Montana defensive end Zack Wagenmann was named the Defensive Player of the Week by the Big Sky Conference, the league office announced Monday.
Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week and Montana State returner Gunnar Brekke was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Wagenmann, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound senior from Missoula, registered eight tackles – three for loss – with two sacks, two quarterback hurries, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup in Montana’s 18-15 win over North Dakota.
The Buck Buchanan Award candidate got the Grizzlies on the board when he sacked the North Dakota QB in the end zone after a bad snap. In the second quarter, he sacked the UND quarterback, causing a fumble that he recovered at the North Dakota 6-yard line. Wagenmann led a Montana defense that kept North Dakota scoreless until 6:37 remained in the game. UM allowed 45 rush yards and 241 yards of total offense.
Wagenmann leads the Big Sky and ranks third in the nation with nine sacks. This is Wagenmann’s second Player of the Week honor this season and the third of his career.
Prukop, a 6-2, 200-pound sophomore from Austin, Texas, accounted for eight touchdowns and amassed 488 yards of total offense to lead the Bobcats to a thrilling 59-56 last-second victory over Sacramento State. Prokup completed 23 of 34 passes for a career-high 348 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes. His final TD pass to Mitchell Herbert came with four seconds remaining and proved to be the game-winner. Prukop also rushed 16 times for 140 yards with three touchdowns. His TD runs came from 30, 49 and 10 yards. Prukop became the second QB in school history to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game. This is Prukop’s second career Player of the Week honor.
Brekke, a 5-11, 195-pound sophomore from Helena, tallied 244 kick return yards and set up the game-winning score in Montana State’s 59-56 win over Sacramento State. Brekke broke off a 70-yard return with one minute to play to put the Bobcats in scoring position. Earlier in the game, he had a 75-yard kick return to set up an MSU field goal. Brekke became the third player in MSU history to amass 300 all-purpose yards in a game. Brekke had two catches for 59 yards and a touchdown and two rushes for 6 yards. His 308 all-purpose yards were the second-most in school history.
