Good article on treating college athletes as employees

Seems like a dumb idea to me. The Dartmouth basketball team votes on this next week. I've talked to Cam Krystkoviak about this a bit, as he was a captain last year at Dartmouth. He said injury healthcare/insurance was one of the main issues. I don't have an issue with making sure that athletic injuries get fully taken care of.

Some Brown athletes have previously sued for athletic scholarships. I don't know anything about that case. That one seems dumb to me too.

I've been told that 3 of the current Dartmouth players receive no financial aid (their families have money). I only mention this, and am not making a point.

Who is going to be the first group of athletes to apply it then be shocked when they are not given a scholarship and instead receive a tuition discount? Only realizing after the fact that they will have to use some of their pay back to the university to go to school. Also realizing that they will have to pay some for health insurance, and retirement if they choose. Seems like it would be hard for a university to employ these athletes and not treat them the same as any other university employee. Also seems like another mess and another series of lawsuits.

A little insight from employment bubble re: bolded above - I think it would depend on what the university offers. For me (a current university employee), I don't pay a dime for my health insurance coverage - bu I am required to have x amount taken from my paycheck for retirement. Not familiar with Dartmouths policy(ies) - but I wouldn't be surprised either way (if they (players) end up having to pay some for insurance or not pay anything).

13-2 vote today to unionize.
