware of the matchups, there just hasn’t been an official announcement from the 2 conferences yet. I’m thinking early next week we’ll hear who our opponents are.

I don't know if they try to get different matchups for the Summit League Challenge each year, but if so, our opponents probably would be Denver, UMKC, Oral Roberts, or St. Thomas as I feel like (just offhand) that we have played all the Dakotas and Omaha recently. We played St. Thomas recently but it was apart of our tourney.

My understanding is it’s based off where you finish in the regular season standings. For example, Eastern was first so they get the 1 and 2. We were third which means we would get the 3 and 4 which were UMKC and St. Thomas.

What’s interesting though is UNC was second so they would also get the 1 and 2 (SDSU, UND), but UNC already has a non-conference game scheduled with SDSU that’s outside of the challenge series. So maybe they’ll give us that pairing and then slide UNC down to the 3 and 4 pairing? It’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out

And would you look at that? We’ve got finalized opponents for this years Zootown Classic which has been re-named the Stew Morrill Classic. I previously reported on Utah Tech participating but joining them are the Denver Pioneers and the CSUN Matadors.

The Pioneers went 17-17 overall and 6-10 in Summit League play but went on a miraculous run in the SLC tournament all the way to the championship game where they fell to eventual champ SDSU. There are some people that consider them a dark horse in the Summit so they could be an interesting opponent.

The Matadors were 19-15 overall but kind of struggled in Big West play going 9-11. Their program seems to be trending in the right direction after they fell on pretty tough times over the last decade plus. The Big West race is usually very interesting so I’m excited to see these guys.

Been a good 2 days of scheduling news. Expect Summit League opponents next week!

Update 8/1

The month of July was good to us. We uncovered a road game at Utah State and got all of our Stew Morrill Classic opponents (Utah Tech, Denver, CSUN). Plus we got our conference schedule. As we head into August I'm expecting another fast and furious month of scheduling news. I have an inclination that the athletic department is pretty close to finishing the schedule. They know who our Summit League opponents are, there just still hasn't been an official announcement. I have an inclination (nothing confirmed) that we're gonna host SDSU on December 4 and go to UND on December 7 for our two Summit League games. Don't ask me why I think that, that's just my theory I've developed.

That means there is still 5 games to uncover. Of those 5, I'm expecting 2 of those (maybe 3) to be non-D1 home games. We can cross off Tech and Western as they have both announced their schedules, and we are not on them. That leaves Carroll, Providence, Northern, Rocky and MSUB. We've seen Northern the last 2 years. Are we really gonna see them 3 years in a row? I'm not sure. I'm kind of speculating it might be Carroll and Providence this year. They both have new coaches and may not know what they'll be getting themselves into so they could be prime candidates.

That leaves 2-3 spots still open. As of right now, we only have 4 road games so I'm expecting at least 2 more. Not entirely sure who those would be against, but there's a lot of Midwest flavor on this schedule with UNI and 2 Summit League Challenge games (Denver is not Midwest). I'm keeping a close eye on the Mountain West as I think we may see one more game against the MWC. A couple teams I'm keeping an eye on are Wyoming, Air Force and San Diego State. All three of those teams still have a lot of holes to fill on their schedule. I think they're the likeliest candidates. After that, I have no idea who else might be a potential candidate for a road game. I feel like we would've heard about other P4 money games by now. I'm gonna keep an eye on Gonzaga as they still have some holes to fill and perhaps we could see them again.

Don't be surprised if the non-conference schedule is announced by the end of this month. They have done a much better job on the scheduling front then they did last year. Otherwise, I think early September it will be finalized.

Go Griz!

Update 8/6

Today Northern, Rocky and MSUB all announced their non-conference schedules and neither the Griz nor the cats appear on any of them. Same goes for Tech and Western. That leaves just Carroll and Providence who have yet to announce their schedules. I said in the last update I feel fairly confident that it could be both of them. I'm willing to bet one of them for sure will be on our schedule. My hunch right now is Carroll. I'm starting to have second thoughts now if we will see both of them on the schedule.

One interesting thing to keep an eye on is in an article last week from the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Matt Logie mentioned that they are only going to play 1 non-D1 team this year. The thing I want to point out though is with only 2 in-state teams remaining, the likelihood of either Carroll or Providence scheduling both the Griz and the cats on their schedule is basically zero. So that means, unless the cats schedule an out of state non D1 team, only one of these teams is going to be on our schedule. So now we must keep our eye on out of state non-D1's. Some teams that we've seen in the past include Dickinson State, Warner Pacific, SAGU AIC, and Northwest Indian College. I tend to think it's not gonna be Dickinson because they have North Dakota on their schedule but maybe.

I'll continue to do some hunting around to see what I can find, but for now bank on one of Carroll or Providence (possibly both but unlikely) being on our schedule. I'll let you know if I find anything!

Jesus Christ, it’s about time! Our Summit League matchups are out, and we will host South Dakota State on Wednesday December 4 and we will go to St. Thomas in their brand new arena on Saturday December 7. SDSU was the Summit League regular season and tournament champs, and St. Thomas is coming off their best season of their D1 era with 20+ wins finishing 3rd in the league. This is shaping up to be quite the excellent schedule we’ve put together. Lots of good quality mid major teams on the docket! 5 games to go!

November 24 vs. Denver
November 25 vs. Utah Tech
November 27 vs. Cal State Northridge
December 4 vs. South Dakota State
December 7 @ St. Thomas
December 16 @ Northern Iowa

Update 8/23
This right here will be our toughest non-conference game of the year. We will play at Tennessee on Wednesday November 13. Sandwiched directly in the middle of road games at Oregon and Utah State, all of which won at least 1 game in the NCAA tournament last year. The Vols have had some tremendous success under Rick Barnes including their best season just last year advancing to the Elite 8 before losing to eventual runner-up Purdue. Hopefully this will be a big pay check because similarly to Houston last year, we stand no chance in this one, and it could get ugly in a hurry.

I do also wanna mention one other update. We have a date change for our road game at Northern Iowa. Originally scheduled for December 22, it has now been moved up to Monday December 16.

That leaves 4 games remaining. With the addition of Tennessee, I think that concludes all the money games for this year. I'm still expecting at least 2 non-D1 home games, and I have a slight hunch that it could possibly be 3. The teams that right now I'm keeping the closest eye on are Carroll, Providence, and Northwest Indian College. I'm hoping that we only have 2 non-D1's as I think having 3 is kind of lame but we all know how tough scheduling can be. I also think there's one more road game out there, hopefully against a mid major or Mountain West team as this road schedule is already challenging enough. The only road game that I feel semi good about right now is St. Thomas but even that game I'm a little worried.

We should be pretty close to an announcement of the schedule from the athletic department. With the start of the Football season looming next week, I think there is a chance that we could hear something next week before everything else becomes overshadowed by Football. I'll keep everyone posted if I find anything else.

November 8 @ Oregon
November 13 @ Tennessee
November 18 @ Utah State
November 24 vs. Denver
November 25 vs. Utah Tech
November 27 vs. Cal State Northridge
December 4 vs. South Dakota State
December 7 @ St. Thomas
December 16 @ Northern Iowa

Both SDS and StT have very good Bball clubs. Neither of those games will be easy.

That schedule looks pretty good for now. Probably a few more games to be added.

Weber's schedule isn't as far along yet. Utah State refuses to play us since we beat them on their home floor and snapped a long home winning streak. We hurt their widdo feewings.

I saw that Idaho has put out their full schedule. I think they may be the first in the BSC.

SDSU and St. Thomas will definitely be tough games. They’re probably gonna be the preseason top 2 in the Summit League. I was just saying compared to the rest of our road games, St. Thomas appears to be the easiest of them all. Still gonna be tough though.

And actually, 6/10 Big Sky teams have announced their non conference schedules. The only 4 that haven’t yet are UM, Weber, Sac and UNC. Check out the D1 Docket. They provide a comprehensive list of every team in America and their schedule. I’ll attach a link. You should see the cats schedule. Only 5 home games and they have road games at Wisconsin, TCU, USC, Northwestern, and Wichita State. Now that’s brutal.

Saturday December 21 @ San Francisco via Rocco Miller. That should conclude our road schedule for 24-25. The remaining 3 games I believe will all be home games against non-D1s. I think one of them will be the season opener before we head to Oregon, one will be after the Christmas break in a final tune up before league play, and one I think will be sandwiched in between road games at St. Thomas and UNI.

Another tough road game. The Dons went 23-11 last year, losing in the semis of the WCC tourney to Gonzaga and then losing in the first round of the NIT to Cincinatti in Overtime. There are no gimmes in this non conference road schedule for the Griz. The boys are gonna have to bring it every night.

Also, is Robby Beasley still at USF? 👀

The most recent roster they have posted, both the Beasley brothers still play for USF:

That looks like 13 to me. I think you guys are tapped out
When you play Hawaii, you get an extra game and the two games of a tournament only count as one. However, I do think we are done, besides an exhibition game. Hard road games can be good for getting you ready for BSC road games and give you a little pocket change as well.
