Idaho State Regular Season Predictions

Griz til I die

I got a busy day at work tomorrow, so I’m gonna post this tonight. We’re onto Idaho State. They enter year 2 of the Cody Hawkins era after going 3-8 last season. On paper, that may not look great but if you remember there were many people, myself included, that thought they were gonna go 0-11. They have a very young team and they could play spoiler this year. With that, let’s dive in!

August 31 @ Oregon State - L. Conference realignment has not been kind to the Beavs. Johnathan Smith and much of the staff went to Michigan State, and they’ve gotten crushed in the portal. Could be a long season for OSU, but they’ll win this one. I don’t think ISU has a shot.

September 7 vs. Western Oregon - W. Shout out to the Wolves for playing 2 Big Sky opponents this season (Cal Poly). Should be a great test for them, but I expect ISU to roll at home.

September 14 @ North Dakota - L. ISU heads to Grand Forks 1 week after the Griz. Could be interesting to see what UND looks like coming off the Griz game. That said, I would be very surprised if ISU won this game.

September 21 vs. Southern Utah - W. ISU will play both former Big Sky teams in the non-conference schedule. There’s some “experts” out there that think the T-Birds will win the UAC. I’m not as high on them as a lot of other people are, especially after the NCAA sanctions they received earlier this week. I actually think ISU is gonna win this game. This will be a good measuring stick game for them as they head into league play.

September 28 vs. Montana State - L. The cats first trip to the ICCU Dome (formerly Holt Arena) since 2018 when they lost to ISU. I expect it to be a much different result this time around as the cats will roll in this game.

October 5 @ Cal Poly - W. The Stangs are in an absolute state of disarray and ISU should win this game. I’ll be disappointed if they don’t.

October 12 vs. Portland State - W. ISU surprisingly beat PSU on the road last year, so I see no reason why they can’t win at home this year.

October 19 @ Northern Arizona - L. This is where things start to ramp up. This is probably ISU’s last winnable game to me. NAU is just a complete wild card to me and I’m gonna struggle with their predictions here in a few weeks. This feels like a 50-50 game but I’ll say NAU wins at home.

October 26 vs. Sacramento State - L. Idk why, but this feels like a game ISU could play spoiler in, but I can’t pull myself to pick them. I gotta go with Sac.

November 2 BYE.

November 9 @ Weber State - L. No matter how hard they try, ISU cannot beat Weber to save their lives. Weber could be winless on the year and they’d still win this game. They are ISU’s kryptonite. Weber should win comfortably.

November 16 @ Eastern Washington - L. Another very interesting game. By the time we get to this one, Eastern may have a lot on the line and cannot afford to drop this game at home. Eastern guts out a close one.

November 23 vs. Idaho - L. I don’t think this one will be pretty. Idaho may also have a lot on the line in this game. Vandys win handily.

——————————

I got Idaho State going 4-8. They’re gonna have plenty of opportunities to win games early, but once they get to mid October, their chances will be few and far. I like Cody Hawkins and I think he will eventually build a winner, but sometimes it takes baby steps. That’s my prediction. Thoughts???

I think they will surprise this year, and may win 2-3 of the games you have them as losses, maybe even upsetting a good team or two.

Hawkins impressed me so much as a coach last year. His ability to design that quick hitting offense to give them a chance of moving that ball against consistently superior talent was marvelous. I don't know NEARLY enough about the actual players at ISU, but I am with you both in thinking they will take another step forward. They got a good one.

I completely agree that Hawkins is a great coach and they got lucky with him. I'm just not sure how well he can ultimately do there. If he can turn it around enough to get some notice somewhere else he might be on an upward trajectory. My fear is that ISU is a career killer.

I think he can make them competitive, but it'd be hard to turn them into perennial title contenders with all the disadvantages they have in lack of resources and funds. Time will tell. Hawkins is great though and I'm excited to see what they do this year since they're not on our schedule.

Look at the list of coaches, particularly in recent years, who have come in with proven track records, and have done a face plant. Mike Kramer is at the top of that list. Hell of a coach( success at EWU and MooU), great quotes, entertaining as hell. It's Pocatello. Hell, it's all of east and southeast Idaho. Snake bit. 43 years since it's lone NC. Think what 43 years of, for the most part, sucky football would do to UM/Griz. The of those 19,000 season ticket holders, how many would have died of old age waiting, and bitching til they wheeled them off at room temp. Donors? 🤣 Then, to top it off, they still play in that tater shed.

Hawkins is a great coach. He'll need a third year to finally get his recruits in place. Just be glad he's not coaching EWU, Weber, or MSU

He is and has had a great mentor in resource as a father. Now that he’s not a full time head coach for an opposing team, wonder if Hawk will be a surrogate analyst for him this year.

I just have to ask: Based on what, other than your intuition?

He followed his father to Boise (never actually WENT there), followed him to Colorado, to the IFAF Cup, and to UC Davis. Idaho State is the first job he's gotten really on his own. He had a couple nice offensive weapons at Davis (Hastings & Skattebo). They went 8-4 and 6-5 his two years as OC. He went 3-8 last year with ISU. He'll probably go 4-8 this year.

Just trying to figure out where all the "love" is coming from, other than "he's not Bobby".

It's his opinion which we are all supposed to bow down to simply because he says so. He will not provide any facts or reasoning for why he believes so.

Hawkins seems like a great guy for sure and he had quite the prolific offense last year but it remains to be seen what he can do long-term at ISU. No one else has been able to succeed there.

379 yards and 25 points a game? That's prolific?

Their rushing offense finished dead last in the conference at just 59 yards a game so they were horribly one-dimensional (interestingly, almost 100 passing attempts ahead of the next team).

Guess I just don't see it. Be happy to admit I'm wrong if they suddenly go 7-5 or 8-4, but I wouldn't put any money on that happening.

Well there I go throwing out an opinion without any facts. Hahaha. I guess I meant that they were great at throwing it all over the field but I obviously didn't realize that their run game was so bad.

I agree that Hawkins hasn't proven anything yet but of course third likes him. He hates the guy who's a proven success and gets behind the guy who has done nothing. Makes perfect sense in his world I guess.

And yet with players, they have to prove it before they can be mentioned.

I sincerely doubt they have a winning record. The reason I give him the praise that I do is based entirely around him cresting such a quick hitting pass game that it was installed and giving teams fits so quickly. If he had actual talent, it may have been a damn fine offense.
