The Lady Griz played reasonably well, and EWU has some potential. While EWU shot just under 30%, the LG shot only about 35%. EWU was terrible from 3-pt. range. The LG outrebounded EWU badly, and got to the line alot more (19 fouls to 29).
The LG were going to win this game, one way or another. However, EWU is scrappy, aggressive and apparently started 3 frosh. EWU is big and strong, which hurt the LG at times. I don't know who EWU graduates, but they might be tough next year.
EWU doubled-teamed after defensive rebounds, double-teamed and trapped at other times, hand-checked and pushed the LG at times (but not enough to call fouls). Team turnovers and assists were about the same. I don't know how EWU is shooting for the season, and the LG played good defense most of the time, but EWU will need to make some more if their good looks in the future if they want to compete.
Mandy was Mandy. Sonja didn't get alot of outside looks, but had a fine game. She had a defensive moment (for 15 seconds after a switch) when she defended the post on the inside so well that EWU was not able to get the ball to the post. It was a magnificent display of hustle/desire defense. Very impressive.
Lohman had another very good game, doing many good things in all of aspects of the game (13 rebounds). She really knows how to play the game of basketball, and is a complete player. Ena was tough as she always is (10 rebounds). She is going to be one of the all-time Griz greats. If she would 2 or 3 inches taller, she'd eventually be in the WNBA. Beck had a fine game.
Guardipee was tough off the bench, especially in the first half. Nance-Johnson was a nice game, and was especially tough right when UWU cut the lead to 8 midway thru the second half. Hit 5 of 6 freethrows and made other nice plays in that stretch. Linford was solid off the bench, and Stender didn't play as much as usual.
There was a period of time in the second half when the refs sucked, with all 3 of them making bad calls, time after time. I usually think some (not all) of the female refs are not up to par in the Big Sky, and the 2 female refs made or missed some terrrible calls, but the guy, Dan Miller, was just terrible for a period of the second half. Of course, he was bad when he was "officiating" city league games, so why should we think he'd be any better now.
Congrats to the Lady Griz. Let's get PSU.
Another nice performance by the cheer squad and dancers. Let's hope none of them are seniors.
A great new event at halftime. I was skeptical, but it was terrific. A toddler crawl race on a mat. About 9-14 months. There were 3 of them. It couldn't have been better if scripted. The 9 month got off to a big jump and went right to, but not over, the finish line. Another moved in fits and starts. The 14 month old wouldn't leave mom. Then, the one in the middle moved close to the finish line and stopped short. Finally, the 14 month old kicked in gear and caught up, but stopped short. Eventually, the 14 month old got over the finish line.
