The portal didn't exist then. It's completely changed the recruiting game.JJ and Selle were good. Not a fan of the statuesque Gustafson. But how many years ago did JJ and Selle play? It was a looooong time ago

100%. So, if Boise can get him fully knowing he'll likely be gone if he kills it, I feel like we should be able to do similar things at the relative talent level. I don't think the staff would go for that approach. I think I remember BH lamenting the portal at the beginning saying something like it will just make us a farm system (paraphrasing). So, the next best approach might be bringing in experienced transfers.Smart move on his part. He can play much sooner, and if he's really as good as advertised, sign a big contract to close out the college career at a major program.
Plus all the really GOOD recent starters Adams (EWU), Gubrud (EWU), Thomson (Sac), Martinez (NAU), Barron (Weber), McCoy (Idaho) have left their programs for greener pastures, requiring them to scramble to find replacements. It's a conundrum for sure. Please provide written proof that in the '90s and 2000s, the Griz routinely had a solid starter and a very good backup because I don't think the case can be made.
Were there periods of time where we had a solid starter and a decent backup? Sure, but I would contend that the Griz did not consistently have a solid starter and a very good backup during the 20-year period to which you are referring. Having Dickenson and Ah Yat at the same time was an anomaly that has yet to be repeated and is extremely unlikely in the current era of the portal.
One could make the argument that other teams have routinely found and developed better QB's than the Griz, but that's not the argument you're making.
Good point.Plus all the really GOOD recent starters Adams (EWU), Gubrud (EWU), Thomson (Sac), Martinez (NAU), Barron (Weber), McCoy (Idaho) have left their programs for greener pastures, requiring them to scramble to find replacements. It's a conundrum for sure.
I'm a two degree UM grad. Define 'crazy loyalty' and give us examples....instilling crazy loyalty to UM).
Yeah, I'm a grad and have season tickets despite not living anywhere near Missoula. That could be an example, but not on point in the player context.I'm a two degree UM grad. Define 'crazy loyalty' and give us examples.
Not true, there were plenty of very good returning starters from playoff teams this last year...Plus all the really GOOD recent starters Adams (EWU), Gubrud (EWU), Thomson (Sac), Martinez (NAU), Barron (Weber), McCoy (Idaho) have left their programs for greener pastures, requiring them to scramble to find replacements. He only mentioned Big Sky teams so maybe that was his frame of reference. One wouldn't think that comparing UM to other Big Sky teams would be a stretch. Not true, there were plenty of very good returning starters from playoff teams this last year...
Sdsu, ndsu, u of south dakota, and u of north dakota all had multi year returning starters, only u.n.d. lost their starting q.b. from last year, and that's because he ran out of eligibility and grad transferred to Michigan state..
Thank you, Mom. I thought that was obvious, but apparently not.He only mentioned Big Sky teams so maybe that was his frame of reference. One wouldn't think that comparing UM to other Big Sky teams would be a stretch.
Fine. I will start procreating right up on Mount Sentinel.100%. Simply put: In this era, if we ever have a four-year starter at QB, we're likely doing it wrong (unless the kid is a four star born atop Mount Sentinel and held Simba-Style overlooking the stadium, thus instilling crazy loyalty to UM).
Now, he, and his co-procreator, are true fans. I take it the 'Simba moment' will be about March 1.Fine. I will start procreating right up on Mount Sentinel.
I replied to what he ACTUALLY posted...even if he meant what you think sacrament state and montana state are returning starting Q.B.'s from last season...He only mentioned Big Sky teams so maybe that was his frame of reference. One wouldn't think that comparing UM to other Big Sky teams would be a stretch.
I missed nothing. I asked for a definition and examples. I only got examples. Still waiting for the definition of 'crazy loyalty'(your term, not mine).Yeah, I'm a grad and have season tickets despite not living anywhere near Missoula. That could be an example, but not on point in the player context.
Example 1: If a HS senior has offers from USC, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, and Montana, and he chooses Montana.
Example 2: If a starting QB at UM has offers to transfer to USC, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, and chooses to stay at Montana.
Is that good enough to meet your standards of explaining one clause you picked out of a longer post with an overarching point that you've apparently missed?
Sacrament St?!?I replied to what he ACTUALLY posted...even if he meant what you think sacrament state and montana state are returning starting Q.B.'s from last season..
Ok, cool. Definition: The kind of loyalty to UM that would cause someone to stay at UM even if he has offers to transfer to major programs that would give him more exposure, money, and an opportunity to prove himself against better competition.I missed nothing. That's a very good point. And before that, Prukop of Cats. I didn't know this: "Prukop did a whirlwind trip, including two and a half days visiting the Ducks, followed by a red-eye flight to Alabama to visit with coach Nick Saban. Prukop was also being pursued by Michigan recently, but chose the Tuscaloosa trip over an Ann Arbor visit. He also considered Texas." Who knew that Herbert was going to arrive at Oregon at the same time.Plus all the really GOOD recent starters Adams (EWU), Gubrud (EWU), Thomson (Sac), Martinez (NAU), Barron (Weber), McCoy (Idaho) have left their programs for greener pastures, requiring them to scramble to find replacements. I grew up loving the Montana Grizzlies with all my heart. If I had been a good enough player that I got an offer to play at Montana, then started at U of M, and then 20 year old Sophomore Elrod had been offered mid six figures to leave, I would have given everyone a very warm hug goodbye.Ok, cool. Definition: The kind of loyalty to UM that would cause someone to stay at UM even if he has offers to transfer to major programs that would give him more exposure, money, and an opportunity to prove himself against better competition.
I think you might be getting caught up with the term “crazy”. Replace it with “deep” or whatever adjective you need to understand my point that a starting QB who is good enough to start early and kill it here would have to possess uncommon loyalty to UM to stick around in the portal era.
AY is going to be a multiple year starter with a crazy good winning percentage. Eventual 1st Team All BSC selection and strong potential to be a national champion QB.
The only thing that can derail is if his potential leads him to elevate in the portal.
