Jackson St,, the attendance leader, get $4.1 million of ticket revenue. Alabama St, 4th in attendance, gets 1.1 million from tickets. Source: Knight.Well to be fair the bison play in a barn that they rent and average 15000 fans a game, and though SDSU averages 18000 for regular season games they only average around 6000 for a playoff game. You know who else outdraws both of those teams on average? Tarleton State, and Alabama State. Half the SWAC makes up half of the top ten on the attendance list. You have to get to the top 25 to get half the big sky and down to #39 on the list to add in Weber. EWU is right in the middle at 67 and the only thing they have going for them is the red turf and though unique to them, it’s impossible to watch a game on for the majority of fans.
To whomever (Everett or Kem) made the point, UNC and PSU rank 102 and 111 in attendance respectively out of 128 teams. There’s clearly a difference between the bottom and top of the conference in facilities and support and a good portion of the the FCS should be D2 or lower still or going forward. The top of FCS is still competitive, but that bottom half is sure getting watered down.
Also, nice to get picked to have a nationally televised network game every year as well just because there’s only a handful of programs, schools, and facilities that the conference wants to show off. Nobody is signing up to put PSU at UNC on an ESPN2 on a Saturday night. They wouldn’t even put such a thing on a Friday night over the high school games they broadcast. And the conference clearly doesn’t want to show a non-competitive blood-letting game either.
