But Rutgers and USC were/are both FBS schools. OSU/WSU will look at other FBS schools, and with the money they have, won't have a problem finding them. They are not going to slum it with FCS schools.

I get your point and don't necessarily disagree ... I don't agree that they would be slumming it but do think that if they believe that money will be the same in the future they are delusional. It's really more about how they need to think about the future, that goes for them and for programs like the Griz that have lots to offer. I understand the challenges, don't have a solution but do know that things are changing and that a progressive approach will be a lot better than living in the past. Griz may stay FCS and if they do they need to look at what changes need to be made, may move up and have to deal with new financial issues, may sit on their hands and see change dictated to them. All in all seems like the Griz have the upward trajectory to leverage their position vs. being told what to do... that may not last.

I don't understand why you think UM is better for the future than stripping the MWC. UM offers little compared to those schools, now or in the future. Griz have zero leverage with OSU/WSU.
It's more like better preparing for the future than they have been in the past. Granted many issues exist and I'm more professing the desire vs. the reality. I'm being selfish in that I'd love to see teams like WSU and OSU vs many that currently play in the MWC. My feeling is what one has to offer today may look much different in the very near future and I guess I really don't view OSU and WSU as prime real estate in the realignment world we live in. The best position may be that a realigned MWC that includes the Griz is the best answer...or a new conference that includes some of the aforementioned options from the FCS. All I do know for sure is that the Griz, Cats, Sac St. Davis et.al have all outgrown NC, PSU and even EWU who seems to be stuck in reverse. I'd probably be happy if the neighbors would just clean up their yards...

You continually want to overlook that UM and the BSC doesn't prepare OSU/WSU for the future at the same level that the top MWC schools would. Of course UM should prepare, but that path is probably the leftovers from the MWC and other top FCS schools that fit within the geography. The path doesn't include playing in a conference with OSU/WSU.
Agreed 100%. I think we fit a lot better with what’s left of the MWC than with OSU/WSU.

Again don't really disagree, got wrapped up in trying to defend wanting a WSU component but would love this, maybe add an Idaho and a Sac. State to the mix. Wouldn't be disappointed if the New Mexico schools felt they belonged elsewhere but for the time being looking forward to that last regular season home game with PSU! Go Griz!
No way. The ship for wazzu and osu joining another P4 has sailed so far it's damn circumnavigated and is coming back to them.
The remainder of your post I largely agree with. Unless those two teams flounder as independents for 3 to 4 years. At that point it may become an economic necessity to join a conference, and hopefully that would be the MWC which was wide to add Montana prior to that occurring

My point was those are the options they are exploring, and UM isn't one of them. And OSU/WSU have scheduling agreements for the next several years and tons of cash for their conference...going independent isn't anywhere near their wheelhouse.
I hated seeing Choach's ugly mug on the side of this article, but this article from Nevada is a great perspective on the financial issues facing OSU and WSU from the Mountain West perspective of a program that may or may not be considered for a rebuild, as well as the time crunch that OSU and WSU are facing with the NCAA. Just because they have a lot of money currently and will be raking in a lot more over the next couple of years, it will take some aggressive action and the promise of the future cash just to get the PAC-12 built.
One major hurdle that could keep Nevada out of a rebuilt Pac-12
