ZAGS Lost

Snapped a 50 game winning streak last night, Santa Clara is clearly a better team.

The first half Gonzaga was horrible. They played a pretty soldi second half to get back in the game, Raivio was out of his mind for a 10 minute stretch. The Zig Zags were no match for the size and experience of Santa Clara. They have 4 5th year seniors and it shows.

Pariseau the transfer from EWU knocked down a couple of big shots. Could we actually have a tourney w/o Duke & Gonzaga? How awesome would that be!!!

The Zags have three tough games left. A home game at the Spokane Arena against Memphis and road games at USF and USD. The Zags have 9 losses. If they don't win the WCC tourney, they won't be in the NCAA tourney.

I predict Heytfelt will not be back this year.

Santa Clara played great. They shot extremely well from the line and 3-point line.
I guess you could say we got "baylarked."

I respectfully disagree. All though they do need to win a couple more, I don't think the have to win the WCC tourney. They have some very big wins to their credit this year...North Carlonina, Washington, Texas, Stanford. Granted that was before recent shake-ups, but I still think they could get in without winning their conference tourney. I've been known to be wrong before though.

Danny Periseau looked great last night. I'm glad that he is having success. He was part of the exodus from eastern that also included Matt Nelson and Eric Henkel. It's good to see some former BSC players tearing up their respective leagues. Also it confirms that EWU's coach is a jerk.

I felt at the beginning of the year that GU's hopes depended upon
Josh's progression. Unlike previous yrs they have no one else in the
middle;however I would't give up on them yet-they will adjust.

Good prediction since I am all but certain NCAA rules require a 1 year suspension for a drug related offense.

I thought Josh played a little soft for someone that was suppose to be one of the best big men in the nation. They need someone to step up in the middle. They cannot rely on Raivio (sp) to do it for them. I'm still rooting for them.

the local angle: remember, we beat these same broncos last year on their home court by 11. not only were several members of that team involved in last night's game--henke, bryant, brody--but their best player against us, travis niesen, graduated. new to the broncos this year are pariseu, dougherty, dennison and that other seven-footer, so they really re-loaded.

subplot: thanks to gonzaga's success, other schools in the wcac now harbor dreams of grandeur, such that a solid veteran coach like dick davey has been pushed out for the prospect of a higher profile guy like mike montgomery or steve lavin. davey has put together a solid veteran bunch with size up front and quickness and fearlessness at the guard slots, and i'm rooting for him to take this team a long way, then sign on with a higher-profile school.

City,

I have heard that Montgomerey is their choice, and that Mike would groom his son John for the job when he hangs it up.

An article that I read after Davey announced he was leaving sure made it sound like he was just ready to call it a career. He had nothing but good things to say about Santa Clara, sounds like he has been at the school forever.

Hey, where are all those folks who crowed about how great Gonzaga is earlier this year???

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Not to be a jerk and all but it did crack me up...I'm tired of all this Gonzaga hooplah-

It's ok to hate Gonzaga, this isn't the Gonzaga board.

you're probably right about montgomery, gb1. i think he likes the bay area, and bringing your son along, as bobby knight and dick bennett have done, seems to be in vogue now among the high-profile coaches.

montgomery, meanwhile, could carve out a comfortable niche for himself as a tv analyst. i've heard him do a couple of stanford games, and the guy just oozes basketball knowledge. where the average fan might see one thing happening in any given situation, monty sees four or five things. he just can't shut up during a telecast, and yet you don't for a second regret a second of it because it's all so insightful.

still, i do not have fond memories of monty at montana. no ncaa appearances, too many cupcakes, too many excuses ("you can't recruit black kids to montana")--all of which stew morrill reversed almost immediately once he took over. to watch monty coach the big sky championship game against the cats at reno was pure agony. the best player maybe ever in the big sky conference in krysko, and we let a--what, fourth seed?--beat us for the championship. terrible coaching job, combined with a failure to recruit a supporting cast for krysko. a year or two before that i remember asking during a brief conversation with him if he had other offers and he joked, "you got one?" i don't think monty's heart was ever in montana.
