Top 25 Returning FCS WR’s

Damn, that’s impressive.

I also remember when we were really hoping Chism might be tempted to transfer from EWU a few years ago. Didn’t expect to see him so high on this list.

"1. Junior Bergen, Montana

Bergen is the most impactful non-quarterback for an FCS team, owning the ability to flip a game or make a splash play at any moment with the ball in his hands.

He’s maybe more well-known by casual FCS fans for his special teams returns, where he has six career punt/kick return touchdowns, including three in a legendary 2023 playoff run. But Bergen is also an electric wide receiver in a Montana offense that spreads the ball around to several running backs and pass-catchers.

Last year as an All-Big Sky First Team selection at WR and punt returner, Bergen recorded 59 catches for 791 yards and five TDs, 434 kick return yards (28.9 yards per return) with a touchdown, and 429 punt return yards (15.3 avg.) and three scores. He’s one of the more electrifying, if not the most electrifying player in the FCS."

Having two WRs on that list, with Junior being #1 is pretty special. Fontes is no slouch either. If someone compiled a list of the top wide receiver combos in the country, the Griz would be #1 for sure. (Then add Grossman into that mix. 😍) If Pawlak can improve the o-line and the QBs can step up, the offense could be quite a bit better this year. The defense and special teams should be just as good. There's a lot to be excited about! (Unless you are one of the resident Eeyores who complain about everything.)

Well, whatever happens or doesn't happen, it'll be all Bobby's fault.🤔

J.B. is the reason we were in the national championship game. The other guy? Forgot his name but he is playing somewhere next season ? Not so much. His ranking is a generous 23 ? Think that's it but frankly not worth the effort to check.

JB may be “the reason”, but without the other guy on the roster, we’d have been sitting home for the playoffs, so JB’s magical playoff performance would have never happened.

It’s not a zero-sum game. You can pump up and celebrate JB without feeling the need to denigrate another player who was just as instrumental in our performance last season.

Try it. It’s very freeing.

We would not have been the #2 seed, Big Sky Champs, and potentially Brawl champs without Clifton McDowell, and we wouldn't have made the NC without Junior Bergen. Both of these things can be true. Both were hugely instrumental in the success of the entire season last year. You guys don't need to still be weird about only one of them because you suddenly don't like him.

Obviously I agree with Junior being the #1 returning reviver in the FCS and Keelan White also being on that list. I just hope we can get him the ball more than 4 times a game. He and White only averages a little less than 4 catches per game. And we all know the reason why.
But our receiver trio this year is one of the best in recent years and if Grossman can return to his old form that would be another huge plus. But also having Shafer at TE is a plus too. He was always sure handed and his only downfall was holding. Eli is a good RB, but I'm hopeful we will see Coach Pease throw the ball way more this year especially with Xavier Harris stepping into the slot position, our staring 4 receiver set will be the most dangerous in the big sky and maybe even the country. And if we get our o line straightened out starting with the center then our offense will be unstoppable. I have no doubt whoever starts at QB will get the job done with all the weapons we have. In a perfect situation we should be throwing the ball 70% and running 30%. Go GRIZ!!!

With the stable of RB's we now have (Gillman, Ostmo, Rocker, et al), I wouldn't expect Pease to change much up...not sure if we have a "runner" like McDowell on the squad, so that might change things up slightly, but with Grossman back there's even MORE people to spread the ball around to. Not sure how you get Bergen the ball more...it's an embarrassment of riches, for sure.

If we land that guy from Central Michigan for the O-line, I REALLY like the depth there...and the D is absolutely loaded.

Really the only "unknown" right now is who steps up in fall camp to run the ship.

I just struggle to see a Hauck team ever throwing close to 70% of time, but Bobby did say recently that they actually called a lot more pass plays than fans realize. I knew we ran a lot of RPO, but I didn't that they were giving Clif a passing option on the majority of plays, based on his reads, and he was keeping it more on the ground. It made me wonder if Pease has convinced Hauck to open things up just a little more than he used to.

As you probably know, Bobby has said there are times a team needs to throw to set up the run.
